WHAT YOU WILL LEARN:

We are hopefully all aware of the ground-breaking tests that NIST and UL have been conducting on Modern Fire Behavior over the last few years. An incredi-ble amount of information has come out of the tests, but what does that mean on the fireground? Chief Healy has been one of the people at the forefront of this research, and has overseen the policy, strategy, and tactics changes for the FDNY. He will be here to teach us how to apply the new info on our modern fireground based on his per-sonal experiences and those of other departments that have been involved. After this class, you will be armed with the knowledge of how to implement changes in your own department based on new scientific facts rather than a couple hundred years of “tradition”. The presentation will focus on using the new science in fireground decision-making, controlling ventilation flow paths, application of hose streams from outside the structure, and other changes that have come from the studies. This should be a “DON’T MISS” class for your department policy-makers!!!

Thursday: Applying Modern Firefighting Tactics

ABOUT THE SPEAKER: Deputy Chief George K. Healy is a 23

year veteran of the FDNY presently assigned to Division 11

Brooklyn NY. He served as the Operations section chief for both

of the Governor’s Island burns, testing alternate strategies for

combating wind driven fires in 2008 and conducting ventilation

and suppression exercises in 2012. He serves on the Technical

Review Panel for Underwriters Laboratory’s Assistance to Fire-

fighters grant program studying horizontal ventilation and vertical

ventilation. He has been a lecturer at many conferences, including

the FDNY High Rise Symposium, Chicago High Rise Symposium,

UK Fire College Symposium, West Midlands UK seminar, FDIC, and multiple other nation-

al and international conferences. He is a Fire Service Instructor I, Nassau Fire Academy

Instructor, Illinois Institute Instructor, Instructor for the Battalion Chief Command Course

and Deputy Chief Development Course and Chiefs Education day for the FDNY.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN: This presentation involves a careful examination of firefighter sui-cides within the fire service. Emphasis is placed on the educational role FBHA plays nationally through the use of data and statistics collected by FBHA. Presentation will consist of understand-ing emotional and physical stressors, signs & symptoms, suicide events, communication skills, re-sources both internal and external and group discussion. Retirement issues will finish the workshop. The recommendations for firefighters and fire depart-ments on how to become proactive for those members approaching retirement.

emergency medical services education and professional experience in all-risk public safety career fields, including: Air Medical, SWAT and special technical rescue. He has a Doctorate degree in Education from the University of Houston. He has a pas-sionate teaching style that allows the delivery of important points and objectives to a variety of learning styles while establishing and maintaining an open two-way teaching relationship with the students. He is a lifelong learner committed to lifelong teaching and mentoring. He uses enthusiastic and dynamic teaching as a means of creating and nurturing a lifelong passion for EMS.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN: This presentation will consist of 3 one-hour programs:

Creating People Skills: A Generational Look: This lecture centers on how we can be more effective in using our people skills in all social settings – both professionally and personally. It is critical to better understand ourselves and some of the keys we must pursue to unlock the greatness we have inside ourselves. People skills may seem common sense, but common sense just isn’t so common anymore.

Emotional & Social Intelligence - Hillbilly Heaven: This lecture revolves around what the current research has to say about emotional and social intelligence – the keys to human inter-action. This is a must lecture for anyone that has to deal with others in a cooperative and col-laborative environment and want to truly be more effective in our day-to-day communications. People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.

Building The Leader Inside of You: This lecture is one that is built on providing partici-pants with a research based and practical look at leadership. Together, we will explore how leaders face personal and professional trials and tribulations and find the courage to rise above the challenge and chart a winning course. Leaders do not inflict pain – they bear it.
