Earlier this year our very talented music teacher, Mrs Linda Arnold, was a nominee in the ARIA Music
Teacher of the Year Awards. The four finalists have just been announced and, unfortunately, Mrs Arnold
wasn’t among them. This doesn’t, however, diminish the amazing outcomes in music education that
Mrs Arnold is able to achieve. (The Open Night performances are case in point.) I would like to take this
opportunity to congratulate Mrs Arnold on her achievement and thank her for the positive impact she is
making on our students’ lives.
The great work being carried out by Mrs Arnold may lead to the question, “Is music education
important and, if so, why?”
Nearly everyone enjoys music, whether by listening to it, singing, or playing an instrument. But despite
this almost universal interest, many schools are doing away with their music education programs to
focus on subjects like Science and Maths. This is a mistake, with schools losing not only an enjoyable
subject, but a subject that can enrich students’ lives and education.
Students who have music education develop the areas of the brain related to language and reasoning.
The left side of the brain is better developed with music, and songs can help imprint information on
young minds. When performing with sheet music, student musicians are constantly using their memory
to perform. The skill of memorisation then serves students well in education and beyond.
Students who practice with musical instruments also improve their hand-eye coordination. Just like
playing sports, children develop motor skills, both fine and gross, when playing music. While learning to
play pieces of music on an instrument can be challenging, it is an achievable goal. Students who master
even the smallest goal in music will be able to feel proud of their achievement and this self-efficacy
builds confidence to challenge themselves in other learning situations. An enjoyable subject like music
can also keep students interested and engaged in school. Student musicians are likely to stay in school
to achieve in other subjects.
From the Principal
Music education also helps children to develop their maths and pattern-recognition skills. Students who practice music tend
to have better auditory attention, and pick out predictable patterns from surrounding noise. Introducing music in the early
childhood years can help foster a positive attitude towards learning and curiosity. Artistic education develops the whole
brain and develops a child’s imagination. Music can also be very relaxing. Students address stress by learning to play music
and soothing music is especially helpful in helping kids unwind.
Learning a musical instrument can help children to develop self-discipline. Students learn to set time aside to practice and
rise to the challenge of learning with discipline to master playing their instrument. While performing a musical piece can
bring fear and anxiety, doing so teaches children how to take risks and deal with fear, which will help them become
successful and reach their potential.
Many musical education programs require teamwork as part of a performance group. In these groups, students learn how to
work together and build camaraderie. With encouragement from teachers and parents, students playing a musical
instrument can build pride and confidence.
Our school is fortunate to have a program that benefits our students in so many ways.

Waste Free Education Day
Waste Free Education Day happens next Tuesday 29th October. Every year level will participate in age-appropriate activities around sustainability and waste reduction. It’s a great way for our students to see the benefits of making small changes here at school and at home and how our behaviour impacts our environment. We’re still on the lookout for parent involvement – come down and join us for the fun! Contact Meg Klaver at the front office for more information or to volunteer your time. [email protected]
Walk to School
North Cottesloe is considering the re-invigoration of a walking school bus for students. Taking part in this means that our students can get to school safely with the assistance of 2 of our parents and enjoy the sunshine as we move into more pleasant weather. It also promotes walking to school, getting healthy and making new friendships. We’ll be looking for parent volunteers to commandeer a walking bus so if you’ve got a bit of time and enjoy a morning walk, please reach out to Meg Klaver at the school via email or phone. To help get us underway, a walk to school morning tea is being scheduled for later this term – watch this space!

LOUD SHIRT DAY is a fundraising campaign to raise awareness of hearing loss in children. Donations go towards Telethon Speech & Hearing’s play-based early support classes, where children receive help to hear, speak and learn. At North Cott we will hold Loud Shirt Day on Wednesday 30th October (Term 4, Week 3). Students and staff are invited to wear bright, crazy clothes, spray their hair a bright colour and bring a gold coin donation. We will hold a brief assembly in the morning, fea-turing Loud Shirt Day 2019 Ambassadors, Flynn and Angus Simpson, from our Kindy EC3 class. During the day, the Kids Who Care will collect donations from each classroom. Our goal is to raise more than $550, which will provide five speech therapy sessions for a child needing intensive assis-tance at Telethon Speech & Hearing in Wembley. Let’s get LOUD and PROUD to help give the gift of sound and speech to deaf children! Thank you from the Kids Who Care
Chess club supports problem solving
development and improving spatial
concepts. Here at NCPS we have chess
club every Thursday at lunchtime.
Monday 14th October our staff joined Cottesloe Primary staff for a great professional learning day about developing 'additive thinking'. Additive thinking is evident when our students have a strong 'number sense' and can work with numbers as mental objects. Additive thinkers can partition numbers, rearrange and regroup parts of numbers, think flexibly to add and subtract whole numbers, decimals and fractions.
The building blocks of additive thinking have been the focus of the Pre Primary maths program in weeks 1 & 2. Students have been thinking about ways they can break apart small numbers like 5 and 6. Additive thinkers can use number sense to
solve problems!
Open Night
Thank you to all the parents and visitors who attended Open Night, it was a wonderful event to showcase the students
work. A big thank you to the teachers and students who made the evening a success.
Kiss n’ Drop Facility – Public Consultation (IMPORTANT!)
We need your opinion!! Following Monday’s information session from the Cottesloe Council on the North Cottesloe Primary School Kiss and Drop Pro-ject, I would like to alert you to further information about the proposal on the Council’s website at https://www.cottesloe.wa.gov.au/consultations/consultation/north-cottesloe-primary-school-kiss-and-drop-project
The website also includes the following link to the community survey regarding the concept design, https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/NthCottKissandDrop
I would strongly encourage all school community members to take the time to express their opinions about the proposal.
Feedback from as many people as possible is vital in establishing what the community wants and will greatly assist the School and the Town in its decision-making.
P&C Voluntary Contribution Help make our school great!!
There are still a significant number of people who have not paid their $150 for Voluntary P&C Contributions this year.
A decision was made in 2013 to request this amount and reduce the burden on Fundraising. This amount has not been in-creased since. Most other schools in the area are now requesting amounts significantly higher than this.
We really need the support of everyone if the P&C is going to continue to add real value to the school. The P&C have actively focused this year on achieving improvements to the Undercover Area with new windows, a new
projector, new flexible staging & stage curtain, a new sound system, new carpets and improved storage facilities. I am sure you will all agree it looks amazing and is all being well utilized.
We have also improved some play area in the Wansea facility, bought new Shade Marquees to protect the kids, and acquired new table tennis tables that are proving to be an absolute hit.
We have also been actively pursuing improvements to our Nature play areas and loose parts as our number 1 priority going forward.
However, this will not be possible unless we ALL chip in and support the school. If you have not yet paid this contribution, I ask that you please consider doing so.
Key Dates – Fundraising / Social Calendar 2019 Please put these in your Calendar now!!

The next meeting will be in the school library from 7.30pm to 9pm on Monday the 28th of October 2019. The final meeting for the year will be on Monday 25th November 2019 (at the same time).
We look forward to seeing many parents at P&C meetings. It is a great opportunity to find out more about our school and to raise issues of concern.

CANTEEN NEWS
The canteen continues to be well utilised by many of our children for both recess and lunch. To make the canteen
profitable, we have decided to go back to making all our meals in-house (apart from items provided by WoknRoll). This has
certainly increased the workload for Paula and all the volunteers, however the feedback about the quality of the food
being produced has been very positive. Please prioritise your commitments to the canteen; we can't make it happen
without you. If there is an occasion when you have signed up but need to cancel, please arrange for someone to take your
shift. This can be someone from your class, but doesn't have to be, it can be a friend, parent, parent-in-law, nanny,
neighbour etc.
Please refer to the Classroom Roster for Term 4, 2019. Please go to Sign Up (via Flexibuzz) to volunteer. As the canteen is
making most of the lunches in house, we have extended the second shift by half an hour so the volunteer is now required
from 12.00pm until 1.30pm. If you have any queries regarding the canteen, please don't hesitate to contact me -
