MESICK The self-proclaimed Mushroom Capital of the United States will be celebrating its 56th year of fungi fun with a mud bog, car show, craft show, carnival and plenty of morel mushroom picking.

The annual festival, which has been a tradition since 1959, will be held Mothers Day weekend. From May 8 to 10, thousands of guests will celebrate Mesicks mush-room history with more than a dozen activities. The an-nual event will kick off with a Black Morels mushroom contest. Over the years, the festival has added more ac-tivities and events.

Dave Hendler has organized the car show for the past

six years. The car show and cruise rides through Mesick, Yuma, Marilla Township and returns to Mesick. On May 10, from 9 until noon, dozens of cars will be lined up near Ellens Corners.

We have everything from antiques and classics, to newer model cars in the show each year, Hendler said.

Dorie Kastl, arts and crafts coordinator, said the mud bog, parade and arts and crafts are always must-see ac-tivities every year. The mud flies Saturday May 9 at 1:30 p.m. Admission to the event is $8 per person. Admission is $2 for children ages 5-10.

Joe Bennett, organizer of the festivals mud bog, said nearly 50 entries are expected to participate in the mud bog this year. Bennett said riders from all around North-ern Michigan convene in Mesick for the mud bog each year. Bennett said he challenges any truck drivers to take their chances in the mud.

I think people enjoy the challenge of trying to build a truck that can ride through the mud, Bennett said. Its something thats in your blood.

Bennett said the mud bog is a great opportunity to en-joy a family-friendly event.

Kastl said she has many fun memories participating in family events such as the parade.

I used to run John Deere tractors in the parade with my son and my father, Kastl said. It was special just be-ing with three generations of family and having a good time.

Last year, she said the Super Kicker rodeo was a popu-lar event among spectators. Event organizers are plan-ning to bring the rodeo back for another year this May, she said.

There is always something for everyone at the mush-room festival, Kastl said. After a long winter, the mush-room festival is one of the first chances for people to re-ally enjoy the outdoors.

Mushroom picker kits are $6. The annual event is host-ed by the Mesick Lions Club.

You can hit the trail, literally, on the miles of paths and byways crisscrossing northern lower Michigan.

Wexford County The North Country Trail passes through Lake County and Wexford County on its way up to Fife Lake in Kalkaska County as it stretches from upstate New York to North Dakota. A good place to hop on the trail is the Old U.S. 131 State Forest Campground approximately 17 miles north of Cadillac. Youll need a Recreation Passport if youre visiting state parks and trails. Check out www.northcountrytrail.org.

Closer to Cadillac is the Cadillac Pathway, where you may amble down a number of loop trails through state land. From Mitchell Street in Cadillac, head north to Boon Road (East 34 Road) and turn east. The road will end in a T, where you turn left. Just a few yards away you will find a trailhead and parking lot on the right.

osCeola County The White Pine Trail connects Cadillac to Reed City and allows travel all the way south to Grand Rapids. Hop on the trail at 174 N. Chestnut St.

in Reed City, at 176 Gilbert St. in LeRoy, or at 7184 E. 44 Road in Cadillac. www.whitepinetrail.com. The White Pine Trail intersects with the Pere Marquette Trail in Reed City. The two trails cross at 200 N. Chestnut St., where youll find the Reed City Depot, home of the Reed City Area Chamber of Commerce and a good place to use the restroom or pick up more information about the area. www.reedcity.org.

Missaukee County The cross-country skiing trails of Missaukee Mountain ski area do double-duty as hik-ing trails in the warmer months. The ski area is 3 1/2 miles north of Lake City on M-66. Nearby is the N.E.W. Missaukee Fitness Trail and Native Gardens. The non-motorized trail is handicap accessible and has 10 in-terpretive stations that point out a variety of northern Michigan native plants. CadillaCMemorial Day in Cadillac this year will focus particu-

larly on the Vietnam War.The observances will follow their traditional pattern,

with the Cadillac Area Honor Guard performing a salute to sailors at 9:30 a.m. on Lake Cadillac at the City Dock near the Cadillac Rotary Performing Arts Pavilion.

The parade down Cadillacs main street, Mitchell Street, follows at 10 a.m., and will follow the shore of the lake to Veterans Memorial Stadium at the intersection of Chestnut and Linden streets. Parade applications may be

picked up at the American Legion post, AMVETS post, or Cadillac Area Visitors Bureau. Veterans are encouraged to walk in the parade, and a horse-drawn carriage also will be available to carry those unable to walk the route.

The ceremony at the stadium begins at 11 a.m. Accord-ing to Steve Birdwell, vice commander and finance officer of the Cadillac Area Honor Guard, the speaker this year is Jerry Benson of Cadillac.

An Army veteran, Benson was a driver for an Army chaplain in Vietnam.

Benson still has his kit he used to perform services for the deceased in the field. He will speak on his experi-ences, and give a demonstration of how they paid respect to the fallen.

Lake CityMembers of American Legion Post No. 300 kick off the

ceremonies at 10 a.m. as they march to Veterans Memo-rial Park at the corner of Main and Prospect streets.

The observance will include a flag ceremony, a 21-gun salute and the laying of a wreath at Lake Missaukee in remembrance of those who sailed the seas. A brief flag-lowering ceremony generally is also held at the Lake City Cemetery.

MantonThe veterans of Eugene Kimbel VFW Post No. 7806,

joined by the Manton High School Band, Boy Scouts and others, generally make three stops on Memorial Day.

There is a 9 a.m. ceremony at Greenwood Township Cemetery followed by a trip to Fairview Cemetery for a 10 a.m. ceremony. The day wraps up at Liberty Township Cemetery at 11 a.m., where the ladies aid provides cook-ies and coffee.

Reed CityReed City celebrates the start of summer with its first

farmers market of the season and a Monday Memorial Day celebration.

The Crossroads Farmers Market opens Saturday, May 23, and will be open every Saturday this summer from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Located on Chestnut Street in the Pompeiis parking lot, the market offers fresh fruits and vegetables, home-baked goods and home-grown products such as eggs, herbs, honey, and soaps, and locally made crafts.

On Memorial Day, May 25, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 2964 leads a parade that will include the Reed City Area Public Schools marching band. The pa-rade will begin at 9 a.m.

The parade starts at the Reed City Depot and travels along Upton Street to the Osceola County Courthouse, then to Woodland Cemetery on Church Street for the for-mal ceremony.

evaRtMemorial Day always takes on special meaning in Ev-

art, hometown of Joseph Guyton, the first American sol-dier to be killed on German territory in World War I.

Ceremonies begin 10 a.m. at Guyton Park and include a flag ceremony as well as the playing of Taps and a 21-gun salute, according to David Brickey. Brickey is the com-mander of VFW Post 7979 as well as Thomas E. Smith AMVETS Post 11.

Following the ceremony at the park a wreath-laying ceremony takes place on the Muskegon River.

Then its on to the Evart city cemetery for Taps, a salute and a flag ceremony.

It all wraps up with coffee and doughnuts at the VFW/AMVETS post, Brickey said.

For those looking to have lots of fun without spending too much money, disc golf might be just the ticket.

Played like regular golf, except for the use of Frisbee-type discs instead of a ball and clubs, the sport has gained massive popularity in the U.S. and Northern Michigan.

Three different courses in Wexford County offer a range of difficulty and terrain challenges for both the be-ginner and experienced player.

Courses at Kenwood Park and Diggins Hill are free for anyone to use.

Kenwood Park fea-tures 24 holes set on a flat course filled with trees that act as natu-ral obstacles.

The Diggins Hill course features 18 holes on a terrain with elevation shifts and plenty of trees.

The Wild Haven Disc Golf Resort, located a few miles south of Manton, features some of the most challenging holes in the area.

Owner Michael Wildner said the course is more wide open and contains shots from varying elevations and tee distances. He said wind also is more of a factor on his course.

The course is open for anyone to use but Wildner asked that players pay a small amount in order for him to main-tain the grounds and add improvements.

He asks for $2 to play nine holes, $3 for 18 holes, or $5 to play all day. Payments can be dropped in a tube on site, similar to how forest campground fees are paid.

The Kenwood Park course is located off North Boule-vard, in Cadillac. The Diggins Hill course is located off East River Street, in Cadillac. Wild Haven Disc Golf Re-sort is located on East 18 1/2 Road, which is off U.S. 131. The course has a sign that reads Yeti Tech, which is visible from the road.

The math is pretty impressive. So, too, usually are the results. The annual Cadillac News Track and Field Invitational

Meet has featured a U.S. Olympian, several NCAA Divi-sion I runners and a large number of MHSAA state cham-pions.

All of that from 11 schools in Wexford, Missaukee and Osceola counties.

The Olympian, of course, is Cadillacs Paul McMullen who competed in the 1996 Atlanta Games. The NCAA Division I athletes range from Cadillacs Katie (Erdman) Waits, Alisha (Cole) Reichenbach, Kaitlyn Patterson and Riley Norman to Pine Rivers Rachel Whitley and Lia Jones to Reed Citys Sami Michell.

This years version is the 43rd annual, making it the longest-running newspaper-sponsored honor roll meet in northern Michigan. It will be held again on Memorial Day, May 25, at Cadillacs Veterans Memorial Stadium.

While theres no superstars on the horizon for 2015, things could be wide open to set some individual and pro-gram bests on Memorial Day if the weather cooperates.

One girl to watch is Cadillac sophomore Liz Pyles in the shot put and discus. She might challenge meet records in those events that have stood for more than 20 years. Mar-

ions girls look like theyve returned to form with some talent in the sprint events and also the distances, while Manton has a couple of standouts, too, across the board.

On the boys side, Cadillac seniors Evan Lee (400-meter dash) and John Alberts (800) have done well in the early going while throwers Michael Holdship and TJ Baker are picking up where they left off last year.

The Vikings 1600 and 3200 meter relays are solid, as well.

The meet is a wrap up to the season for some and for oth-ers, its a warm-up for the MHSAA state finals.

It features student-athletes from Buckley, Cadillac, Ev-art, Lake City, Manton, Marion, McBain, Mesick, McBain Northern Michigan Christian, Pine River and Reed City.

It begins Memorial Day with the Parade of Athletes around 3:30 p.m. and the running events about 45 minutes after that.

Be sure to keep an eye on the Cadillac News for updates as the meet approaches. You can also track who is likely to qualify for the meet when the Cadillac News runs its week-ly honor rolls with the best performances in each event.

The day after the meet, the Cadillac News will announce one male and one female scholarship winner. The award, determined by the days gate receipts, is based on meet performance, academic performance and extracurricular involvement at their school and in their community in-volvement.

EVART While some see a block of wood and see kindling, there are oth-ers that see a blank canvas.

For artists who can see the potential for intricate art where others see tree pulp and splinters, there is an early summer gathering just for such like-minded artists who choose wood as their medium for expression.

The annual Wood Carvers Roundup, held at the Osceola County 4-H FFA Fairgrounds in Evart from June 3 to June 6, welcomes experienced and novice wood sculptors, carvers, and burners from all over the state and beyond.

During the event, wood carvers, ex-perts, venders, and curious spectators network while attending a series of workshops, tutorials, informal meets and more.

The popular annual event has a long history in the state, and remains one of the biggest gatherings of wood carvers in the country.

The Evart Roundup was established by the Chief Osceola Woodcarvers,

and was held in Mancelona, then moved to Cadillac before finding a home in Evart.

And the art of woodcarv-ing seems to finding a re-surgence as an art.

Event organizer Floyd Rhadigan reports that the 2014 roundup had record numbers of attendees, who came to experience the many free workshops and tutorials, let be renowned woodworking artists from all across the country.

This years event will include more than 50 free workshops.

While the workshops and admission to the roundup are free, there are costs for some supplies, tools and other items are available for sale.

Everyone is welcome to come at-tend, shop, witness woodworking art being created, or simply to socialize.

In addition to the workshops, there will be food available, an ice cream so-

cial, a carvers swap and an informal carvers music jam. Some non-wood-working workshops will be available for those accompanying woodworking enthusiasts.

For those traveling from out of town, fairground camping is available for $17 per night on a first come, first served basis.

For more information about the event, visit evartroundup.com or call the Osceola County Fairgrounds at (231) 734-5481.

MESICK The Mesick Jeep Bless-ing started off as a gathering of a handful of Jeep enthusiasts who would take to the trails outside Mesick following a short prayer.

It has transformed into an annual event that draws hundreds of Jeeps and other off-road vehicles, as well as thousands of spectators.

Deb and Gordy Stafford started the blessing 14 years ago.

Whoever thought it would get this big?, Deb said. But its always been about the blessing. To get people to-gether with like-minded interests and promote a safe year of off roading.

The Jeep Blessing embraces the spirit of fellowship. At the start of the event, a prayer for the safety of the riders and the vehicles during the off-road season is offered.

After that, off-road events are held

to test the skill of riders and the capa-bilities of their machines. Courses are rated for their difficulty, from the mod-erate stocker course to the brutal Chad Ville.

This years event will be held May 2, the Saturday before Mothers Day weekend, at the corner of M-37 and M-115, south of Mesick.

The cost to attend the event is $5 a person. For those under 16 years old, the event is free to attend.

To enter a vehicle in a course, the cost is $20 per driver for all entries. Drivers must be at least 16 years old with a valid drivers license. Drivers under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. Waivers must be signed at registration.

After the courses are complete, a pa-rade involving all the off-road vehicles will be held through Mesick and the

surrounding area. For more information, go to cadil-

INTERLOCHEN A multi-platinum selling artist is returning to Northern Michigan to headline one of the areas most popular music festivals.

Harry Connick, Jr. is returning to headline the Inter-lochen Summer 2015 Arts Festival. Connick Jr. will be performing Friday, July 31 at 8 p.m.

Other performances at the festival include the Beach Boys, The Doobie Brothers, Michael McDonald and Boz Scaggs. New to the festival this year are O.A.R. and Pink Martini. The concert series will feature more than 30 performances from musicians starting Tuesday June 18. The concert kicks off with a performance from Michael McDonald at 8 p.m.

The concert began nearly 50 years ago as a classical music concert. This season, many student, classical and theatrical performances will be connected to American composer Aaron Copland. Interlochen Center for the Arts presents a multi-disciplinary festival celebrating the composers visits to Interlochen in the 1960s and 70s. Highlights include performances by the Emerson String Quartet, violinist James Ehnes, soprano Christine Brew-er, the Martha Graham Dance Company and concert per-formances of Coplands only opera, The Tender Land.

Over the years, the concert has grown to include a vari-ety of different genres of music.

There is something really special about experi-encing a concert at Interlochen. I believe the unique combination of artistic excellence, dynamic learning environment and the beautiful setting all contribute to its popularity. There truly is nowhere else like this in the nation and people who attend concerts here experi-ence that, Christopher Gruits, executive director of Interlochen Presents, said. Getting your feet wet in a Michigan river means hav-ing the chance to see whats around the next bend and bring back some great summer memories.

The Pine River is more challenging than other area rivers, according to local canoeist Dave Foley. The stretch from Walker Bridge to Dobson Bridge is slightly easier if you want to give it a try. Canoers and kayakers find the section from Dobson Bridge to Peterson Bridge is the most fun. A permit, available from the U.S. Forest Service, is needed for some sections, including from Elm Flats to Low Bridge. Go online at www.recreation.gov or call 1-877-444-6777.

The Manistee River is generally a tamer experience all the way, and is good for canoeing, kayaking or tubing. Many people put in at Lucas Road. From there expect to take 2 to 2 1/2 hours to the U.S. 131 bridge. From U.S. 131 it is about 45 minutes more to the Old Grade Camp-ground but watch out for the raccoons if youre staying overnight. The trip from the Old Grade Campground to Baxter Bridge takes 3 to 5 hours and ends at a nice camp-ground at Baxter.

The Sable River is less frequently paddled but is clear and shallow, and a good place for trout fishing. The Little

Manistee River can be challenging and has many ob-stacles and tight turns. If youre looking for a wide, slow river, try the Muskegon River.

The Pere Marquette is another nice option. Many people paddle it from the M-37 crossing. You can try any of a half dozen sections from there all the way down to Custer.

Most importantly, be forewarned to take extra care while in the water. Be sober and wear a life jacket.

Also be cautious with electronics such as cell phones or digital cameras: chances always are good you will end up in the water at some point. Its also a good idea to se-cure eyeglasses and sunglasses with a string or band.

Spectators will see hundreds of classic cars and rides to remember this spring in downtown Cadillac.

The sound of classic Ameri-can muscle cars will be heard rumbling down Mitchell Street during Back to the Bricks 2015. The two-day classic car event will feature a Classic Car Blessing, Fun Run and downtown car show. The an-nual event kicks off Saturday, June 6, at 11 a.m. with the Classic Car Blessing at Godfrey Chevrolet. The afternoon continues with a cruise around the lakes and a Fun Run. On Sunday, June 7, Mitchell Street will be closed down from 11 a.m. 6 p.m. for the free classic car show. The Sunday line-up of events will host several food and car-related vendors, kids activities, door prizes and trophies.

There will also be a few new Saturday attractions added to the annual car show this year. An automotive style art exhibit in the park with food and live music and Pere Marquette 1225 steam rides have both been added to the outdoor event Saturday. Each year, hundreds of classic cars line the streets of downtown for the weekend. More than 400 cars, including a 1957 SS Chevrolet Chevelle and Rolls Royce Phantom rolled into town last year.

Back to the Bricks is an annual car cruise promoting the city of Flints automotive history. Back to the Bricks

was previously part of a statewide tour with a route that began in Flint and

went through Grand Rapids, Hart, Cadillac, West Branch, Oscoda and Mount Pleasant. However, Back to the Bricks announced licensing agreements with both Cadillac and Mount Pleasant communities for 2014.

Joy VanDrie, Cadillac Back to the Bricks Committee chair, said Back to

the Bricks is the largest event Cadil-lac has ever had in terms of residential

and out-of-town spectators and participants. Nearly 5,000 spectators toured the line of classic cars last year.

In 2012, when the tour first came to Cadillac, we rolled out the red carpet with more than 100 cars, VanDrie said. The next year, the number of registered cars dou-ble. We wanted to continue the success of this event.

Cars will be showcased in downtown Cadillac from Cass Street toward North Street.

VanDrie said Back to the Bricks 2015 is an opportunity for car enthusiasts to experience Cadillac and see some of the greatest classic cars in the Great Lakes.

We have people that come to Cadillac from all over the Great Lakes states for Back to the Bricks, VanDrie said.

Volunteers will be needed at morning registration both days to help secure the Fun Run locations and parking logistics. Those interested in volunteering should call 231-775-0657 or email contact information to visit@cadil-

Big plans for July 4th in CadillacCadillac will definitely make a big boom this Fourth of

    July.Cadillac Freedom Festival Committee Chairwoman

Gabby Chapman said for the past few years the fireworks have always been held on a day other than the Fourth of July holiday to not compete with other displays in the ar-ea. This year, however, Chapman said organizers decided to change that.

With the festival growing, as well as feedback from residents about not having the fireworks on the Fourth of July, it was decided to make the change, Chapman said.

The festival will take place July 2 to 5. Some events, such as the annual Water Fire Tribute to honor veterans, Thunder by the Lakeshore Motorcycle show, the free Community Picnic, and live music, will all return this year. New activities include a 5K race, a barbecue cookoff, dubbed Pork in the Park, as well as a carnival.

Chapman said the Pork in the Park event had 11 of the 12 cookers signed up by late March, which included six restaurants. The cookoff will have the 12 contestants square off to see who has the best ribs, baked beans and corn on the cob.

The cooking will start at 9 a.m. (on July 3). People will be able to sample and vote for their favorite from 3 to 7 p.m., Chapman said. There will be a small fee, you will need to pay to vote, but for that fee you will get ribs, beans and corn.

Besides the Pork in the Park, Chapman said there will be kids activities from 3 to 8 p.m. in the park, a Blessing of the Boats on July 3 at the city docks and DJ Shawny-D will be hosting a street dance on Lake Street beginning at 8:30 p.m. On July 3, the beverage garden will be open from 11 a.m. to midnight with all the proceeds benefiting the Cadillac Area Honor Guard.

On July 4, Chapman said festivities will kick off with the Grand Parade at 10 a.m. and as always staging for the event will be from Lake and Harris streets near Elk Al-ley. At 11 a.m. registration begins for the Thunder on the Lakeshore and the show goes from noon to 3:30 p.m.

At the Carl T. Johnson Hunting and Fishing Center the Mike Townsend Kids Fishing Tournament will be held with registration starting at 7 a.m. and the contest from 8 a.m. to noon. It is open to the first 40 registrants and weigh in is at 12:30 p.m., Chapman said.

As for entertainment at the Rotary Performing Arts Pavilion on July 4, Chapman said Big Ray and the Motor City Kings will be the featured entertainer. Again the Beverage Garden will be open, as well as various kids ac-tivities in the park.

To finish out the weekend, Chapman said a community church service will be held at 11 a.m. on July 5 followed by a community picnic in the park. The Beulah Land Quartet will be the last performers for the weekend from 1 to 3 p.m. and the carnival will continue as well as other kids activities. Chapman also said throughout the entire weekend food and merchandise vendors will be in the park as well.

Other events are still in the planning stages and will be announced at a later date.

For more information about the festival or any event going on in Cadillac, visit www.cadillacmichigan.com or call the Cadillac Area Visitors Bureau, (231) 775-0657.

While fireworks and the grand parade probably are the most popular events during the Greatest Fourth in the North celebration in Lake City, organizers hope those things arent the only reason people attend the annual event.

Each day of the festival, which takes place from Wednes-day, July 1, through Sunday, July 5, a variety of attractions will abound.

On Wednesday, July 1, the vendors will be opening up at 3 p.m. along with Schmidt Amusements carnival. The Battle of the Bands will get started at 6 p.m.

New this year will be junior karaoke contests on Thurs-day, July 2. The contests will be divided into two age groups, 5 through 12 and 13 through 17. The winner of the junior contest also will have the chance to perform during the se-nior competition later that night.

On Friday, July 3, beach volleyball starts out the day at the Missaukee County Park. Sign up begins at 9 a.m. and the games begin at 10 a.m.

The Venetian Parade should be floating by about 9 p.m.

If you want to join in on the fun with your boat call Bob or Lori Larsen at (231) 920-4127.

This year the craft show will be two days and they will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the United Methodist Church parking lot, just two blocks east of main street.

Also on Friday, Rosco the Clown, Rick Kelley, Cinderella, Midnight Chow and country artist Chris Higbee will pro-vide free entertainment.

On Saturday, July 4, the Athletic Boosters will host the 2K, 5K, and 10K beginning with 6:30 a.m. registration.

The Grand Parade begins at 10 a.m. Following the parade will be the traditional Ox Roast and Strawberry Festival.

Saturday is jam packed with entertainment including the Petosky Steel Drum Band, Princess Elsa, the Swift Brothers and good-ole-rock-n-roll from Sierra Shame.

Around dusk, fireworks will be rocketed into the night sky from platforms in Lake Missaukee.

A more detailed schedule of events will be available at the Lake City Chamber of Commerce office, in area businesses and in Michigan Welcome Centers in May.

  • When it comes to a patriotic celebration, the tiny vil-lage of Luther demonstrates it has a heart three times its size.

The towns Fourth of July holiday mixes a winning for-mula of patriotic pride, family-friendly fun and village history.

The freedom festival includes the traditional fireworks, food, parades and more, with a celebration rooted in the areas past.

In the early 1900s, Luther was a well-known logging village and home to about 1,500 people. Today, the village has fewer residents, but those ancestors keep the logging history alive.

The three-day Luther Logging Days festival, held dur-ing the Fourth of July weekend, celebrates Independence Day, as well as the areas rich lumber and logging heri-tage.

Annual favorites include an International Lumberjack Competition, kids games, a horse pull, softball tourna-ments and many other events.

At press time, details are still being finalized. But event organizers say each year brings new highlights and con-tests sure to entertain. What attendees can count on is music filling the streets on Friday, July 3 with country band Kris Hitchcock and Small Town Son and on Satur-day night, with local rock and roll favorite Epidemic.

Vendors line the street with many locally-made prod-ucts available to purchase or try.

And the festival ends on a high note, with fireworks fin-ishing out the celebration on Sunday evening at Millpond Park.

For more information or for a complete schedule, go to www.facebook.com/LutherLoggingDays or call Lori at (231) 629-5634.

LEROY The summer tradition with a strange name will un-dergo a slight change this year.

Razzasque Days Board President Lori Servello said unlike pre-vious years, which featured events spread over the course of two days, most of this years activities will be held over the course of one day.

Were trying to condense it to keep everyone involved during those two days, Servello said. Its always a nice homecoming type feel at Razzasque Days. Everyone knows its going to happen. Its a chance for people to reconnect when they come home.

Razzasque Days has been going on in LeRoy for a number of years and most people still have no clue what the name means but they do know what to expect when it takes place: Fireworks, a parade, a Miss LeRoy contest, a car show, various kids games and much more.

This years event will take place July 10-11, with most of the ac-tivities taking place on Saturday, July 11.

Chances are youve got a fishing pole or two tucked away in the back of the garage.

If a fishing license is the only thing you need to revisit your favorite fishing hole, the Depart-ment of Natural

Resources hopes to lure you to the water on Free Fishing Weekend.

This summers free fishing weekend is June 13 and 14. For two days, the state waives all fishing license fees for both residents and out-of-state visitors. Keep in mind that free fishing is not a free-for-all, however: all fishing regulations still apply. As it has in the past, the Carl T. Johnson Hunting and Fishing Center in Cadillac West will offer a fishing program over the weekend.

Past weekends have seen the center make its stock of fishing poles available for would-be fishermen to drop a line in the nearby canal con-necting lakes Cadillac and Mitchell, with anglers receiving help choosing bait, putting it on the hook and identifying their catch. The center is located at 6087 E. M-115 in Cadillac West.

DNR Fisheries Biologist Mark Tonello said he expects that this Junes Free Fishing weekend will be a great time. At that point in the season, Tonello said pan fish are usually on their beds and can be easily caught. He also said the weath-er in June is usually good and typically warm so many people are ready to get outside and have some fun.

In Cadillac we have tons of opportunities to go out fishing even without a boat. If you only fish one time a year that (free fishing weekend) is a great time to do, Tonello said.

Tonello also said if you need a copy of the fish-ing regulation for this season they are available online at www.michigan.gov/dnr, at any DNR of-fice or the Carl T. Johnson Hunting and Fishing Center.

For anyone familiar with the sweet-sounding stringed instrument known as the dulcimer, there is but one place thought of as the center of celebration for all things dulcimer.

At the heart of that love is Evart, Michigan home to the Worlds largest Hammered Dulcimer gathering.

For the lovers of the stringed instrument, Evart isnt simply a city.

It is the mecca for music in the dulcimer world, and every summer, thousands journey from across the state, across the country, and in some cases, across the conti-nent, to attend the annual dulcimer festival.

Hosted by the Original Dulcimer Players Club, the gathering is part musical workshops, part concert se-ries and part reunion but mostly, it is a peaceful place to gather and honor music and the camaraderie of stringed instrument enthusiasts.

Held at the Osceola County 4-H/FFA Fairgrounds, this years festival will take place from July 16-19, 2015.

Attendees begin arriving weeks prior to stake claim at their favorite campsite and to get a head start on the networking, music and momentum of the popular festi-val.

And the price is nearly right for anyone of any musi-cal interest.

The price of admission is $5, which earns attendees a pass for the entire event-every workshop, every tutorial, vendor arena, concert and those legendary, impromptu jam sessions that pop up all over the fairgrounds.

Because all work is done by volunteers, the festival is able to keep the costs down while offering a packed week of festival fun, from stage shows to games, pro-gram workshops, shopping and more.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding camping, call the office at 231-734-5481 or email [email protected].

For more information on the dulcimer festival, visit the ODPC website at www.dulcimers.com.

While all area summer fairs have a few things in common like midway rides, cot-ton candy and animals some have a way of standing out.

For those that participate in the Osceola County 4H-FFA Fair, the way to be different is to proudly highlight an industry that is the backbone of the county: agriculture.

At the Osceola County Fair, attendees can get their fill on fried fair food, entertaining rides and try-your-luck games.

But the real stars of the show are the children and the animals they are caretak-ers of.

The Osceola County Fair embraces its rural ties to the community with a fair that puts the animal shows, judging and market livestock front and center, along with the young farmers who show them off and sell them for profit.

The week-long fair in Osceola County highlights events like tractor pulls, youth livestock judging, horse shows, Agriculture Olympics and more.

For many families, the fair IS the sum-mer highlight, and the culmination of months of hard work in preparation for the week-long event.

This years events begin with barn place-ment and set up July 26, with animal weigh-ins and still exhibit set up.

But July 27, the action begins in earnest with the first of the animal judging and demonstrations.

Among the daily highlights are the horse demonstrations, tractor pulls, midway games, Farm Bureau chicken barbecue and the Friday night market livestock auctions.

For a complete schedule see sidebar, or for more information, visit www.osceola-countyfairgrounds.com or call the Osceola County Fairgrounds at (231) 734-5481.
