Its the festival that celebrates the elusive morel mush-room.

The Mesick Lions Clubs 55th annual Mesick Mushroom Festival is scheduled from Friday through Sunday, May 9-11, at various locations throughout the community.

Organizers are introducing two new events to this years lineup, Shiela Ferrel of the Mesick Lions Club says.

The first is Friday Night Live, a family-friendly event set to take place starting at 7 p.m. May 9 along Walter Street by Jewett Elementary School.

The event will feature kids activities like face paint-ing, balloon artists, a bounce house and a kids workshop courtesy of Home Depot. A Street Dance featuring singer/guitarist Brian Nolf also is planned as part of the evenings activities.

The Street Dance will be held in lieu of the Community Dance typically held the Saturday night of the festival, Fer-rel says.

Instead, the Super Kicker Rodeo will come to town Satur-day night.

The competition will feature bronc and bull riding and barrel racing, as well as contests for kids during intermis-

sion, she says.The rodeo is set to take place at 6 p.m. May 10 on a Lions

Club members property on West 16 Road, one mile east of M-37, Ferrel says. Admission has not yet been set, but Ferrel says it will be reasonably priced and a family rate will be of-fered. Look for more details about the rodeo in the Cadillac News closer to the festivals start.

The barrel racers are expected to ride on horseback in the Grand Parade, which runs along Mesick Avenue, and is scheduled to step off at noon Saturday. This years theme is Celebration of the Shrooms and this years grand marshal is Tim Anderson, Lions Club district governor for Cadillac, Mesick and Kaleva, Ferrel says.

The fun also includes the Mushroom River Run, a 5K run and 2K walk that starts at 8 a.m. Saturday, May 10, at North-ern Exposure Campground and winds along the North Country Trail and Manistee River.

Its over the river and through the woods, Ferrel says.The early registration fee is $18; its $20 after Sunday, May

4. Registration will be accepted until 7:45 a.m. the morning of the run. Race applications are online at www.mesick-mushroomfest.org.

A Sunday highlight is the annual antique car show and cruise, which takes place from 9 a.m. to noon. The cruise is a 20-mile ride from Ellens Corners at the intersection of M-37 and M-115 to the Wellston area and back.

Theres no fee to enter the car show or to participate in the cruise, Ferrel says. Trophies will be awarded.

The festival also features popular mainstays like the flea market, the hobby/craft show, the carnival and the mud bog.

Fall FestivalThe Mesick Lions Club is debuting the Mesick Fall Fes-

tival, which organizers are hoping will become an annual event.

This event is scheduled for Friday and Saturday, Sept. 12 and 13.

Organizers want to offer an event that would draw both locals and visitors, especially those looking to enjoy some

live music, Ferrel says.Plans are in the works for a music tent featuring a variety

of local talent, an art fair, food vendors, mud bog, kids ac-tivities and a firemans competition.

CadillacMemorial Day in Cadillac will harken back to the For-

gotten War of the Korean conflict, according to Steve Birdwell, commander of the Cadillac Area Honor Guard. Both the parade and the ceremony will be a salute to vet-erans who served in the war. A relatively new tradition continues to grow as organizers encourage veterans to walk or ride in the Memorial Day parade. Veterans will be able to climb on board open air wagons provided by the Buckley Old Engine Show or ride in air-conditioned comfort on Cadillac Wexford Transit Authority buses, Birdwell said.

Ceremonies begin with a wreath-laying ceremony at 9:30 a.m. at the City Dock on Lake Cadillac, not far from the Cadillac Rotary Performing Arts Pavilion. The pa-rade begins at 10 a.m. in downtown Cadillac, followed by a ceremony at Veterans Memorial Stadium at around 11 a.m. on the corner of Chestnut and Linden streets. Me-morial Day falls on May 26.

The observance includes a flag ceremony, a 21-gun salute and the laying of a wreath at Lake Missaukee in remembrance of those who sailed the seas. A brief flag-lowering ceremony generally is also held at the Lake City Cemetery.

Gone are a couple of the best performers this area has seen when it comes to high school track and field.

Reed City phenom Sami Michell has moved on to run and jump at the University of Michi-gan while Cadillac standout Riley Norman has taken his throwing talents to Michigan State University.

So the question is who will step up and make a name for themselves at the 42nd annual Ca-dillac News Track and Field Invitational Meet.

The meet the longest running newspaper-sponsored honor roll meet in northern Michi-gan will be held on Memorial Day, May 26, at Cadillacs Veterans Memorial Stadium.

With no superstars on the horizon for 2014, things could be wide open to set some individ-ual and program bests on Memorial Day if the snow has melted by then.

Some girls names to watch include Evarts Jessica Tea-Hui in the high jump, Northern Michigan Christians Adri Sigafoose in the 800- and 1600-meter runs, Pine Rivers Devyn Powell in the 400 dash, Reed Citys Hanna Price in the hurdles and Evarts Grace Hamilton in the 1600 and 3200.

On the boys side, Marions Ethan Russell will run well in the hurdles while teammate Tyrell Hall is strong in the sprints and long jump. Pine Rivers Abel Langworthy re-turns from an injury and will be one to watch in the pole vault while Evarts Santana Scott should do well in the distance events.

The meet is a wrap up to the season for some and for others, its a warm up for the state finals.

It features student-athletes from Buckley, Cadillac, Ev-art, Lake City, Manton, Marion, McBain, Mesick, North-

ern Michigan Christian, Pine River and Reed City.

It begins Memorial Day with the Parade of Athletes around 3:30 p.m. and the running events about 45 minutes after that.

Be sure to keep an eye on the Cadillac News for updates as the meet approaches. You can also track who is likely to qualify for the meet when the Cadillac News runs its weekly honor rolls with the best performances in each event.

The day after the meet, the Cadillac News will an-nounce one male and one female scholarship winner. The award, determined by the days gate receipts, is based upon meet performance, academic performance and extracurricular involvement at their school and in their community.

INTERLOCHEN World-renowned artists are com-ing to Northwest Michigan to put on a summer show for thousands of cheering fans.

Sheryl Crow, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Darius Rucker, Jackson Browne, Willie Nelson and Five for Fighting are just a few of the performers taking to the stage for the 2013 In-terlochen Arts Festival. Music fans will get to see more than 30 performances from more than 30 artists during the summer festival.

The festival kicks off on Friday, June 13 at 8 p.m. with a performance by Sheryl Crow with special guest Mandy Alexander at Kresge Auditorium.

The concert series began 50 years ago as a classical music concert, which has grown to include pop and rock music.

Christopher Gruits, executive director of Interlochen Program, said Interlochen provides a variety of talent on its stage.

We offer something for everyone at Interlochen. This includes classical virtuosos, country music superstars, blues masters, rock-n-roll legends, comic phenomenons,

visionary dancers and more, Gruits said. Our world-class guest artists help create a distinctive magic found nowhere else.

Concert performances will be held at Kresge Audito-rium, Dendrinos Chapel, Corson Auditorium and Upton-Morley Pavillion. There will also be a free concert featur-ing the Airmen of Note, the premier jazz ensemble of the U.S. Air Force at Interlochen Bowl.

This years concert series will end Aug. 20 at Kresge Auditorium with a performance by Steely Dan. Known for hits such as Reelin in the Years, Rikki Dont Lose That Number, Deacon Blues and more, Steely Dan has sold more than 30 million albums worldwide.

Each year Interlochen presents more than 600 perfor-mances from faculty, students and guest artists.

Fresh food finds at area markets


CADILLAC Car lovers across the state will see many of their favorite classic automobiles gathered in down-town Cadillac for the Back to the Bricks 2014 car show.

Downtown Mitchell Street will close down as the streets are filled with music, vendors and a showcase of one-of-a-kind cars.

From June 7-8, hundreds of classic cars and entertain-ment will fill up five city blocks, five lanes wide for the free event. Registration is also free this year, with the first 200 pre-registered cars receiving a free commemora-tive T-shirt.

The summer classic car day will feature a Classic Car Blessing, Fun Run and Downtown Car Show. The event starts June 7 with a Blessing, Cruise and Fun Run with awards Saturday evening. On Sunday, downtown Cadil-lacs main street will showcase cars from across the state.

Typically, the Lakeshore to Lakeshore tour cruises through several cities, including Rockford, Mt. Pleasant, West Branch, Oscoda, Hart and Cadillac.

However, this year, event organizers have instead li-censed the shows in both Cadillac and Mt. Pleasant.

The Cadillac show will be one of three Back to the Bricks car shows, including a show in Flint.

It is the 10th anniversary of the car show and Cadillac is bringing new attractions to the event.

The Saturday Blessing and cruise fun run are new ad-ditions at this years event that will highlight the Nation-al Forest and area attractions. The cruise is a 50-100 mile drive around the area lakes and through the National Forest surrounding Cadillac.

Joy VanDrie, executive director of the Cadillac Area Visitors Bureau, said the two-day event will showcase many of the areas attractions.

On Saturday, we are really focusing on introducing ev-eryone to the greater Cadillac area, VanDrie said. On Sunday, were bringing everyone downtown.

In 2012, the downtown car show featured more than 120 cars. In 2013, more than 250 classic automobiles were showcased at the event. VanDrie said event organizers are planning to feature anywhere from 250-300 classic automobiles this year.

Jerry Preston, secretary for Back to the Bricks, Inc. said, hes excited to see what new attractions Cadillac will feature at this years car show.

Back to the Bricks has had a great relationship with Cadillac and we hope the event becomes a tradition for the city, Preston said.

MARION For the 75th anniversary of the Marion Fair, event organizers decided to highlight the kid-friendly roots of the event.

It has always been geared toward kids and family, organizer Rebecca Johnson said. We try to make it a little better every year.

The theme of this years fair is Diamonds are Forever, and So are Our Kids.

Although the Marion Fair is known for booking up-and-coming country music stars, this years musical guest will be Petoskeys Steel Drum Band, which is comprised of high school students.

They are pretty cool, Johnson said.Johnson said they may even be getting

a visit from Gov. Rick Snyder this year, al-though that has not been confirmed.

The fair starts on June 22, with livestock entry and a performance by the Calvary-men at 7 p.m. at the Grandstand, followed by strawberry shortcake social.

Where some see a simple block of wood, others see a blank canvas for art.

Those people are called woodworkers, a hobby for some, a livelihood for others and a passion requir-ing skill, time, and patience.

For anyone interested in woodworking, the an-nual Wood Carvers Roundup in Evart has become a must-do on the wood makers circuit.

Now in its 16th year, the Wood Carvers Roundup successfully draws carvers from all around the country and beyond because of a mix of informa-tion, education, fellowship and friendship, said Bob Holder, one of the event organizers in Evart.

Its a little carving, a lot of teaching, and mostly talking about carving, ideas and asking each other questions, he said.

Structured with carving events and tips for begin-ners to experts in the business, the event is geared mostly for people with a real interest in the craft.

And perhaps interest isnt the word.With people packing the hotels and campgrounds,

many arriving days before the event, the local carvers are joined at the roundup by carving afi-cionados and enthusiasts from all over the country and beyond the borders of the United States, said Holder.

The main focus of the roundup is to share tech-niques and to learn and explore some of the many different types of carving, but whatever the various workshops and seminars, the premise of the Wood

Carvers Roundup is simple yet successful.Said Holder, The main thing is the people who

come do so because of a love of carving.

Thousands of residents and visitors from around the area and state will converge on Lake City and Cadillac to partake in events geared at having fun and celebrating the Fourth of July.

Lake Citys Greatest Fourth in the North is a staple of the annual celebration of our countrys birth and 2014 will be no different. This years GFITN will start July 2 and continues through July 6. There will be new events and acts as well as things people are familiar with.

The Grand Parade, which occurs on July 4, usually has about 120 entries and runs about two hours. It is one of the oldest events and one of the biggest during the week. The kids parade will be held on July 5 as well as other kid-centered events.

Lake City Area Chamber of Commerce Administrative Assistant Kim Mosher said this years football theme is Its Kick-Off Time at the Greatest 4th in the North.

To coincide with the theme, festival goers will have the opportunity to win a 2014 Chevrolet Camero in the an-nual car raffle (R25248). This years model will be bright yellow with black rally stripe package and various bells and whistles including a sunroof and remote car starter. While the car is the main prize, other prizes also are top notch.

Second place will be a tailgate party package from Ebels Family Center in Falmouth while third place gets handmade dolls from Gene Schooley.

In addition to the parade, there are numerous events and acts leading up to Independence Day. They include vendors in the city park; the carnival; many entertain-ers/street performers; a volleyball tournament; free en-tertainment nightly and, of course, fireworks over Lake Missaukee at dusk on the Fourth of July.

We invite everyone to come with their families and have lots of fun, Mosher said.

Independence Day


In Cadillac, Gabby Chapman of the Cadillac Area Visitors Bureau said after the success of last years Cadillac Free-dom Festival celebration, it was a no-brainer that it would be held again in 2014. Last years celebration drew crowds to downtown Cadillac thanks to events such as the annual parade, musical entertainment at the Cadillac Rotary Per-forming Arts Pavilion, a Water Fire Tribute to veterans, a motorcycle show, and fireworks.

This years event will be July 4 through July 6 with fire-works over Lake Cadillac on July 5.

Back by popular demand will be the Mongoose Monster Truck, which will be offering rides throughout the day on July 5. There also will be a Blessing of the Boats on July 6 following the community church service at the Rotary Per-forming Arts Pavilion as well as a community picnic.

The event will again have kids activities including pony rides and kids games. Activities for teens and tweens such as a texting competition also are being planned.

It will be a great weekend to get out and have some fun, Chapman said.

EVART They call the Independence Day celebration so big, they have to start a day early.

In the small town of Evart, this is one patriotic party.Festivities begin July 3 at the Osceola County Fairgrounds with a

concert by 33rd Street band, and continues into the evening with the fire-works show over the fairgrounds at dusk.

We are known for our fireworks show, people come from all over just to see it, said Eric Schmidt of the Evart Chamber of Commerce.

That isnt the end of the birthday party, as events continue all day on the Fourth of July, beginning with a 5K that finishes just as the sun begins to rise for the day.

After that, people will line the street for a patriotic parade down Main Street at 11 a.m., bringing jugglers, bands, antique tractors and more, all dressed in their Independence Day best.

The party continues as the fun moves to Riverside Park for the annual Party in the Park, complete with kids games, vendors, live music and more, as the Evart Lions Club roasts up a delectable chicken dinner for the masses to enjoy.

CADILLAC For some, the love of creating started as children and eventually helped these people became arti-sans as adults.

It can be a hobby, part-time thing or their jobs and on July 18 and 19, the 46th annual Cadillac Arts Festival will showcase their works. This year, it is anticipated that about 100 artists will again flood Cadillac City Park with their wares.

On Friday, July 18, exhibit booths will be open from 1 to 7 p.m. On Saturday, July 19, the booths will open at 10 a.m. and close at 5 p.m.

Artists booths and food vendors will be the main attrac-tions on July 18 but multiple entertainment options will be available on July 19. Those events include the annual Kids Create-In where children can make crafts, and the String Petting Zoo, where children can try various stringed in-struments thanks to the Cadillac Strings Association.

The Rotary Performing Arts Pavilion will host live en-tertainment including the Cadillac Symphony Orchestra. There will be musicians in another area of the festival grounds where musicians will play throughout the day, said committee member Jim Smith.

The annual Taste of Cadillac is held the same weekend. The Taste of Cadillac is where local businesses and orga-nizations serve a variety of dishes from brats and burgers to gyros and pizza, sloppy Joes, walking tacos and baked potatoes, as well as desserts such as pie, cheesecake, cook-ies and cupcakes.

EVART Stop nearly anyone at the Dulcimer Festival at the Osceola County Fairgrounds in Evart and they can assure you of a few things.

The first is if you come once, you will come again.It becomes a part of peoples life, said Gail Schwandt

of the Original Dulcimers Players Club, (ODPC) the or-ganization that launched the first dulcimer gathering 42 years ago.

The second thing is, once you come, you are family in the dulcimer world.

And while Schwandt said she hasnt missed an Evart which to dulcimer enthusiasts, represents the event, as well as the location of the annual gathering of acous-tic music lovers, she certainly isnt alone as a dulcimer festival old timer, as she calls it.

The O.D.P.C. or Original Dulcimer Players Club, which puts on the festival, is the largest and oldest hammered dulcimer club in the world. The original dulcimer from the clubs name means the hammered dulcimer.

The festival begins the third Thursday in July, but fes-tival loyalists begin arriving sometimes weeks before, camping at the fairgrounds and getting a head start on the festival fun.

Young and old, musical prodigy and musical novice,

dulcimer expert or first timer, the festival is all about tra-dition, history, and sharing the dulcimer love.

Part networking with other music enthusiasts, part workshops and jam sessions and part concert series, the festival brings thousands to the Evart area for the three-day celebration where the stringed instrument is the star of the show.

With the sweet sounds of the dulcimer, fiddle, banjo and guitar filling the air, the festival has a decidedly simple, goal with a fun vibe, explains Schwandt.

Everyone is happy to be here because we are all about the music.

CADILLAC Whether its learning how to bear hunt, duck hunt or fly fish, the Carl T. Johnson Hunting and Fishing Center is offering classes teaching outdoor en-thusiasts how to get out and enjoy nature.

Ed Shaw, interpreter for the Department of Natural Resources, said the goal of the Center is to help both ama-teur and veteran hunters and fishers improve their skills.

We want people to learn step-by-step how to become intelligent and ethical anglers and hunters, Shaw said. You never stop learning.

The center is offering summer run steelhead classes, a fly fishing school and more.

Among the centers classes, Shaw said the Bear Hunt-ing School is one of the most highly-attended classes the center offers. The clinics are offered at the center.

The clinics will be offered Aug. 9, 10 and 16 in Cadillac. Shaw said the class is a unique learning experience

taught by trained bear hunters.

People usually sign up for the Bear Hunting School in-stantly. Thats why were offering three this year, Shaw said.

Shaw said the center has become the go-to place in Michigan for people who want to learn more about hunt-ing and fishing.

Regardless of your skill level, he said its always good to be a life-long learner. No matter how small in detail, there is always something new to learn, he said.

Those little tips and tricks you can learn may make all the difference in taking you to the next level as a hunter or fisher, Shaw said.

The Carl T. Johnson Hunting and Fishing Center is lo-cated at 6087 E M-115 in Cadillac. A recreation passport is required for entry into the state park.

LEROY They still dont know what the name means, but organizers of the 41st annual LeRoy Razzasque Days hope the unique event will continue for another 41 years.

Its a great, small town celebration, Razzasque Board President Lori Servello said. Its kind of like a home-coming for a lot of people. But were still trying to get to the bottom of what the name means.

Although planning for this years Razzasque Days still was in its preliminary stages at the time of this publica-tion, Servello said all the signature events will return, including a kids parade, grand parade, antique car show, softball, horseshoe, poker, arm wrestling, and bucket bri-gade tournaments, antique car show, adult beverage tent

and fireworks.This years event will begin on Friday, July 11, at 11

a.m., with a kids parade. Events will be held all day and night. They will resume on Saturday, July 12, at 10 a.m., with the grand parade.

During both days of the event, vendors will offer food, crafts and merchandise, and an adult beverage tent will be set up until 1 a.m.

Servello said they are considering adding new activi-ties to the event, but nothing has been decided yet.

MANTON Its easy to miss all the work and detail some truck driv-ers put into their rigs, which is why one area man decided to organize an event that showcases these impres-sive machines.

The Manton Days Truck Show, for-merly Buckley Days, will once again bring trucking enthusiasts and curi-ous onlookers together for two days of entertainment.

Event organizer, Jamie Cade, said the event is an opportunity to sit back, relax, listen to some music, and see up close and personal some of the crazy things (truckers) have done to their rigs.

Cade said last years truck show brought out six to seven thousand onlookers, as well as dozens of trucks that lined the streets of the Manton Sta-tion Park area.

Manton is a perfect spot to have this, Cade said. Its re-

Festivities begin Friday, July 18, when registration for trucks begins after 4 p.m. Live music will start around 6 p.m. and will last all night.
