North Lakes Counselling Services

Hi Leonie,

i have been looking for a life partner for almost three years now and what i am finding is that men are flat out liars!

they read that you love animals, so they say they are involved in animal welfare but when you get to know them guess what? no they are not. they say that they are well travelled and no they are not. they say that they are into clean eating and waste control and they are not.

i understand that internet dating is the way it’s done now days, but i am finding that the profiles these guys are writing are flat out fiction, so how can it work? one guy posted pictures of him supposedly helping out in the Brisbane floods, turned out he was clearing out a shed (to live in) on his uncles’ property and wanted to look like a “do gooder” and he was the one i trusted the most.

i’ve done the pub thing. i’ve done the friend set up thing and i’ve done the singles nights and speed dating. What is going on? Why are these guys lying? they must know that the truth will out. insight please oh wise Leonie of the Messenger.

Fed up Fiona/Mango Hill

Hi Fiona,

the first thing i want to say is that men don’t have a monopoly on lying and deceitful behaviour and this is something we see in both sexes so please don’t genderise dishonesty.

What i believe is happening is something that the spectator journalist James Bartholomew coined as Virtue signalling. He says this is the way in which many people say or write things to indicate that they are virtuous." to this i would add behave, to say and write things to indicate that they are virtuous. People have been lying about

their resumes, their dating profiles and their personal attributes for literally ages.

i remember noticing back in the seventies that guys trying to pick up girls would carry around puppies to get girls to engage with them and think that they are wonderful because they have and love puppies. i also

knew a guy who drove around with stickers on his car that said save the Whales, support RsPCa and many other kinds of stickers or t-shirt’s that would send the signal “i’m a great and caring guy”

so, some of the guys you are experiencing are Virtue signalling but at least one you have spoken about is also doing something call Moral Posturing. Moral posturing according to some articles means taking a stance or position on something, often political, but sometimes personal that does not honestly represent a person’s true beliefs, morals or ethics. its just a new term for a hypocrite in my view. We have lots of fancy new terms for behaviours that are as old as the hills.

the bottom line is that there are always going to be duplicitous people who misrepresent themselves. this is a problem that affects everyone, not just yourself. it’s important to pay attention and ensure that you weed these people out at the earliest opportunity. Here’s a quote that i feel is very apt

“When someone shows you who they are, believe them the first time” - Maya Angelou.

HeaLtHNeW HoPe foR CYstiC fiBRosisthere is no cure for cystic fibrosis. it is a life - shortening, inherited disease that attacks the digestive system and slowly shuts down the lungs. With one australian child born with Cf every week, it is the most common life shortening genetic condition in australia.

People living with Cf can spend the equivalent of four months of full-time work each year receiving treatment, take up to 80 pills a day, undergo tough physiotherapy regimes, hospital admissions several times a year and constantly cope with debilitating lung and gastrointestinal disease.

the life expectancy of patients with cystic fibrosis could be radically altered with new triple-combination drug treatment being trialled at the Mater Hospital.

Mater Research institute-university of Queensland (MRi-uQ) researcher Dr Lucy Burr said seven patients were enrolled in Phase 2 of the clinical trial, which aimed to treat the underlying cause of cystic fibrosis.

“a new drug, known as VX-445, in combination with two existing treatments, has demonstrated lung function improvement of around 10 per cent – which is really significant for cystic fibrosis patients,” Dr Burr said.

“Patients in our trial had significant increases in their lung function that they hadn’t been able to

achieve previously.”

Dr Burr said the early phase study showed some exciting progress.

“in cystic fibrosis, most patients will die from lung disease, so improving or maintaining their lung function is the mainstay of treatment.”

in australia, a baby is born every four days with cystic fibrosis.

there is currently no cure for the genetic disorder which primarily affects the lungs and digestive system, reducing life expectancy to 37.

Dr Burr said that in cystic fibrosis, a protein called CftR did not do its job of transporting salt and water in and out of cells.

“This affects the pancreas, liver, lungs, sinuses… everything,” Dr Burr said.

“a lot of our therapies are directed at treating the consequences of CftR dysfunction: decreased lung function, bowel function, pancreatic problems and really thick, sticky, dehydrated mucus."

“there are two drugs on the market in australia

which target the CtfR protein to make it work better in patients with specific gene mutations – giving access to treatment for about 50 per cent of the cystic fibrosis population."

“this triple combination has the potential to treat 90 per cent of patients.”

Dr Burr said the trial used the triple-combination therapy, to target the CftR protein in patients with a ‘f508del’ gene mutation.

“two of the drugs help the protein move through the cell, and one of the drugs helps the protein channel open,” she said.

“adding the extra drug seemed be the key to making the dual combination work much better."

“the drug improved the protein function, which we measured through sweat chloride in patients."

“it also significantly improved their lung function and quality of life – and that was only over a four week period.”

Dr Burr said the development of drugs that target the CftR was an exciting step forward for cystic fibrosis care.

“When you’re targeting the actual problem, there’s great potential for these medications to change, and lengthen, the lives of patients with the illness.”

Mater is currently participating in Phase 3 of the clinical trial.

the study is published in the New england Journal of Medicine (Doi 10.1056/NeJMoa1807120).

QueeNSlaNd theatre'S heddaDate: 10 November to 8 December, 2018

Location: Bille Brown Theatre, Queensland Theatre

Hedda Gabler is railing against her life. She didn’t marry bogan drug slinger George Tesman so she could play housewife in a monstrous Gold Coast mansion with white leather couches, blingy chandeliers and endless rounds of Aperol Spritz.

She wants something much more. Now her old flame, Ejlert Løvborg, is out of prison and off the junk. Is he about to slice off a piece of George’s empire? Maybe Hedda can pull some strings to work this to her advantage.

Logie Award-winning actor Danielle Cormack (Wentworth, Rake) is the Hedda we’ve all been waiting to see. Melissa Bubnic gives us a local version of the Henrik Ibsen classic that is as dangerous and surprising as its heroine.

ReaL estate

the ReiQ Residential Vacancy Rate report for the september

quarter has revealed that increased rental demand of about 1.1 per cent for the past quarter and 3.7 per cent for the past year has been a key contributor to the general tightening of vacancies throughout the state.

Queensland’s annual population growth of 1.7 per cent or about 83,330 new residents, (for the year to March 2018) has helped absorb about 6200 net new rental properties over the september quarter and more than 21,120 net new rental properties for the past year.

the numbers of residential bonds held by the Residential tenancies authority (Rta) is increasing with 588,039 bonds held by the Rta in the 12 months to september 2018 up from 566,914 bonds during the same period in 2017.

supply has also played a pivotal role in shaping the current state of the rental market. tighter lending criteria and higher interest rates continue discouraging individual investors to enter the property market and limiting the increase in rental supply. this could potentially change if more new rental supply is released directly by developers into the rental market.

the Queensland rental market has strengthened again this quarter, reporting more tight markets and fewer weak markets compared to the previous quarter. in september

2018, Queensland reported 27 tight rental markets, four healthy markets and four weak markets compared to 24 tight markets, five healthy markets and seven weak markets for the June quarter.

the greater Brisbane rental market is tight, at 2.2 per cent. Within greater Brisbane, Logan and Caboolture are the only markets that are in the healthy range, at 3.5 per cent and 2.8 per cent respectively.

the rental market in Brisbane Lga tightened for a second consecutive quarter, to 2.0 per cent in september. While property managers continue expressing concerns about oversupply of rental stock in the capital city, particularly for medium-to-high density dwellings, vacancies for both, inner Brisbane and Brisbane’s middle ring, have fallen to the tight range over the quarter.

for the september 2018 quarter median rents in greater Brisbane for three-bedroom houses, two-bedroom units and three-bedroom townhouses each increased 2.4 per cent for the past year while anecdotal evidence from property managers reveals that good property location is critical to maintain low vacancies as tenants continue favouring proximity to the city, public transport and amenities.

the rental market in Moreton Bay continued operating within the tight range as tenants favour well-priced rentals in proximity to public transport.

stoRMs aHeaDtenants and property owners/managers urged to be preparedstorm season is already well underway in Queensland after wild weather lashed parts of south-east Queensland in october.

in the aftermath of extreme weather events, tenants and property managers/owners are urged to make contact early and discuss arrangements for cleaning up and making repairs.

Residential tenancies authority (Rta) Chief executive officer Jennifer Morgan said maintaining open communication is key to ensuring the best outcome for everyone after events like storms, cyclones and flooding.

“Property managers/owners have a legal responsibility to make sure the rental property is safe and fit to live in,” Ms Morgan said.

“they are responsible for the repairs and maintenance necessary to bring the property back to a livable condition, which should also comply with health and safety laws.”

obligations for repairs and maintenance apply to building structures, fences, large trees, pools and any other inclusions.

“tenants should alert the property managers/owners of any repairs or maintenance needed to minimise damage to the property, and where damage is caused by severe weather events, tenants should remove and clean up their own possessions,” she said.

although tenants are responsible for insuring

their own possessions, property managers/owners may need to make insurance claims for damage to the property after adverse weather events. keeping lines of communication open with the tenant during this time of recovery and informing them each step of the way is good practice.

everyone involved in a tenancy should plan ahead for storm season. the Rta has a variety

of information to help tenants and property managers/owners manage severe weather events, including a webinar on preparing for storm season and a natural disasters fact sheet.

find out more about requirements for the condition of a rental property and repairs in a rental property by phoning the Rta direct on 1300 366 311.
