Term 2 Week 9 - Wednesday June 17 2020

Dear Parents and Carers,

COVID-19 has a great deal to answer for as we continue to wait for more restrictions to ease.

For schools, nothing has changed and we continue to encourage you to stop, drop and go.

By limiting the number of adults in the school this enables us to continue to ensure the safety of all. As we

near the end of the term it is still very important that if your child is sick that you keep them home. If you,

your child or someone in the family or whom you have been around are tested for COVID-19 please let me

know as soon as possible as there are implications for staff and families which I may need to act on.

School Opinion Survey (SOS)

Due to the changes in learning this term, the School Opinion Survey has been modified to gather

information about learning arrangements in Term 2 with just a small number of the regular SOS questions

that more broadly reflect the entire year. Participation in the survey is anonymous and you are encouraged to take this opportunity

to have your say. The survey form has been designed so that it can easily be completed on a computer or smartphone. The survey

will not take more than 5 minutes and it provides us with valuable information to work on to improve our school and the

departments’ response to COVID-19 to inform future policy.

Everyone benefits if we can improve our school so help us by taking a couple of minutes to complete this. If you do it now you

won’t have to worry about it again. However you have until Term 3 Week 1 Friday July 17 to do so.

We encourage you to complete the survey online through the following link.

If you are unable to do so on computer or smartphone please let the office know so office staff can arrange for a hard copy for you

through the SOS address.

Book Work

During the next two weeks the Leadership Team and I will be conducting a Book Work check in classes. Keeping books neat and tidy

might seem like old fashioned values but benefit the student greatly if students can maintain it.

Oonoonba SS has a Book Work policy which includes ruling margins down the side of the page, including the date on work, using a

sharp pencil, neat and correct formation of letters and using a ruler or leaving out a line to section off one lot of work from another.

Due to the use of technology when students are younger, fine motor skills have declined. Students these days grow up being able

to swipe which is a different skill than is required for handwriting. Fine motor skills are involved in smaller movements that occur in

the wrists, hands, fingers, feet and toes. Handwriting therefore is not valued by some students and some also find it difficult as they

have not used these skills as a young child. The teaching of handwriting is still very much a part of the curriculum. If your child

needs more practice there are relevant QLD Handwriting texts that you can purchase. Other great ways to practice fine motor skills

include: getting children to pick up pegs from within a bucket and peg them on the bucket or line; using finger puppets to tell a

story; cutting using scissors and computer keyboards. With holidays coming up this could be a great activity for your child/children.

For more information contact your class teacher, Support teacher Literacy and Numeracy or me.

School Visit

Today Melissa Jackson, Assistant Regional Director will be visiting the school for the term visit and to check on how things are going

at Oonoonba SS. We can’t wait to show her all the good work we are doing!

Enrolments for 2021

Yes it is that time of the year when we are starting to promote our school for

new enrolments for 2021. Let all your friends know that we have vacancies in

every year level.

If you have a child age appropriate for prep for next year get your enrolment

forms in so that we can monitor our vacancies. Next week we will be able to

provide dates for Transition activities in Term 3 and Term 4.

Farewell and Good Luck!

Farewell to our DRT Greg Anderson who is leaving us and moving over to Bohle State School for the remainder of the year. We

were very lucky to have Greg teaching at our school for Term 1, 2020 and we wish him all the best in the future.

Sporting News from Mr Green Cross Country @ Home: Well done to Ryan Miller, Emilia Orr, Cullen Mann and Finn Riddle for participating in the Northern Cross Country@Home. A big congratulations needs to go to Cullen Mann (10yrs) and Finn Riddle (11yrs) for finishing in 3rd place respectively. With Covid-19 shutting down sport across the nation, this was a great way to keep students involved in 'normal' school sport. Return to Sport: Last week I received an email from our Director General outlining information about rebooting of school sport. Townsville School Sport will be meeting this week to discuss what our path for rebooting school sport will look like. I hope to have some further information soon on what this will look like for our school also. Handball Competition: This week we will see the finals of the Year 5 handball competition play out in the CPA. The handball competition has been running for a few weeks now and has been a huge hit for the Year 5 students. Stay tuned to hear who the grade 5 boys and girls champions are. Next term we will look at running a Year 6 handball competition. Billy Green - Health and Physical Education Teacher

FROM THE DEPUTY’S DESK

This week, we have checked on the Third Party Website permissions for Prep to Year 6 students and those students who have newly enrolled in recent weeks. In, particular we have checked those permissions for the online web based educational site Matific. We have invested $3500 this year, and will invest another $3500, next year in order to give students enrolled in our school (and teaching staff) access to this site from now to the end of the 2021 school year. If our records indicate that your child currently does not have permission for Matific, a new permissions form will be sent home this week via the classroom teacher for parents/carers to read sign and return promptly, to the classroom. Matific enables teachers to provide online learning opportunities for students in their class in the curriculum area of Mathematics. Matific can be accessed via a desktop computer or a laptop device. For ipads and android devices, download the following relevant free app from the appropriate app store: Matific Student (iOS) Matific Student (Android) On these devices, accessing Matific via the app is the most effective way to do so. Students retain the same log in details as they had during the complimentary access period in the first five weeks of school this term. New students to our school, since then, will receive their log in details from their classroom teacher. Bicycle, Scooter and Pedestrian Safety If your child travels to and from school by means other than motor vehicle, please speak with them so that you are very sure and confident of their own safe behaviours and correct use of pathways, pedestrian crossings, roadways and footpaths.

Please ensure that they have a suitably fitted helmet when riding a bicycle or scooter.

Whilst our bicycle enclosure is locked during the day, students must still have a lock to secure their bike/scooter to the bike racks, as the enclosure is not always locked at the same times.

Have a great week! Trevor Milton Deputy Principal

Tuckshop News from Mel Wow! Can you believe we are now in week 9? Time sure does fly by when you're having fun. I would firstly like to say thank you to all those families who have continued to support our little tuckshop over the last few weeks of term since returning back to school. Without your support, we would not be able to provide such a service to our school community. There has been much excitement with the addition of the slushy machine to the tuckshop as I am sure many of you will have heard. There have been a few hiccups along the way, however I hope that these are now sorted and slush puppies will be available over the counter Wednesday to Friday at first break. Next week, the last week of term, we will celebrate what we typically know as the 'Show Holidays' with a Show Day themed Red Food Day on Wednesday 24th of June. Orders can be placed for the remainder of this week of at the tuckshop counter between 8:30am and 9am or via flexischools. Have a great week everyone, and I look forward to celebrating the last week of term with our Red Food Day next week! Regards Mel

NUDE FOOD NINJAS

Prep O, 1P & 3KR

Congratulations! Nude Food Tip of the Week

Remember that unwrapping food from single

use packets at home just so it is nude for one

school lunch defeats the goal of Nude Food

to minimise single use packaging.

Buying snacks, such as biscuits or yoghurt, in

bulk and decanting into smaller reusable

containers is the aim, significantly reducing

the amount of packaging going to landfill!

Even better—pack fresh, whole foods for

snacks that don’t require any packaging!

Advancing Clean Energy

School Project

Thanks to the government’s Advancing Clean Energy School project, Oonoonba State School is one of 20 schools

to be selected in the first round to have solar panels installed. Our system was installed earlier this term.

Solar power is free and clean renewable energy from the sun, so it is great for the environment!

1/3 of our power usage at the school will be generated by these solar panels.

How many solar panels do you think there are? Happy counting!!
