From all reports the carnivals were a great success and the spirit of Oonoonba was well and truly noted. Carnivals and events such as this require a great deal of organisation and I would like to thank Mr Milton (DP), Mr Green (HPE) and Ms Weston (Office) for all of their work in organising the carnivals and to our staff, who attended the carnival and those who remained at school, who all had important roles to play to ensure a successful day for the students. Staff Update I would like to take this opportunity to thank the following staff for their contribution to Oonoonba SS over the years: Ms Weston (transferring to Northshore) and Mrs Hunter (resigned to work in her husband’s business) and Mrs Dale (Special Education Program Teacher) who is working at Vincent SS this year and will return to Oonoonba next year. We wish these staff members all the best. Independent Public School (IPS) Oonoonba State School is an Independent Public School. The community of staff and parents supported our application at the end of 2016 to nominate to become an IPS. We are one of 250 schools called IPS. Schools who nominated were selected on the basis of being a high performing school. The research shows that when schools work together the system is stronger and of course, we all want a stronger and better state school sys- tem for our students. As part of being an IPS a constitution was developed and a School Council is formed. These occurred for us in 2017 and last week our School Council met for the first time. Over the next few meetings we will formalise what it is that we will work on to ensure Oonoonba continues to be successful. Our School Council includes Penny Cockrem (Chair and Staff Representative), Sherryl Firth (Secretary and Parent Representative), Felisha Crawford (Staff Representative), Karen Salata (Parent Representative), Vivien Eddy (P&C President) and myself as Principal. School Priorities As I have outlined in previous newsletters already this year we will be working on three main areas including improving Writing, Numeracy and Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL). I would like to focus on PBL this week. Our Responsible Behaviour Plan clearly outlines that we are focused on ensuring that teachers have the right to teach and students have the right to learn therefore we expect students to behave in an acceptable way so that teaching and learning can occur. PBL is a framework and a way of working to ensure that all stakeholders clearly understand their role. It is based on evidence and in a nutshell is explained as, “Positive Behaviour for Learning is a region or school’s process for teaching expected social and behavioural skills so the focus can be on teaching and learning.” The PBL framework will be developed this year and lead by a team of staff. There will be an ongoing commitment over the next few years to fully embed this framework. We look forward to keeping you informed as we continue our work. Student Free Day- Date Claimer Last year, the Minister for Education had declared Monday 16 April as a Student Free Day across Qld to coincide with the conclusion of the Commonwealth Games at the Gold Coast. Due to the need for buses in the south being required for attendees returning home and for those across QLD who are attending the games and will need to travel, this day has been declared as a Student Free Day. Term 2 will therefore resume on Tuesday 17 April.

Extreme Weather Conditions Parents and carers are reminded that school will remain open unless otherwise broadcasted on one of the local radio stations or our website. The principal of the school does not have the authority to close the school. This is done by the Regional Director or the Premier. Parents and Carers however, can make decisions about their child/ren’s attendance based on their personal circumstance.

FROM THE DEPUTY’S DESK

The first season of interschool sport, weather permitting, will begin next Friday 09 March, and the information for students will be sent home very soon. All students selected in Netball and Rugby League teams will need to have permission notes and cost (or part-cost) returned to the school office by the due date.

It is also important that the Oonoonba State School Players Code of Conduct form is read, signed and returned by the due date. The Townsville Primary School Sport Code of Conduct is also included for students and parents.

Students who have not returned medical and permission notes, and code of conduct will unfortunately not be able to attend their first round of competition next Friday.

Please contact Mrs Walker (Netball), Mr Williams (Rugby League), or Mr Green HPE if you have any questions about interschool sport.

Music News On Saturday 24th February, 35 teachers from Townsville, Ingham, Ayr and Cairns congregated in the Music Room at Oonoonba State School to attend a full day seminar with Wendy Rolls. The Kodaly Music Education Institute of Australia Townsville Branch (KMEIA) organised this seminar to cover the topics of vocal pedagogy and choral repertoire for Primary and Secondary students to assist the diverse range of Music teachers in North Queensland to effectively teach their students to sing appropriately and to chose appropriate repertoire for them to sing. KMEIA was extremely lucky to secure Wendy Rolls, who is a vocal teacher at the prestigious Clayfield College in Brisbane and who is currently completing her Masters in Vocal Pedagogy. Wendy was extremely knowledgeable about the way the voice works and how to set young singers up to produce the most natural vocal quality. Wendy also gave the participants an opportunity to sing through some wonderful new repertoire by Australian composers. KMEIA would like to thank Oonoonba State School for allowing the use of school facilities for the day. To show their appreciation for the use of the venue, KMEIA has donated two singing storybooks, Lullaby and Goodnight and When I Grow Up to Mrs Gough to use during Music classes. KMEIA hopes that both Mrs Gough and the students of Oonoonba State School enjoy these books for many years to come.
