College Tour Fall 2010 A group of Upward Bound stu- dents enjoyed a day trip to both Loma Linda and Cal Baptist Uni- versities on October 15. UB takes a tour at least once each semester to expose students to various campuses. By see- ing the similarities and dif- ferences between schools, students begin to identify the campus that might be just the right fit for them! Our next trip will be sched- uled sometime in March or April. Details coming soon. O n Saturday, Octo- ber 23, students arrived dressed in their finest attire. Not for a dance or an award cer- emony but for the Up- ward Bound First Annu- al Career Day. The event featured special guest speakers from FIDM (Fashion Institute of Design and Mer- chandising) and pro- fessionals from across the valley. To kick off the event, students learned about profes- sional attire, including what to wear to an in- terview. The present- ers also shared how wearing specific colors conveys certain attrib- utes. Next, a panel of 6 professionals shared their stories of chal- lenge and triumph throughout their ca- reers. Panelists ranged from a Riverside Coun- ty District Attorney, a CPA, a Nursing Super- visor, a Pharmaceuti- cal Sales Rep., a High- way Patrol Officer, and a Registered Nurse. Students reported feel- ing motivated and in- spired by the hard work and dedication of our panelists. A very special “Thank You” to all of our guests for taking time out of their busy schedules. -A newsleer highlighng Upward Bound students and their academic success Student Spotlight Taking Notes: Music Inspires Students W hen she was just 5 years-old watching parades march down the streets of Coachel- la, Ally C. found her passion. The same could be said for Heidi G. as an 8 th grader. Both of these young women are passionate about music and both play in the band at Coachella Valley High School. For Ally, the flute is an amazing instrument and music is like learning another lan- guage--one that is universal. “You could meet people in other countries who don’t speak the same language, but music is the same everywhere”, she says. Ally would like to learn how to play other instruments but for now, as the section leader, she is happy to take on such an important leadership role. H eidi’s passion for music creates a rather interesting situation. Playing tenor drum means she is the only fe- male on the drum line. Having started playing in 8 th grade, Heidi finds that band has a lot to offer. “For me, it’s fun, and I get to learn new things. Band is like one big family. The more experi- enced students are quick to help with anything you need, even outside of band”, Heidi says. In the near future, Heidi will play in her church youth group band as well. M usic is an interest that both Ally and Heidi want to continue throughout their college careers, while possibly providing an opportunity for travel and adventure.
