Brandon Laing matriculated with the class of
2011 and currently studies at Stellenbosch
University in the Western Cape.
It is fascinating that no matter where someone
finds themself or how many years its been, if
their high school years were good to them then
they will most likely always be good to their
high school. Nowhere is this subtle fact more
visible then in an old student society. Ensuring
the successful establishment and operation of
such a society can, nevertheless, be challenging.
Fortunately collective efforts such as the
South African Schools Alumni Association
exist purely to make this process a little
smoother.
Earlier this year I was privileged to attend the
annual seminar which was hosted by Paarl Boys
High in the Western Capes beautiful winelands.
It began with a tour of Paarl Boys Alumni
office and their hall of achievements - a room
dedicated to the past students and their
accomplishments beyond the school walls. It
was truly a unique and clever way to both ac-
knowledge the past as well as give current stu-
dents something to look forward to. The day
ended with a wine tasting and short speeches from
the headmaster of the school as well as the Mayor
of the Paarl area who voiced support for the Asso-
ciation.
The second day of the Seminar was by far the
most informative and worthwhile. It proceeded
with various presentations from major schools
within the cape region in which they discussed
issues relating to finances, structure, fundraising,
ideas for gatherings and general implementation
of alumni associations. Although these presenta-
tions were presented by some of the most wealthy
and established schools in the country, what was
both refreshing and worth mentioning is that all
the ideas they put forward are fairly easy to repli-
cate. The day concluded with an open discus-
sion in which we received a great deal of feedback
and ideas from heads of other societies as well as
many new friends in the alumni community.
I feel that having attended this seminar will yield
impressive results for our own Old Petrians
Alumni Society that will not only increase our ac-
tivity and membership but turn us into a premier
society that will be continue to operate success-
fully for many years. In the months ahead, some
of the ideas brought forward will be implemented
and we are sure you will feel the difference in a
truly St Peters way.
