Foreword

Government announced details of its Automotive Sector

Strategy in July last year, an important landmark that

demonstrated government's recognition of our sector's

importance to the UK economy. We're now over half a

year into the Strategy's roll-out, so hearing from key

players involved in its implementation will be valuable

for everyone attending today's SMMT Open Forum.

With greater political, media and business attention being focused on the automotive sector,

the potential opportunities for players at every level grow. The UK has led automotive's

recovery from recession, with consumers buying more confidently and the bulk of

manufacturers building more products on the back of welcome investment.

To keep pace with growth potential, investment needs to be sustained and most importantly

the UK must attract and grow its skills base. The battle for the best brains is not unique to

the automotive sector, we must compete with every other industry to attract experienced and

graduate workers, upskill our staff and engage apprentices. Today you will hear valuable

insight from SMMT members that are tackling this issue head-on.

SMMT is privileged that its members reflect the diversity of our industry. Backed by the

scope and scale of companies represented, SMMT is able to influence decision making at

the highest levels. The Automotive Council is key to this open dialogue with political decision

makers, so today's update of the Council's activities is sure to be of interest to everyone in

our industry.

SMMT Open Forum magnifies the cross-section of the UK automotive industry, bringing key

issues to the surface and sharing the wealth of experience, enthusiasm and business

potential we have in this country.

The range of engaging and informative exhibitions detailed in this brochure reinforces this,

so I'd urge you to take time to discover more about the products, services and opportunities

available during the breaks.

Whitford

www.whitfordww.com

Some companies develop products in the abstract and then bend

problems to fit the products. Whitford believes that the way to a

better product is to start with a specific problem, and then create a

bonded lubricating coating designed to solve it.

Whitford’s global automotive team works closely with auto

companies and their suppliers to solve the specific problems they

face. The result has been a series of successful vehicle launches.

Whitford works to the ISO/TS 16949 and ISO/TS 14001

Environmental standards.

Auto-flex coatings

Whitford has developed two extensive lines of specialty coatings for

rubber and other flexible substrates: Resilon® (waterborne) and

Xylan® (solvent-borne). They are currently used on more than 100

platforms and over one million cars worldwide.

Anti-friction/corrosion coatings

For almost 50 years, Xylan has been specified by automotive

companies and their tiers. In fact, Xylan was the first coating to

survive the rigours of internal diesel engines when applied to piston

skirts and journal bearings.

Given the extensive range of water-and solvent-borne resins,

coupled with leading solid lubricants such as PTFE, graphite and

molybdenum disulphide, countless components and assemblies are

coated with Xylan to provide lubrication, abrasion resistance, low

friction, corrosion resistance and noise suppression.
