Spelling

Words are discussed and assigned on Monday at the students’ level.

Students are expected to practice their words on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday evenings.

Spelling assessment is on Friday.

Reading

Students often work in small groups, ensuring that we’re able to work with students in a more thorough setting.

Students are grouped by need, therefore receiving the most appropriate instruction. Each student is met at their level. Groups are flexible.

Many readings tie into our Unit of Inquiry.

Reading Homework

Students should read for at least 20-30 minutes each day.

Students may read books that they have chosen from the library, or borrow books from within the classroom.

The students should record their reading in their Reading Response Journal. One page response is due each Friday.

Page 11: Openhouse

Reading

Students should read books within their AR level.

If the text is too difficult, they will not improve as quickly as if they would read books on their level.

If the book is too easy, they will not be challenging themselves.

The most important thing is to foster a love for

reading.

Units of Inquiry

Every six weeks, the students will be focusing on different lines of inquiry. In this first unit, students will investigate and explore the impact of immigration on the world and its people.

The students have already begun to discuss, explore and formulate questions regarding immigration, and what it means to migrate.

The units are cross-curriculum, so students are even discussing the same themes in many of their specialist classes.

Units of Inquiry

Unit 1: Throughout history, human migration has impacted our world.

Unit 2: Media influences our behavior, values and beliefs.

Unit 3: The scientific process helps us to understand how the world works.

Unit 4: Finding peaceful solutions to conflict leads to a better quality of human life.

Unit 5: Taking positive action makes a difference (Exhibition).

Unit 6: Changes occur as we mature and go though life.

Math

Students will focus on number strategies in the beginning of the year, working towards higher-level concepts.

Students will work on assignments that are appropriate for their stage of learning using hands-on approaches as well as practice work in small groups.

Math Homework

A math sheet is given on the first day of the week. The student can chose to complete the sheet any day he or she wishes to, as long as it is turned in on the last day of the week.

On the last day of the week, we go over the answers together. As a class, we then discuss any questions students have about specific problems.

May change based on class work, but overall, we like to have a review of basic skills each week.

Laptop and Computer Use

A computer is a tool in education, much as a calculator is a tool when solving some math problems.

Though we do not have a specific computer class, we do use computers in all areas of study.

We equip students to be knowledgeable users of technology.

Computers can be useful in developing higher order thinking.

Questions

If you have specific questions pertaining to your son or daughter, please feel free to email me or set up a time to meet outside of Open House.

It is fine if you need to send an email in Korean or Japanese. I want to have open communication with all of my student’s parents.
