like Dean Moore DEAN, 25, left school and did a BTEC in automotive engineering, but after completing an access course he is now aspiring to become an archivist.

Dean said “I did a BTEC course because my best friend was doing it, but I didn’t enjoy it. I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do at school and didn’t feel prepared to decide on a career.” After completing his GCSEs at Hartlepool College of Further Education, he decided that he would like to study history at University and embarked on a nine-month Access to Humanities and Social Sciences course.

Dean said “I loved the access course as it was so varied, I learned about so many different things that I wouldn’t have learned about at school, like sociology. There were people of different ages and backgrounds on the course and as the group was small, we all became really close.”

She added: “It’s difficult to balance the work load with my personal responsibilities as a mother but I’ve received support from everyone on the course as a lot of us are in the same boat. Whenever I’ve felt like giving in they’re always there to motivate me to keep going and vice versa, I’m always pushing them to do better.

Sarah concluded “I believe the fact I’m a little older and the experience I’ve had has really helped me to get a leg up on my course and its something I’ve learnt to love. If you’re willing to put the time and effort in the reward is worth it.”

SARAH, 35, from Yarm, was living in Dubai as a teaching assistant, then came back to the UK to earn her teaching qualifications and become a fully fledged teacher. Sarah attended Brierton Comprehensive School and is currently on her second year of a BA (Hons) in Education and Training at Hartlepool College of Further Education.

Sarah moved out to Dubai in 2011 for five years when her husband got a job in the oil and gas industry.

Sarah, said “I moved out to Dubai but really wanted to be able to continue my education to become a teacher. My husband was transferred back to the UK and I used that opportunity to undertake my studies again, because if I were to do it out there, I would have to pay an international fee and it would make the course more expensive.”

Sarah, who has three children aged 13, 8 and 2, feels that although being a parent and studying can be challenging, there’s others who understand and there’s usually a way to work around things.

Dean has completed his first year of a BA (Hons) History Degree at Sunderland University, with the aim of either being a teacher or archivist after graduating.Dean said: “The skills I learned on the access course have really helped me with my degree studies. Both are now both successful career women despite coming out of their schools without the greatest of grades.

But after seeing her mum head back into the classroom at Hartlepool College of Further Education following a succession of low paid jobs, Gabrielle also returned to her studies and is now a qualified science teacher.

The 33-year-old said: “My inspiration to come into education was my mum. Watching her as a mature student gave me that push and showed me that if you put your mind to it you can do it.

“I started at Hartlepool College doing an Access to Science course. I didn’t fully know what I wanted to do. I had nursing and midwifery or something along those lines in my head.

“When I started the course the tutors were absolutely amazing and they went above and beyond and suggested other courses that might interest me, based on what they were reading in the coursework I was handing in. If it wasn’t for them I wouldn’t have gone on to the degree I did.”

Mum Allison is now a successful GP after giving up any thoughts of a career when she became a teenage mum.

Now 51, she explained: “I had my family very young and always worked around them, working mostly part time. I worked as a cleaner, a bar maid and in the crisp factory amongst other things.

“I always worked, but never to my full potential. It was always just to pay the bills and get by. I had aspirations about what I wanted to do but didn’t know how to do it.

“My journey started by going down to the College. And they just sort of spring-boarded me on. I did an Access to Health course and found the tutors so supportive, they would goout of their way for you and even helped me write my UCAS statement.”

Allison went on to Newcastle University where she studied community and hospital medicine before finally graduating as a doctor.

“My advice to other adults about higher education would be to give it a go. The feeling of accomplishment and the doors you can open are amazing. Just go and do it.”
