Course Director : Dr. Bassam A. Abu AmarahContributer : Mr. Saeed ShaltouniCourse Title : Optical Mineralogy.Course Code : 224 Geo.Credit hours: 3 credit hours (2+1+0).
First Semester of theAcademic Year 1431- 1432H (2009 – 2010)
1. General Information:
Course outlines – cont’d
Level/ year the course is offered: 1st semester of the fourth
year . Course pre-requisites: 101 Geo
(course Physical geology). Group Number: 17374. Lecture theater (room) : 1B 54
3
2 . Course objectives:The aim of this course is to study the
optical properties of the rock forming minerals using the polarized light microscope. Students will learn how to identify the rock forming minerals and its characteristics by using the polarized microscope.
4
Course objectives- cont’d:
This Course will develop student's skills in P. M. techniques, and the interaction of light behavior of isotropic and anisotropic minerals, this will be of a great help for the students in their study of igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary rocks.
5
Course objectives- Cont’d:The students will gain the basic
knowledge needed as well as the ability to analyze and to interpret the data by using information of the lectures, reports, assignments and training, and via instrumentations and techniques and will be taught the scientific way of thinking and tackling problems.
6
3 . Course Description:
The 224Geo.– course consists of sixteen wks, 2 lectures a week (30 lectures/semester). 1 practical session (2 hrs. each) =15 hours/
semester, 1 field trip (three days times)/ semester.
7
Course Description – Cont’d Subsequently, the student is expected to achieve
knowledge and applying it in identifying minerals under the polarizing microscope by applying and using their optical properties, and to apply the physical characteristics of each mineral in order to identify the crystallized materials by using polarized light, as well as gaining knowledge in determining silicate minerals and their relationships.

The human eye is sensitive to only a tiny part, the part that is called light. The wavelengths of visible light range from about 350 or 400 nm to about 750 or 800 nm. The term "light" is often extended to adjacent wavelength ranges that the eye cannot detect—to iinfrared radiation, electromagnetic radiation having a wavelength in the range from c.75 × 10−6 cm to c.100,000 × 10−6 cm (0.000075–0.1 cm)......
38
which has a frequency less than that of visible light, and to ultraviolet radiation, invisible electromagnetic radiation between visible violet light and X rays; it ranges in wavelength from about 400 to 4 nanometers and in frequency from about 1015 to 1017 hertz...... and black light, which have a frequency greater than that of visible light.
39
Light wavelengthThe distance between crests of a wave. The
wavelength determines the nature of the various forms of radiant energy that comprise the electromagnetic spectrum. For electromagnetic waves, the wavelength in meters is computed by the speed of light divided by frequency (300,000,000/Hz). For sound waves, the wavelength is determined by 335/Hz. See optical bands.
Length of a Wave The wavelength is the distance between crests. The higher the frequency, the shorter the wavelength.

The Nature of Light:The scientific study of the behavior of light is called
Optics, scientific study of light. Physical optics is concerned with the genesis, nature, and properties of light; physiological optics with the part light plays in vision; and geometrical optics with the reflection and refraction of light as encountered in the study ofreflection, return of a wave from a surface that it strikes into the medium through which it has traveled. The general principles governing the reflection of light and sound are similar, for both normally travel in straight lines and both are wave phenomena......
42
light by a mirror, in optics, a reflecting surface that forms an image of an object when light rays coming from that object fall upon it (see reflection). Usually mirrors are made of plate glass, one side of which is coated with metal or some special preparation to serve as an object...... object, refraction, in physics, deflection of a wave on passing obliquely from one transparent medium into a second medium in which its speed is different, as the passage of a light ray from air into glass.
43
lens, device for forming an image of an object by the refraction of light. In its simplest form it is a disk of transparent substance, commonly glass, with its two surfaces curved or with one surface plane and the other curved...... Or prism, in optics, a piece of translucent glass or crystal used to form a spectrum of light separated according to colors. Its cross section is usually triangular....., diffraction of light as it passes by the edge of an opaque object, and
44
interference, in physics, the effect produced by the combination or superposition of two systems of Waves, in which these waves reinforce, neutralize, or in other ways interfere with each other.polarization of light, orientation of the vibration pattern of light waves in a singular plane. Characteristics of Polarization
Polarization is a phenomenon peculiar to transverse waves, i.e.
