Definitions:

Numerical Expression – Is a mathematical phrase that includes only numbers and operations.

Examples: 4 + 8 ÷ 2 and 25 + 2

Simplify – Refers to the process of finding the value of numerical/algebraic expressions or writing a fraction in simplest form.

Order of Operations – Is the set of rules that mathematicians have agreed on to simplify numerical expressions that involve more than one operation.

1.) Simplify any expressions inside grouping symbols (parentheses and brackets).

2.) Evaluate any numbers with exponents.

3.) Multiply or divide from left to right.

4.) Add or subtract from left to right.

Simplify Expressions with the Order of Operations

Example 1:9 + 12 x 2

9 + 12 x 29 + 2433

Multiply the 12 and the 2.

Add the 9 and the 24.

Final answer

Simplify Expressions with the Order of Operations

Example 2:7 + (12 x 3) ÷ 6 + 4

7 + (12 x 3) ÷ 6 + 47 + 36 ÷ 6 + 47 + 6 + 413 + 417

Divide the 36 and the 6.

Add the 7 and the 6.

Multiply the 12 and the 3.

Add 13 and 4.

Final answer

Simplify Expressions with the Order of Operations

Example 3:33 + 8 - 16÷ 4

33 + 8 – 16÷ 427 + 8 – 16÷ 427 + 8 – 435 – 431

Raise 3 to the 3rd power.

Add the 27 and the 8.

Final answer

Subtract the 4 from 35.

Divide 16 by 4.

Simplify Expressions with the Order of Operations

Try these:1.) 28 – 63 7 = 2.) 6 + 9 ÷ (5 – 2)

3.) 5 x [36 – (13 + 9)] = 4.) 8 ÷ (1 + 3) x 52 – 2 =

Adding Parentheses

Add one set of parentheses so that each math statement is correct.

1.) 12 + 16 ÷ 4 = 7 2.) 50 ÷ 2 + 3 – 7 = 3
