Welcome back Tony. The meeting was called to order by President
Tony and continued with a song led by Hugh Midyette, followed
by the Pledge of Allegiance led by George Steenson, the reciting
of the four way test led by Sam Myers, and the invocation by
President Tony. Visitors John and Jane Capps, Cathy Santore, and
Ken Belangia were recognized and welcomed. Following the
buffet, the program was presented by guest Rotarian, John
Capps, who made a big splash. He shared his personal Oriental
Village and Oriental Rotary Club history, and is currently an
inspirational/ motivational speaker, a Rotarian “at large.” He holds
many community and Rotary awards. His fast-paced, humorous,
yet quite serious presentation included an up-front and center
recognition/installation of all Oriental Rotary members who qualify
for the “Bald Headed Men of America Club,” of which he is
founder. He demonstrated a literal “power point presentation,”
gave detailed personal experience with the Rotary polio
eradication program, shared a poster of Mother Theresa,
demonstrated the value of a vial of polio vaccine (and how 195
million were vaccinated on a weekend train through India, and
how there is hope for the eradication of polio in 3-4 years), shared
the 3 cent polio postage stamp, presented the work on water
wells, and concluded with the work providing artificial legs made
from PVC pipe. He sincerely thanked the Oriental Rotary Club for
what it has done for others and told how he has represented this
club in his overseas visits. He shared a personal copy of the Four
Way Test he received years ago in Oriental.
THE LIGHTER SIDE SNAIL’S PACE
On a visit to a French restaurant,
the novelist Irwin Shaw waited a
long time for service. When finally
the maître d’ arrived at his table,
Shaw was told that snails were
the specialty of the house. “I
know,” came Shaw’s
exasperated reply. “You’ve got
them dressed as waiters.”
It’s LOGICAL: VACATION
Three couples are going away on
vacation. Alan, Bill, and Charles
are the husbands. Andrea, Beth,
and Carol are the wives. Each
couple is going to a different
country, with Austria, Bermuda,
and China the places to be
visited.
Each combination of husband,
wife, and country includes a
name beginning with an A, a
name beginning with a B, and a
name beginning with a C. Carol
is not married to Bill.
Can You match the couples and
decide where they will be taking
their vacation?
(Answer in next issue.)

IN THE COMMUNITY
White Sulphur Springs, WV flooding there has been utterly devastating. Hundreds of homes and businesses
are swept away or destroyed. The PGA Tour and the Greenbrier resort were forced to cancel the
Greenbrier Classic Tournament. This is a double hit, since they’ll also miss out on the annual economic surge
the tournament provides for this small town. The White Sulphur Springs club is going to need help to reach
out to their community. This is an opportunity for Rotarians to step up and help fellow Rotarians and others in
desperate need. District 7550 has established a Flood Relief Fund. Funds are flowing through the Lewisburg
Rotary Club Foundation. This Foundation is a 501(c)(3) entity, therefore, these contributions are fully tax
deductible. DG John Powell said, “This is an unprecedented event in our District. Our goal is to enable the
local clubs and the Rotarians in our District to respond to this event and truly exemplify Rotary Serving
Humanity. Checks can be made payable to the Lewisburg Rotary Club Foundation and mailed to John
Powell, District Governor, 2526 Spring Street, Charleston, WV 25303-2501. Please designate the funds for
flood relief. Questions may be directed to DG John Powell at [email protected] or (540) 550-5533.
POEM OF THE MONTH:
Trees
To be a giant and keep quiet about it,
To stay in one's own place;
To stand for the constant presence of process
And always to seem the same;
To be steady as a rock and always trembling,
Having the hard appearance of death
With the soft, fluent nature of growth,
One's Being deceptively armored,
One's Becoming deceptively vulnerable,
To be so tough, and take the light so well,
Freely providing forbidden knowledge
Of so many things about heaven and earth
For which we should otherwise have no word--
Poems or people are rarely so lovely,
And even when they have great qualities
They tend to tell you rather than exemplify
What they believe themselves to be about,
While from the moving silence of trees,
Whether in storm or calm, in leaf and naked,
Night or day, we draw conclusions of our own,
Sustaining and unnoticed as our breath,
And perilous also--though there has never been
A critical tree--about the nature of things.
By Howard Nemerov, from “The Selected Poems of Howard Nemerov,” Swallow Press/Ohio
University Press, 2003, p.26.
