March 20, 2017 MEETING SUMMARY
The meeting was called to order by President Tony Santore. Song
leader, Jim Berry, led the Club in singing the “When Irish Eyes are
Smiling.” The Pledge of Allegiance followed, led by Pappy Khouri; the
Four Way Test led by Charles Skinner; and a thoughtful invocation led
by President Tony. Evening Program Host, Jim Ragan, introduced
HeartWorks presenters, Katherine Hudson and Rod Lee, who along
with the tent team, led the chow line. Post dinner President Tony then
recognized Jack Mason, who told a story about his wife leaving her
purse in a restaurant, going back and finding it still there, but without
her wallet. However, said wallet showed up as a package delivery just
today, less $12 cash but with all credit cards and ID materials, just as
he was about to cancel the last credit card. Good story, Jack.
Jim Ragan then presented
Katherine Hudson and Rod Lee
from HeartWorks. Mr. Lee began
by thanking this Rotary Club for all
its support to HeartWorks, shared a
brief biography, integrated with
the origin of HeartWorks and how
his wife, Dr. Sue Lee, saw things
and needs in Pamlico County she
had never seen before and then
they started HeartWorks. The county had
one social worker, prompting them to
seek and receive a grant, providing a
LCSW in each school in the county. He
described each of the four primary
programs of HeartWorks: 1) Still Waters to
help traumatized children; 2) The free
after school program, funded by a
federal grant, from 3-6 pm each school
day, serving 150 children and with a
waiting list; 3) The seven week summer
program from 7am-6pm five days a
week and partnering with Camp Don
Lee for activities, including swimming
after learning that 80% of county children
did not know how to swim; and 4) Safe
Start, a developmental day care
program for up to 20 children. The Lees’
and all the HeartWorks staff seek to “love
the children to wellness.”
Katherine Hudson, Director of Volunteers, also thanked this Rotary Club for all its support, listing the
fence around the septic area, covers over playground areas, painted parking lot lines, and the
ongoing need for math tutors. Ms. Hudson stated that over 400 children are served each year at
HeartWorks. She shared a thank you poster from some of the children at HeartWorks.

Meeting Summary continued)
Rod and Katherine, thanks for your fine presentation, and for all you, all the staff, and all the
volunteers at HeartWorks do for Pamlico County.
Paul Olson then presented a brief video about the upcoming District Conference at Atlantic
Beach Doubletree Hilton, April 28-29, inviting attendance by Club members. President Tony
confirmed with Larry Gracie that the deadline for CARTS is April 30 and reminded the Club that the
next program is presented by Elizabeth Hudson, Editor, “Our State” magazine.

An online obituary in which a family described the deceased as a selfish,
“abusive” man whose life served no “obvious purpose” recently went viral. If an

A MESSAGE FROM SALLY BELANGIA--SUBJECT: VOLUNTEERS
Good Morning,
As we start gearing up in earnest for Cycle NC April 27-30, I’d like to ask for assistance in spreading the word to
gather volunteers. We really don’t need much. The coordinating committee has been working hard with Ragan
Williams to make things happen and have been very successful. Participation from everyday citizens is limited to this
one request and just generally remembering that Tourism is a big deal for us. We have always been noted for our
gracious hospitality. I receive those emails and notes regularly about how helpful everyone is to our visitors.
In addition to just “being Oriental” I need to ask for 33 citizens (locals with the “inside scoop”) to man information
tent at Lou Mac Park in shifts to simply answer questions and point folks to the places they are looking for and the
resources they need. We’ll have tables full of information to give out, but we need YOU, the citizens, to be able to
tell folks about the genre of music at “X”, the best seafood (in your humble opinion), where to get great burgers,
where I can find someone to sell me a doohickey to fix this on my bike handle, where to find the next dose of
Claritin, where to replace the shorts I just split open, where to rent a kayak for the afternoon, etc.
We’ll gather the materials, erect the tent, and provide your material, I need to leverage your knowledge of the area
to help our guests get to what they need.
The shifts: Red numbers indicate reduced need due to signups!
Thursday, April 27-
10AM-2PM (2), 2PM-6PM (2)
Friday, April 28-
7AM-11AM (2), 11AM-2PM (3), 2PM-5PM (4)
Saturday, April 29-
8AM-12PM (3), 12PM-3PM (2), 2:30-5:30PM (3)
Sunday, April 30-
8AM-12 PM (2), 12PM-3PM (2)
Email me if you are interested in a shift, and when you want it along with a phone number for you.
Bring a book and a lawn chair, enjoy Lou Mac Park! Numbers in parenthesis is how many folks we need at each
shift. Of course, if there is no demand, we can certainly go down to the numbers needed, but the early end is truly
important to this event being successful.
I’ll be contacting businesses and services for gathering that information to be disseminated. Instead of giving bags,
we’ll just have this one dissemination point for those who want to pick and choose what they’d like to do. If you are
a committee chair, please forward to your committee. Feel free to forward to those who may be interested in
assisting, and also to anyone who may be interested in giving their information brochures, special flyers, etc. to the
event for distribution.
We’ll be gathering from this point forward. Please remember that we will have 1400-1500 participants- send enough
to give to a majority of participants. Previously, those giving information were required to give 1500 of each. Maybe
not EACH participant will be interested, but a majority will. We ask that information be given in a bundle of
1000. The more people walk through your door, the better your business will be that weekend. Please consider
specials for the weekend, especially for participants in the ride.
Talked to Tom yesterday and his entire condotel was booked within a half hour of announcement of the event. This
is a huge opportunity for us to shine. Help us help you to be successful that weekend.
As usual, any questions, please just email me directly,
Thanks for all you do,
D.
