“Our Father.” For example, in the 12th century, to help the uneducated better participate in the liturgy, the recitation of 150 Our Fathers served as a substitute for the 150 Psalms, and became known as “the poor man’s breviary.”

T he structure of the rosary gradually evolved between the 12th and 15th centuries. Eventually 50 Hail Marys (or more) were recited and were linked with verses of psalms or other phrases evoking “the joys of Mary,” i.e. scenes in the lives of Jesus and Mary. In 1409 Dominic of Prussia, a Carthusian monk, popularized the practice setting 50 phrases about the lives of Jesus and Mary with 50 Hail Marys. During this time, this prayer form became known as the rosarium (“rose garden”), actually a common term used to designate a collection of similar material, such as an anthology of stories on the same subject or theme. Eventually, “the sorrows of Mary” and “the heavenly joys” were distinguished, bringing the number of Hail Marys to 150. Eventually, the 150 Hail Marys were joined to the 150 Our Fathers, a Hail Mary following each Our Father.

I n the early 15th century, Henry Kalkar (d. 1408), another Carthusian, divided the 150 Hail Marys into groups of 10, with each group marked by an Our Father. By the 16th century, the structure of the five-decade rosary was based on the three sets of mysteries — joyful (Annunciation, Visitation, Nativity, Presentation and Finding in the Temple), sorrowful (Agony in the Garden, Scourging, Crowning with Thorns, Carrying of the Cross and Death) and glorious (Resurrection, Ascension, Pentecost, Assumption and Coronation). In 2002, our beloved late Holy Father, Pope John Paul II, instituted the luminous mysteries: Baptism at the Jordan, Wedding Feast of Cana, Proclamation of the Kingdom of God, Transfiguration and Institution of the holy Eucharist. Also, after the apparitions of Our Lady at Fatima in 1917, the prayer Mary taught to the children has generally been added at the end of each decade: “O my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell. Lead all souls to heaven, especially those in greatest need of Thy mercy.”

T radition does hold that St. Dominic (d. 1221) devised the rosary as we know it. Moved by a vision of our Blessed Mother, he preached the use of the rosary in his missionary work among the Albigensians, a group of fanatical heretics. The Albigensians, named after the town of Albi in southern France where they lived, believed that everything material was evil and everything spiritual was good. For this reason, they denied the incarnation of our Lord; for them, Jesus the true God becoming also true man and accepting our human nature was simply unthinkable. Following this teaching, each person’s soul was imprisoned in the evil body. Therefore, they abstained from marital love, because no one should imprison another soul in a body. Their greatest act of religion was called “the endura,” an act of suicide which freed the soul from the body. They also fought against any authority that represented a kingdom of this world, assassinating royal and Church officials alike. The Church condemned these heretics, and St. Dominic tried to convert them through reasonable preaching and genuine Christian love. Unfortunately, royal authority was less compassionate. (Just as an aside, a travel show televised a program on southern France, and visited the town of Albi, noting that these people were “persecuted by the Church”; the narrator failed to report that these people were suicidal heretics whose teachings jeopardized the souls of the faithful.) Nevertheless, St. Dominic used the rosary as a useful instrument to convert the Albigensians.

Some scholars take exception to St. Dominic’s actual role in forming the rosary since the earliest accounts of his life do not mention it, the Dominican constitutions do not link him with it, and contemporaneous paintings of St. Dominic do not include it as a symbol to identify the saint. In 1922, Dom Louis Gougaud stated, “The various elements which enter into the composition of that Catholic devotion commonly called the rosary are the product of a long and gradual development which began before St. Dominic’s time, which continued without his having any share in it, and which only attained its final shape several centuries after his death.” However, other scholars would argue that St. Dominic not so much “invented” the rosary as he preached its use to convert sinners and those who had strayed from the Faith. Moreover, at least a dozen popes have mentioned St. Dominic’s connection with the rosary in various papal pronouncements, sanctioning his role as at least a “pious belief.” The first such mention was made by Pope Alexander VI in 1495.

HOW TO PRAYTHE ROSARY

Each succeeding decade is prayed in a similar manner by recalling the appropriate mystery, reciting the Our Father, then Hail Marys, the Glory Be to the Father, and the Fatima Prayer while reflecting on the mystery.

When the fifth mystery is completed, the Rosary is completed, the Rosary is customarily concluded with the Hail Queen and the Sign of the Cross.

• Hold the crucifix, make the Sign of the Cross and then recite the Apostles’ Creed.

• Recite the Our Father on the first large bead.

• Recite a Hail Mary for an increase of faith, hope and charity on each of the three small beads.

• Recite the Glory Be to the Father and the Fatima Prayer on the chain/cord.

• Recall the first Rosary Mystery and recite the Our Father on the large bead.

• On each of the adjacent ten small beads (also referred to as a decade, recite a Hail Mary while reflecting on the mystery.

• On the chain/cord, recite the Glory Be to the Fatima and the Fatima Prayer.

Having an accurate database of our parishioners will help us know where and how we need to grow. Thank you to everyone who registered with our Parish. If you have not received a welcome letter, please call the Parish Office to confirm your registration. All new parishioners, and those interested in registering in our Parish, are invited to attend The New Parishioner Orientation on Sunday, November 11th, 2018 at 12:30pm.This is your opportunity to become informed and active members of the Parish and participate in our various ministries. Registering at St. John XXIII is a declaration of your desire to be part of a Catholic community. Please let the parish office know your email address OR you can even update it on the Parish website! www.johnxxiii.net Frequently, those seeking to celebrate Marriage, Baptisms or serve as sponsors for Confirmation or Baptism request a letter stating that they are parishioners. To receive such a letter, one must be registered in the parish, attend Mass regularly, and be committed to stewardship of time, talent and treasure. One means of verifying participation is through the use of parish offertory envelopes. If you choose not to participate in the support of the parish or are unable to contribute at this time, please at least note your prayerful support on your envelope and place it in the weekly offertory basket.

THIS WEEK IN FAITH FORMATION:On Sunday September 23rd we will have a kick off Mass for Faith Formation at 11:15am followed by a family orientation for those who are new to the Faith Formation program. The meeting will take place in the community room and will last approximately an hour. Faith Formation first day of class will be Wednesday September 26th.CHILDREN’S LITURGY OF THE WORD is a program for children ages 4 to 10 that takes place each Sunday during the 9:15am & 11:15am Masses. After the opening prayer, the children along with their Catechist move to the chapel to hear and discuss the Sunday readings at a level they will understand. At the offertory, the children return to the assembly for the remainder of the Mass. There is no registration required for Children’s Liturgy of the Word. While we want this to be a fun and engaging experience for the children, they are expected to behave in an appropriate manner, respectful to adults and to God’s House. Please talk to your child about this before having them attend Children’s Liturgy of the Word. Because this is a guided lesson, we ask that children younger than age 4 do not attend. If you would like more information, or to be a part of this program, please contact Chris Biel at 561-7499 or email [email protected] POLICIES FOR SACRAMENT PREPARATION:BAPTISM: Congratulations on your decision to baptize your child! At St. John XXIII we are happy to help your family prepare for the celebration. Contact the office at (239) 561-2245 for more information or to begin the process.FIRST COMMUNION: (also called First Eucharist and First Reconciliation) Children in First grade or above, who have expressed a desire and willingness and are attending Mass, are welcome to begin the two year process of preparing for these Sacraments. The first year consists of regular attendance at Faith Formation classes or through a Diocesan Catholic school. Have you received the Sacrament of Confirmation?Just as bodies and minds grow, Catholics believe that the soul also needs to grow in the life of grace. The Sacrament of Confirmation builds on the sacraments of Baptism, Reconciliation and Holy Communion, completing the process of initiation into the Catholic community.

Thinking about joining the Catholic Church, but feel a little lost? The RCIA inquiry stage is the starting place for adults who are thinking about entering the Catholic Church.“Be still, and know that I am God.” — Psalm 46:10In the inquiry stage, you’re just finding out about Jesus, Christianity, and the Catholic Church. Talk to people, walk around in our shoes for a bit and get a feel for the place. As an inquirer, you’re not yet sure exactly what you think about the Catholic Church. Your main task here is to develop your faith a little bit, get to know Christ, prayer, the Catholic Church, and how Christians live. That’s the only way you can make an informed decision about entering the Catholic Church.

CARING ABOUT RESIDENTS

i n Le eCoun t yThe organization Builders Care, really does care about Lee County residents. As a volunteer working with a local church, we often run into problems that seem too difficult to fix. We were working with a family unable to safely leave their home due to stair issues. They had many medical conditions that required them to leave their house. Price quotes for ramps ran into thousands of dollars that was just not available. I contacted Lee Builders Care, and they assessed the situation and decided they could help. They can provide emergency construction services at no cost to needy and deserving elderly and disabled homeowners who cannot obtain repairs through traditional means. Local member contractors give donated services and materials to help our neighbors in need. This assistance was provided to the wife of a deceased veteran. I want to thank them for making her life so much safer as she can be wheeled out of her home safely now. An answered prayer. Sincerely,Helen Tuffy - Parish Nurse

ADORATIONCORNER

“Jesus waits for us in this Sacrament of Love, Let us be generous with our time

in going to meet Him in Adoration. May our adoration never cease.”

- St. John Paul II

Thank You

In anticipation of the opening of the Adoration Chapel, please consider becoming an Adorer.A visitor to the chapel is called an “Adorer” because we come to adore the Lord Jesus in His Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity. Adoration is an intimate experience in which the Lord and Adorer gaze at one another in love.

BECOME A COMMITTED ADORERWhat is a Committed Adorer? An individual who commits to a specific hour (1-hour) of each week to adore Jesus exposed in the Blessed Sacrament at our Adoration Chapel. What is expected of me if I wish to be an Adorer?Arrive at your scheduled time and remain present in the chapel until the next person arrives one hour later.Find a substitute Adorer in the event you are not able to be there. This will be a simple process through our electronic scheduling program.

BECOME A SUBSTITUTE ADORERWhat is a Substitute Adorer? An Individual who makes themselves available to be a substitute for another Adorer. What is Expected of me if I wish to be a Substitute Adorer?Be available to cover occasional hours of Adoration for another Adorer, when requested. You may state which days and hours work best for you. You will do this through a simple process on our “electronic scheduling software” program.

What are the Fruits of Eucharistic Adoration?People who observe Eucharistic adoration experience a deeper devotion to Jesus, and this manifests itself in countless ways. The primary fruits are repentance and conversion which lead to increased charity - that is, the love of Christ alive in his people. The adoration of Jesus in the Eucharist also leads to greater reverence at Mass, a deeper desire for personal holiness, and a stronger sense of union with the parish and the whole Church.

We would like to extend a special thank you to Rebecca Leslie, for dedicating her time in assisting Fr. Lawrence with the Altar Server schedule over the past year and welcome our newest volunteers, Monica Nelson and Tony Dacosta. We appreciate their time and effort in learning and implementing the new ministry scheduling software moving forward. We are very blessed to have such a wonderful team of dedicated volunteers.

"Do things for people not because ofwho they are or what they do in return,

but because of who you are."- SAINT TERESA

Thank YouWe would like to thank all of the volunteers who donated their time to help with the fall raffle. Thank you for your dedication and commitment to our Parish family!

Rosa r y COAST TO COAST

OCTOBER 7, 2018Many of the countries which inspired the European Rosary Coast to Coast are joining with the US to hold Rosary Rallies across the world, October 7th, traditionally the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary. The formation of the New Holy League of Nations declares a united front in worldwide spiritual battle, defending the Dignity of the Human person–Life, Marriage, Family, as well as Religious Liberty. This “declaration of war” is “not against flesh and blood; but against principalities and power, against the rulers of the world of this darkness, against the spirits of wickedness in the high places.” (Ephesians 6:12). Together we are calling upon God, through the powerful intercession of Our Lady of the Rosary, to heal our countries and return them to Holiness. After the Rosary on the Coasts event took place in the British Isles (April 29, 2018), Bishop John Keenan of Paisley, Scotland reflected: “I left thinking…there was something changed in the Catholic Church, in the British Isles…it was as though Catholics are beginning to get the sense, the inspiration that all the problems of the world really can be solved by prayer. It was like a day of New Evangelization. It felt like a day of Grace for us. Therefore, I commend it to the Catholics in the United States.”Joining the United States are Poland, the British Isles, Ireland, Canada, Australia, Lebanon, India, Mexico, Panama and other countries in Central America and South America – with more expected to join in the weeks to come. Each member nation is encouraged, in addition, to take part in the 54-day Rosary Novena, beginning August 15 (Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary) – for the intentions of reparation and petition for their Countries. Each country involved will be represented on New Holy League of Nations.Already, over 400 events have been registered across the United States, with event planners organizing processions, pilgrimages, and full parish engagement. The US Novena for Our Nation will begin August 15th. Individuals are encouraged to sign up for daily reminders and reflections. Cardinal Raymond Burke has stated: “Let us now turn to the powerful prayer of the Holy Rosary, asking Mary Immaculate to intercede with Our Lord to bring healing to our nation and to inspire in her citizens the holiness of life which alone can transform our nation.

CITY OF FORT MYERS PIER• 6-9pm Walk Festival • 7pm Walk Begins

On the Youth Mission Trip this year, we learned about The 177 Project. Teens that have gone to Catholic Heart Work Camp come away with so much but what is most impressive to them is the Eucharistic Adoration night the music the meditation and being Present with Jesus, they come away saying that was one of the most powerful moments and for some it has been the first time they have gone to Adoration. This year they left behind their Intentions written down for others to pray for in the Million Intentions Campaign. We would like to invite you to experience what they have, make this Your Mission to come October 14th to partake in Adoration across the nation. This fall, the 177 Project is bringing an evening of Eucharistic Adoration and music to every single diocese in the United States. Between Labor Day and Christmas, 22 different artists will help put on almost 200 evenings of Adoration across the entire country. On October 14th the will be hosting an evening at St. John XXIII and we would love for you to join us! Tickets to the evening are completely free and you can get yours on line at the177project.com or contact Beth or Kelly in our Youth Ministry Office. It will begin with the Rosary at 6:45pm followed by Eucharistic Adoration at 7:00pm and concluding with a Concert at 8:15pm. The contemporary music is Awesome. Please bring the whole family. One of the biggest things that we want to do besides getting people to spend time in front of the Eucharist and helping to cultivate support for contemporary Catholic music is just to get people praying for each other. Can you imagine what a difference we could make in the world if people would just consistently pray for one another - especially in front of the Eucharist? To encourage that, we’ve launched the Million Intentions Campaign! The concept is simple. We’re collecting prayer requests and, during each and every Holy Hour of the 177 Project, we’re going to spend 10 minutes just praying for other people around the country. We will literally be a nation praying for a nation in the presence of Christ! Our hope, over the fall, is to pray for a million different, specific intentions during this time and we could use your help. If you’re interested in volunteering when the 177 Project comes to St.. John XXIII, Beth Benham is our volunteer coordinator and will be in touch with you from there. And don’t worry, we close up shop during Eucharistic Adoration so you won’t miss a single second with Jesus!
