For Siemens, a global pioneer in the fields of industry, energy and healthcare, breast cancer support is personal. Not only does the company develop solutions to aid in the detection, diagnosis, and treatment of breast cancer, they are an official ACS National Partner. For years, Siemens employee participation and support of multiple Making Strides events across the country has grown because cancer has affected so many of their employees and their families. When MSABC started in Orlando, 20 years ago, Siemens was there.
One of their own, Mary Lee McBride, a financial analyst and breast cancer survivor, brought Siemens in to participate at the first Orlando Strides, in 1996. She began with a group of 10 walkers and then pushed hard, year after year, to keep Siemens involved. Her initial efforts at fundraising were very grassroots. For years, you could go to a local ice cream shop, near the Siemens’ campus, and find Mary Lee and her family scooping ice cream behind the counter, at an annual donation event. Since then, participation has grown exponentially, though Siemens never lost sight of their grassroots traditions.
Today, 60+ volunteers start planning in April. Siemens Orlando kicks off fundraising around Administrative Professional’s Day when employees’ recognize assistants with pink carnations, with all proceeds going to MSABC. Multiple giving events occur over the following months culminating in Jeans Friday, where employees pay $5 to wear jeans to work the day before the walk. Larger events include a Siemens’ golf league which donates a lucrative amount from auctions at their half and end of season fetes. This inspired an additional, private golf event to become an annual contributor.
Other Siemens’ sports leagues have annual Pink Out nights for softball, basketball and soccer where volunteers pass pink buckets for spare change. Those pink buckets re-appear
for half of September and all of October, placed at cafeteria registers. Employees dropping in their lunch change alone raised over $1000. The local “Queen of Cupcakes — Sweets by Holly” donates 50% of pre-order dollars back to Siemens for their annual bake sale. Then there are the coveted Breast Cancer Bears, a status symbol that generous employee donors proudly display on their desks year round.
Siemens Orlando has raised nearly $500,000 and is the only sponsor
to have participated in all 19 previous walks.
Weekly update emails from Christina Roberts, Siemens Orlando Team Leader, sparks giving throughout the months by keeping Siemens unofficially official office-to-office competition alive. 50,000 Siemens employees in 18 cities participate annually. Orlando has the largest participation by team and donation size and they intend to keep it that way! Siemens Orlando has raised nearly $500,000 and are the only sponsor to have participated in all 19 previous walks.
Siemens is committed to supporting all employees who are inspired to make a difference in their communities by volunteering their time, money and skills to help change the world where they live and work. Their corporate leaders have been to walks in 6 cities — this last year participating in Orlando. Their hearts were touched as they were overwhelmed by the efforts and turnout of the Siemens team and the scope and scale of the overall event. They plan to return to #OrlandoStrides annually.

We’re determined to make this breast cancer’s last century. Passion drives us to walk in and raise money for the Making Strides program. Passion for those we wish we could have back in our lives, for those fighting the disease today, and for a tomorrow without breast cancer.
Making Strides walks gives us power to make a real difference in the battle to end breast cancer. Because silence won’t finish this fight action will. Not only are you helping those who are currently fighting the disease, you’re helping everyone who hopes to never hear the words “You have breast cancer.”
When you walk and raise money for the Making Strides program, you join more than one million volunteers across the country whose common purpose is to beat this disease. Together, we can finish the fight against breast cancer.
