Welcome to the March issue of the Ossett & Horbury Review. Spring issupposedly just around the corner, so let’s hope the arctic weather islong behind us. Don’t forget to keep your Ossett & Horbury Reviewhandy - it’s full of local tradesmen and businesses to turn to inemergencies, such as the many burst pipes suffered during the recentcold snap.

In this month’s issue, page 6 features the new book by local authorRichard Bell, which was launched to coincide with this years RhubarbFestival in Wakefield. And to keep in the Rhubarb mood, our Food &Drink page has a couple of Rhubarb recipes for you.

We are also looking at a couple of new businesses in Ossett - Lilly Luon Station Road is a Dress Agency, helping to beat the Credit Crunch byoffering nearly-new quality clothing and designer labels and Pudpot, the Yorkshire Pudding Parlour, has relocated from Horbury to premisesin the Ossett Town Football Club grounds, opposite the bus station.

Don’t forget to take a look at the Diary page to see what’s happeninglocally and if you know of a local event, please send in the details. We’ll do our best to include it in the next issue.

Books...Books...Books...Local author Richard Bell has a new book of nine walks, all of

which are in the rhubarb triangle with a number of rhubarb

recipes.

Launched at this year's February Rhubarb Festival in

Wakefield, “Walks in the Rhubarb Triangle” contains nine local

walks, al illustrated in colour along with several family favourite

rhubarb recipes from Richard’s wife.

Richard states: “I first heard about the rhubarb triangle when I

was a student so I included rhubarb in my first book, A Natural

History of Wakefield, in 1978.

“My new book is different to the others I’ve written as it is very

colourful and includes picture maps and points of interest in

pen and ink and watercolours. It also includes delicious

recipes from my wife Barbara for rhubarb bread and butter

pudding, rhubarb cheesecake and rhubarb triangles, which are

a type of flapjack.

Available from Rickaro

Books in Horbury, “Walks in

the Rhubarb Triangle” is

priced at a bargain £2.99.

Lesley Mallows from Ossett, hashad only one job previous to workingat The Curtain Shop. Her speciality isthe hand sewing, cornering andfinishing that helps to give The CurtainShop curtains the quality finish forwhich they have become renown.

Jane Kirk, from Outwood, is arelative newbie at The Curtain Shop, having worked there for 3 years, butshe has always sewn, both as a joband as a hobby for herself and herfamily. Roman Blinds and eyeletsare Jane’s speciality within the team.

The ladies work together as a team, preparing and producing curtains and blinds for The Curtain Shop. Everythingis done in-house, which means that quality is closely controlled and maintained and although there is a certainamount of humour and banter throughout the day, the machines rarely stop and the ladies give a real sense of‘getting down to business’’, showing an obvious pride in the work that comes out of The Curtain Shop sewing room.

The ladies responsible for the production of The Curtain Shop curtains and blinds(L-R: Elizabeth Morris, Christine Jackson, Jayne Kirk, Mary Hackett, Lesley Mallows)

ElizabethMorris has asewing backgroundthat includes sewingcanvas and tents forMitchells in HorburyBridge. FromHorbury, Elizabethhas worked as partof the close knitCurtain Shop teamfor five years andtakes care of manyof the pinch pleats, box pleats andvalance work.

Mary Hackett fromFlanshaw has been with theteam for four years. Amazinglythis is only her third positionsince leaving school. Togetherwith Elizabeth, she undertakesmuch of the make up andtaping of the curtains.

Christine Jackson is the Sewing RoomSupervisor and has lived in Ossett for the last 20years. Having sewed locally for various firms, including Nettletons, she moved to the TheCurtain Shop five years ago where she overseesthe make up of curtains and blinds for both theOssett and Normanton shops.

It’s everything rhubarb this month! Let us know if you have a favourite rhubarb recipe Email: [email protected]

Rhubarb(Rheumrhabarbarum)is botanically speaking a vegetable but most often treatedas a fruit. It is almost unbearably tart on it’s own, andgenerally needs the sweetness fo sugar, honey or fruitjuice added to balance the acidity. It’s kind of vegetableyou either love or hate - nothing in-between. With anearthy, sour taste, the succulent stems are used in saucesand pies, and can be eaten raw or stewed in desserts.Rhubarb is a good source of fibre and contains moderatelevels of vitamin C and calcium. It is also low in sodiumand contains dietary fibre. Studies have linked the fibrefrom rhubarb in the diet with reduced cholesterol levels.

Perfect Poached RhubarbSlowing poaching rhubarb in the oven keeps the pieceswhole rather than ending up with a mushy pulp

1lb/450g rhubarb 4oz/110g caster sugar

Preheat the oven to 325F/160C/gas mark 3. Trim the rhubarb, wash the stems, dry and cut into shortlengths. Arrange in a single layer in a roasting tin.Sprinkle over the sugar and cover with a lid or foil. Bake for fifteen minutes and remove from the oven. Therhubarb should still be slightly “al dente” but if it is still tohard, return to the oven for another 5 -10 minutes.Leave until cool, still covered, until the rhubarb isdeliciously soft with lots of syrup. Serve with custard, cream or Greek yoghurt and lemonshortcake or ginger biscuits.

Rhubarb Fool with Rhubarb Sauce

Cook the rhubarb in a pan with the sugar, lemon juice and vanillapod for about 4-5 minutes, or until the rhubarb is softened and thick.Cool completely and then remove the vanilla pod.Line six large 300ml capacity dishes or glasses with cling film andthen line the sides of the prepared dishes with sponge fingers.Fold together the whipped cream, custard and cooled rhubarb. Spooninto the dishes tapping the mixture down. Cover with cling film.Chill for several hours, or overnight if possible. To make the sauce, gently cook the rhubarb with the sugar and100ml of water until the rhubarb is soft and slightly stringy. Puree ina blender, and then push the mixture through a fine sieve.Add a squeeze of lemon juice and adjust the sweetening to taste, adding a little more sugar if necessary. Gently pull the cling film andturn the fools out. Serve with the rhubarb sauce.

18 months ago Andrea Lunn opened her first dress agency and hasn’t looked back since.

Providing nearly-new designer clothing at realistic prices proved so popular that Andrea

has brought the same idea to Ossett, opening Lilly Lu on Station Road.

The idea for the Lilly Lu shops came from realising that although Ebay is

probably the most popular way of acquiringpre-owned goods, not everyone

is comfortable with computers and with clothing in particular, many buyers

want to see and try on the items before buying.

So how does the agency work? Andrea accepts and sells clothing and

designer labels up to two years old on a 50% commision basis. She will

agree a realistic sale price with you for each item of clothing you take into

the shop, asking you to call back in a month to collect the money for items

that have sold. Andrea takes 50% of the sale price in sales commision.

She puts the secret of the success of the dress agencies down to the fact

that she only accepts quality clothing under two years old and she charges

realistic resale prices for them. In the current economic climate this

provides a means of remaining stylish without breaking the bank.

The popularity of

the Lilly Lu shops

can also be

attributed to the

bags, jewellery and

accessories that

Andrea stocks to

complement the

clothing. As these

are bought brand

new, Lilly Lu is also

an ideal place to

shop for gifts.

The Ossett shop

opened to a great

response and

feedback from local

shoppers has been

amazing. If the first

week of trading is

anything to go by,

Lilly Lu Ossett is

going to be a real

success!

When Pudpot, the Yorkshire Pudding Parlour, opened in Horbury’s Tithe Barn

Street last year, most people thought “What a great idea - why hasn’t it

done before?” And the success that followed the opening reinforced

this. In fact Pudpot was so successful that Tracey, the owner, soon

had to make the decision to move to larger premises within the

grounds of Ossett Town Football Club. She left Horbury reluctantly

after the fabulous support she received there and as a gesture

of thanks to her Horbury customers, still provides a free

delivery service to Horbury from her new Ossett premises.

Perfecting the Art of

Yorkshire Pudding MakingWonder and mystery has always surrounded the

making of Yorkshire Puddings and the myth that

only Yorkshire people make truly delicious

Yorkshire puds, isn’t necessarily totally fabrication -

Yorkshire folk do make the best Yorkshire

puddings! And Tracey really has perfected the art.

With a background in the beauty business, going

into the catering business was always going to be

a big jump, but specialising in something as

temperamental as Yorkshire puddings was a huge

leap. Tracey is somewhat hesitant in giving away

the secret to her fabulous Yorkshire puddings, but

she has extended an invitation to give anyone a

lesson in making them - all you need to do is go

along to Pudpots and ask - if she isn’t too busy,

she’ll give a quick impromptu lesson.

A Traditional Roast with all

the TrimmingsTracey has always had a passion for good value

‘proper’ homemade, homecooked food and when

she saw a gap in the market in Ossett & Horbury

for something a little bit different, she jumped at it.

Giant Yorkshire puddings with a whole host of

fillings to choose from always goes down well and

is one of the most popular meal choices at Pudpots

but Tracy maintains “A full roast dinner with all the

trimmings and a couple of well risen, light Yorkshire

puds is still one of the best meals you can have”.

And Tracey’s Sunday lunches are excellent value at

only £4.95 per Adult and £3.95 per Child or Senior

Citizen portion. The roast dinners include Yorkshire

Pudding, roast potatoes (cooked in dripping), mash,

stuffing and two seasonal vegetables. The meat is

a choice of Pork Loin, Chicken or Silverside of

Beef. Open from 1pm to 5pm every Sunday, the

meals can be ordered to take out or they can be

eaten on the premises - tables can be reserved at

anytime through the week.

Something for EveryoneAs well as the traditional roast dinners and Giant

Yorkshires, Pudpots provides a full breakfast

service from 8.30am with everything you would

expect. In addition to the standard breakfast fayre,

Pudpots also offers special breakfast choices for

slimmers (lean, griddled and non-stodgy), coeliacs

(gluten free) and vegetarians (meat substitutes).

For lunches, hot roast sandwiches are a speciality,

with Tracey quick to emphasise only the best cuts

of meat used. Steak & Ale, Meat & Potato, Mince

& Onion, Steak & Kidney and Chicken &

Mushroom pies are all available with homemade

chips or mash and mushy peas or beans.

Even Better Value with Meal

Deals and Special Offers Credit crunch busting Meal Deals are available

through the week, giving even better value for

money. Customers can book for the week (but still

order and choose on a daily basis) and for every 4

meals booked, two desserts are given free. Plus

free delivery is included within Ossett & Horbury.

Special Offers are available daily: Jacket Potatoes

for £1.50 on Mondays, Tuesday is Pie Day, with

pies for £2.20 with free mushy peas or beans and

onion gravy, on Thursdays Paninis are all £2.10

and on Fridays, any Coffee with a slice of any cake

is only £2.00.

Catering and FunctionsAs well are providing a popular eat-in or take-out

service, Pudpots can offer outside catering at a

venue of your choice or can provide catering within

the Ossett Town Football Club. If you choose to

book catering with Pudpots, no charge will be

made for the clubroom, which represents really

good value for special occasions and events.

Contact Tracey for prices and menu choices.
