This is the formula for the greatestprotection we can have from theBalaks and Bil'ams of the world. Andits disregard makes us terriblyvulnerable to them. What a contrastbetween the end of the sedra and theend of the haftara! Again, we have thesimple but powerful point.
This is how we are supposed to behave(from the haftara). This is how webehaved... and what happened to us(from the sedra).
Lessons from the Torah and from thehaftara - as there also should be. Wejust have to learn them.
This week's haftara reading, takenfrom Sefer Micha, would appear tohave little in common with our Torahreading beyond the mention of howHashem saved Israel from the designsof Bil'am, from his attempts to curseB'nei Yisra'el. And, perhaps, we mightbe satisfied with that connectionalone. Certainly, that comment issignificant enough to remind us of theevents in the parsha. One may wellargue that other haftarot have evenless connection to the events of theirparasha. Nonetheless, it behooves usto try and find a deeper, perhaps even
more basic, connection between theparsha and the Torah reading. In thatvein, I share with you the approach ofRav Menachem Liebtag in analyzingthe lesson found in this haftara andthe events we read of in the parsha. The closing words of this week'shaftara are among the most familiar inall of Tanach. The navi Micha'sstatement that Hashem demands nomore of you than ASOT MISHPATV'AHAVAT CHESED V'HATZNEI'A LECHETIM ELOKECHA, "to do justice, lovekindness and walk modestly withHashem", is better understood whenseen as part of the basic messageimparted to the nation at that time.Rabbi Liebtag sees the navi's messageas a condemnation of the people'sfalse security, of their misplacedconfidence in G-d's help, relying, asthey did, on their sacrificial practices.The nation, misled by the false idea of
