Page 5: Our Future Is Ever Green - Homepage - Washington State ...

Dear Friends,

This has been a highly successful year for the Founda-tion. We celebrated the construction and opening of the John F. Greacen AgriLab, our first named building, thanks to the generosity of many and especially our longtime benefactor, John Greacen.

We also celebrated our first named multi-purpose educational area in the Carson K. Miller Library, called the Infinite Learning Space, thanks to the generosity of Warren and Georgene T. Johnson. Georgene, our Di-rector of Library Services, was also directly involved in the renovation, design, and decoration of this modern educational environment.

The Foundation Board continued its focus on support-ing student needs and saw a significant increase in gifts to the Student Emergency Fund and other areas designed to relieve the financial burden felt by so many of our students.

Our 2011 Annual Fund, Support, Sustain, Succeed, ex-ceeded its stated goal by fifty-two percent, resulting in additional money available for scholarships, academic programs, arts and humanities, student professional development, textbooks and emergency needs, and course required equipment.

We are looking forward to working closely with the college’s new president, Dr. Bradley J. Ebersole, who is keenly interested in successful philanthropic programs and opportunities at Washington State. He will be a strong asset to our fundraising initiatives.

In each year that passes, we are increasingly mindful of how important our donors are to the success and future of the college. We are grateful for your ongoing commitment to quality education and for making such a positive impact in the lives of our students and their families. We are, above all, grateful to you for sharing a part of your lives to make a difference that guides and supports the future of our community.

Sincerely,

Jeanette E. Hale, Ph.D. President, Washington State Community College Foundation Board

Carissa Anderson ’00 was a PSEO student at Washington State while in high school, graduated cum laude from Washington State in 2000 with an Associate of Arts degree in Liberal Arts, graduated magna cum laude in 2002 from Marietta College with a bachelor’s degree in Organizational Communication, and received her mas-ter’s degree summa cum laude in Corporate Media from Marietta College in 2006.

After earning her bachelor’s degree, she returned to Washington State to provide leadership in the college’s Tech Prep Program, through which she built strong rela-tionships with area school districts, helped inspire high school students to develop their talents, and served as liaison between the Tech Prep consortium and the Ohio Department of Education and the Ohio Board of Regents.

In 2007, she became the relationship manager at Ohio University, Athens, and developed a more seamless transfer process for students from Washington State Community College who wanted to pursue a bachelor’s degree.  Her dedication and energy were soon recog-nized by the University and she was made the Director of Articulation Services for Ohio University.

Today she manages a staff of ten; creates and manages all University articulation agreements, policies and procedures for secondary and post-secondary schools;

serves as University liaison to the Ohio Board of Regents for the Career Technical Assurance Guide initiative; and coordinates and manages all logistical pieces for one of the fastest growing program areas at Ohio University – online degree completion programs. Carissa is frequently on Washington State’s cam-pus talking to students about transfer opportunities to Ohio University.

In addition, she is responsible for the Bachelor of Science in Nursing Academic Outreach initiative and the College Program for the incarcerated, a non-degree distance learning initiative.

As a native of Appalachia, it is important to Ms. Ander-son not only to create opportunities but also to remove obstacles that may discourage students from continuing their educations. Her achievements have had a signifi-cant impact on the lives of countless students. She has opened doors and created academic opportunities that are accessible and affordable and which support academic success for students of all ages, backgrounds and financial situations.

Personal Legacies Through Philanthropy And The Heritage SocietyThe Washington State Community College Foundation established the Heritage Society to recognize and thank those who generously entrust a Planned Gift to the college’s future. Currently, our Honor Roll of legacy gift contributors includes:

Harold J. CopenDaniel K. Graham & Family*John F. Greacen*Louise E. Holmes*Thomas Steckel, Ph.D.*

For many, deferred gifts and bequests are attractive options in planning long-term financial and retirement programs that not only enhance the lives of the donors and their beneficiaries but also positively influence and shape the futures of their charities of choice.

Giving opportunities and options are varied and may be tailored to suit the desires and objectives of individual benefactors. Gifts may be designated for a specific purpose, or may be given without restrictions. In addition to knowing that your gift will be appreciated and have a positive impact upon the future of the college, income tax deductions and capital gains exemptions are just two of the possible additional benefits.

If you have already included Washington State Community College in your plans, we welcome you as a member and ask that you let us know of your intentions. In that way, you not only help us with future planning, but also allow us the opportunity to thank you properly.

Donors of charitable gifts are urged to consult a financial professional or attorney to explore the ways in which a gift made in their lifetime may be advantageous not only to them and to their heirs, but also to Washington State Community College.

Those considering a gift to the Foundation may do so in the name of ‘’The Washington State Community College Foundation.’’

Dear Friends,

Since my arrival at Washington State Community College in September 2011, I have had an opportunity to meet many of the institution’s generous donors. Each conversa-tion demonstrates to me that there is a high level of commitment to the college, and your dedication to our mission is strong and positive.

I have quickly learned that the Foundation Board is a group of enthusiastic people motivated to find the resources we need to build a solid present and secure future for Washington State. I am impressed by the level of activity of the Board.

In the coming weeks, Washington State faculty and staff will help to identify and priori-tize projects and institutional needs to support our mission and enhance the college’s growth. Following that effort, I look forward to working closely with the Foundation Board as it focuses upon those initiatives, and helps us to identify means to assist the college in enhancing the educational environment.

Please know my door is always open. You are welcome to stop by any time to introduce yourself, chat about your experiences at the college, or offer your suggestions to make Washington State Community College the first choice in education in southeastern Ohio.

With warm regard,

Bradley J. Ebersole, Ph.D. President, Washington State Community College

On October 22, 2010, Washington State dedicated its first named building in recognition of John F. Greacen, Jr., whose generosity significantly supported the project. “There is nothing in the world,” he said at the ribbon cut-ting, “like knowing you can make a difference, however small, in the lives of hard working students who just need a break to make their dreams happen. AgriLab offers a lot of opportunity for farmers and agricultural businesses in southeastern Ohio. I want to thank all of the wonderful donors who made this dream come true for the new Agribusiness Management program.”

The 75 foot by 24 foot poly-covered greenhouse cost $100,000 and provides year-round opportunities for students in the Agribusiness Management program to learn hands-on skills in disciplines such as soil sciences, crop production, and crop and pest management.

John’s faith in the value of a community college education has led him to generously support the College in a multitude of ways. He en-dowed two full-tuition scholarships and has contributed to institutional renovation and construction projects, student professional development, and the Student Emergency Fund.

The AgriLab dedication also honored all those major donors whose gifts made the AgriLab possible: Wash-ington/Morgan/Meigs College Tech Prep Consortium, Farm Credit Services of Mid-America, Louis and Betty Huck, Ohio Farm Bureau Foundation, Charles Ingraham, Jack Haessly, Charlotte R. Hatfield, John Spear, Smith Concrete Company, Silverheels Contractors, and Bartlett Farmers Bank.

John became a Trustee of the College in 1992. After 19 years of service, he retired from the board. He had been appointed Trustee Representative on the newly established Washington State Community College Foun-dation Board in 2004. Mr. Greacen is now a member of the Foundation Board.

There is nothing in the world like knowing you can make a difference. — John F. Greacen

While working with the Foundation to help develop a campaign to renovate a computer lab in the Carson K. Miller Library, Georgene Johnson, the college’s Director of Library Services, knew exactly what she wanted – a quiet, multi-purpose learning environment with modern technology suitable for both academic instruction and corporate meetings. Her goal was to create a space in line with the Library Services and Technology Act: “To ensure that all libraries use technol-ogy to improve services and facilitate access to materials and information resources for all residents.”

Georgene was helping the Foundation prepare a donor presentation when she stood up and said, “I need to make a phone call.”

In minutes, she returned with a gift from her and her husband, Warren, to cover the cost of renovation.

Later, she related that she had suggested a gift to him and he said, “Why not do it all?”

The Johnsons’ gift came as a result of Georgene’s thir-teen years of dedicated commitment to creating a campus library facility with services that rival far larger colleges, and of Warren’s philanthropic commitment to the community and the College.

The Infinite Learning Space is a gift to the College, its students, and the community. It is an active academic, workforce development, meeting, and study facility with an interactive digital, electronic teaching/learning projection board, new furniture, new carpeting, and new paint to brighten the area. The old computer lab was upgraded to include twenty-four energy and main-tenance efficient public computers.

Gifts to Washington State Community College Foundation, regardless of size, benefit our stu-dents, the College, and ultimately the communi-ties in which our students live and work. Every gift is significant because every gift helps to promote quality education, a skilled workforce, and a fu-ture of growth and success in southeastern Ohio.

Collectively, donor gifts help to sustain the pres-ent and secure the future for the College and for all those who want to improve their lives and the lives of their families.

Outright gifts often include gifts of cash, securi-ties, or property for which the donor receives tax advantages. For example, in the case of gifts of appreciated securities, the donor is entitled to a charitable income tax deduction based upon the fair market value of the securities, and capital gains taxes are avoided.

Deferred gifts involve the irrevocable transfer of an asset to a charitable organization. The donor may retain either an income stream or the re-mainder interest. Current tax laws permit several

planning alternatives for deferred gifts allowing the donor to receive a charitable income, gift, or estate tax deduction. These planned giving op-tions include Charitable Remainder Trusts, Chari-table Lead Trusts, Life Insurance, and others.

Bequests are gifts made to a charity as a named beneficiary in the donor’s will or trust, and may provide for an outright or a split-interest gift. The donor’s estate may receive an estate tax deduc-tion for the value of the gift.

Employer Matching Gift Programs: Many employ-ers have matching gift programs that match their employees’ gifts of cash or appreciated securi-ties, adding additional support in the name of the donor. When a donor gives a gift to a charity, he or she notifies the Human Resources department of the gift and completes the employer’s matching gift form.

Donors are encouraged to discuss their planned gift and major gift plans for a charity with their at-torney or financial planner.
