Why Do We Do What We Do at Mass? I was recently asked, “Why don’t you print the Sunday scripture readings in the worship aid?”

To answer that question, many parishes do use misselettes which contain the scripture readings. Conse-quently, many worshipers are able to read along with the lector. This may be fine for those with hearing difficul-ties, but this is not the ideal.

The Church teaches us that the scripture readings are “proclaimed” during Mass. Additionally, since they are the spoken Word of God, when they are proclaimed during Mass it is the Lord God Himself who is speaking to us. With this in mind, we can understand how important it is to listen to someone who speaks to us. Listening is es-sential. It is the most important component of communication. The Church wants us to listen, not to read along. The Church wants us to realize that God is actually speaking to each of us personally through the inspired Word. In such a case, you don’t read as someone is speaking. Now, the misselette becomes a distraction to our ability to listen.

Additionally, since we publish our own worship aid for a period of several weeks, space in the program for scripture readings would add to its size and cost.

If you need to read the scriptures along with the lector because you have difficulty hearing, the Sunday read-ings can be found in the bulletin each week in the Sunday Scripture Readings section. You can bring your bible to church or read the scripture readings at home in advance. See the next page.

Many parishes do use misselettes, and they contain the readings and they offer a selection of hymns. How-ever, for us at OLC the misselettes do not contain a selection of hymns that we would readily use. It is better for us to publish the hymns we require. This means additional work, but it works better for us. This is another reason why we don’t use misselettes.

PARISH PICNIC This Sunday

After the 12:30 Mass As we welcome summer, Community Builders is sponsoring an old-fashioned

picnic this Sunday, June 27 after the 12:30 p.m. Mass. Join us for some hot

dogs and hospitality in the Church Hall !

Continuing the Journey

“Continuing the Journey” is the title of a booklet, published by the Archdiocese, that will help someone pre-pare a Catholic Funeral. Preparing for funerals and End-of-Life issues are often the last things we have on our minds. They are issues that we often try to avoid, but can often hit us unexpectedly when we are least prepared.

This booklet is a comprehensive presentation of End-of-Life issues. Three main sections include: Bereave-ment, A Liturgical Segment and A Practical Segment. Copies are free for the taking and I strongly encourage everyone to take a copy. This booklet also helps the reader understand current medical/moral issues and the Church’s teachings on often asked questions.

“Continuing the Journey” is found on the tables as you enter church.

Monthly Can Drive Again, next weekend it is time for our monthly food drive to benefit Our Lady of Sorrows Soup Kitchen in Jersey City. We are asking parish-ioners to please bring shelf stable foods to all Masses the weekend of July 3/4. This includes

all canned and non-perishable food items. If you want to donate cash, please make out a check to Our Lady of Sor-rows with the memo “Emergency Food Pantry.” Thank you for helping with this important endeavor!

WEEKLY COLLECTIONS

Thank you so very much for your financial support. So many of our parishioners believe that it is important to financially support their parish. Thank you for living your financial commitment. Your support helps us to achieve our weekly collection goal of $6,000 per Sun-day.

For the weekend of June 19/20 there were a total of 380 people who attended Mass. The total weekend collection came to $6,038 (of that amount $2,050 came from parish members making their contributions electronically through Parish Pay). This amount is $38 ABOVE our weekly goal of $6,000 per Sunday.

We appreciate all those who act as good stewards of their time & treasure by joining us for Mass in their faithful giving for the collections; and we ask that more parishioners and visitors be responsible stewards sup-porting the parish.

A Changing of the Guard Mr. Heath Winborn, Director of Operations for OLC Parish,

has accepted a position with St. Joseph’s Parish, New Milford effective July 1, 2010. As Heath accepts this new position, I ex-tend my appreciation and gratitude for his years of service to the parish and for the assistance he has afforded me during my first year at OLC. I pray that his work at St. Joseph’s will be fruitful.

Additionally, I congratulate Heath and his wife Sarah on the birth of their fourth child. As Heath accepts his new position, the Winborns will be moving out of their 600 square foot apart-ment in Brooklyn into larger accommodations in New Jersey.

As Heath leaves us, let us welcome Ms. Carmen Lorenzo, MBA, who will assume the position of Director of Operations. Ms. Lorenzo is a graduate of Fairleigh Dickinson University’s MBA Program in Management. She has been employed by vari-ous Fortune 100 companies and has extensive experience in con-tracts, management of information, personnel and physical re-sources, as well as Microsoft and Webmaster certifications from William Paterson University. Ms. Lorenzo is certified as a Medi-cal Technologist and has a Master’s Equivalency in Transfusion Medicine. She has held supervisory and consultant positions within the medical / laboratory field wherein Ms. Lorenzo’s re-sponsibilities included laboratory design, budget preparation, workshop/training development and regulatory / accreditation / licensure compliance.

Fr. Tom

“The harvest is rich,” Jesus tells the seventy-two in today’s Gospel, “but the workers are few.” The situation is the same today. How can I help with God’s harvest? Am I called into the field? Am I one who could provide food or shelter or wages to those who toil in the fields of the Lord?

Mass Intentions If you wish to have a Mass celebrated for someone or for a particular Intention please call (201-434-0798), stop by the rec-tory or send an e-mail to: [email protected]. We maintain a living bond with our loved ones as we remember them in our prayers.

Try to make a special effort to attend daily Mass. Take time during your lunch break or attend mass in the morning before work. It will take extra effort to do so, but the rewards will be invaluable and eternal.
