fourth sunday of lent / 40 domingo de cuaresma 3

Dear Parishioners and Friends of Our Lady of Fatima,This Fourth Sunday of Lent the gospel reading is the parable of the Prodigal Son. The story has three characters: the repenting son, the prodigal father and the self justifying elder son.

The younger repenting son wanted his freedom from his father. He forced his father to give him his portion of his estate (see Deut. 21:17). He then left his family behind and set out on his own. He spent his inheritance on a libertine life. A famine came upon the land and the son lost all he possessed. He was forced to live as a hired servant. He came to his senses and returned home to beg mercy.

The father representing God the Father promptly gave his son his share of the property, bid him farewell and waited for his return. Finally the boy returned dressed in rags, confessed his sins, begged his father’s forgiveness and the father promptly forgave him.

The elder son represents the self-righteous Pharisees. The elder son had no feelings of compassion for his brother. He was the dutiful son but his heart was not in it. He was resentful, bitter and angry.

This is a story of God’s mercy and compassion for repentant sinners. At one time or another we are the repenting son or the self-justifying elder son. Yet God allows us to go our way but is eagerly awaiting our return and willing to showers his mercy upon us.
