STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION FOR THE WEEK OF DECEMBER 27 / REFLEXIÓN DE LA CORRESPONSABILIDAD PARA LA SEMANA DEL 27 DE DICIEMBRE

We celebrate the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph today. This feast was instituted a little more than 100 years ago because at that time, just as today, the concept of family was under attack. Pope Leo XIII, who served from 1878 to 1903, felt that in Europe in particular the family was in crisis.

The Gospels do not tell us much about the Holy Family in the years from Jesus’ birth to the beginning of His public ministry. We are aware that they fled to Egypt, returned to Nazareth, and today’s Gospel reading tells us

of the twelve-year-old Jesus accompanying His parents to Jerusalem. Today we honor that Holy Family, and we understand that they are a model for us as a Christian family. However, there is also an understanding that we need to be aware that we are part of a bigger family, our faith community as a Church and as a parish.

Just as a family unit cannot function properly without each member playing a part, that is true of our local parish family as well. Each of us needs to play a role and to contribute as a member of that family. That is what stewardship is all about. We must be stewards for our personal families to function, and we must also be good stewards for our parish family to be effective.

FOR A LONGER REFLECTION OR MORE INFO ON STEW-ARDSHIP: HTTP://WWW.THECATHOLICSTEWARD.COMCelebramos la Sagrada Familia de Jesús, María y José en la actualidad.

FEAST OF THE HOLY FAMILY OF JESUS, MARY AND JOSEPH / LA SAGRADA FAMILIA DE JESUS, MARIA Y JOSE 3

IHow easy is it for us to fall into the seasonal pattern of mass marketers and financial driven businesses? I was in Rite Aid on December 6 and they were trying to clear out the Christmas decorations: lights and trees were 50% off. Christmas was still three weeks away…! We make comments about it every year, but it never changes. Things get put up earlier and put away earlier to get ready for New Year’s and then Valentine’s Day.

I like that in most churches we stay with our own seasons. Every year several people will ask me, “Where is the Church’s Christmas Tree?” I smile and say, “We’re still in Advent, we’ll put up our trees and lights and celebrate when Jesus is born.” In fact we celebrate for the next 12 days until the Epiphany on January 6. We call this the Christmas Season. It’s like we live in two different worlds. The physical/material world pulls us one way and our desire to be closer to God draws us another. As we come here and experience the Church’s seasons, let this become the foundation of our spiritual life that will help us navigate the world and society outside.

Thursday Night Confessions: 7pm, January 7 & 14 (at Church)

God bless you all!

Fr. Jim

Navidad todavía estaba a tres semanas ...!

Padre Jim

Chaplet of Divine Mercy JANUARY 8, 3PM / OLF CHURCHPlease join us in praying the Chaplet. It’s a great way to ask for God’s mercy during this Jubilee Year of Mercy! Please note the special date for January, due to the first Friday falling on New Year’s Day. The regular first Friday prayer gathering will resume in February.

Donate a Toy! / Done un Juguete! On January 9 a group of parishioners will visit faith formation children in Tecate, Mexico, at Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception Church, to celebrate the Epiphany. We have celebrate Mass, provide lunch, break a couple of piñatas, and give each child a toy. We invite you to donate a doll or a soccer ball which can be turned in at the office. These children are very needy. If you would like to join us, we will leave at 7am and return in the evening. A meeting to plan trip will be held on January 8 at 7pm. Fr. Sal’s brother, Fr. Francisco Landa, is the pastor of the children we will visit. The girl in the wheelchair was so joyful to receive a toy last year.

Padre Salvador Landa

Today’s readings connect us to God’s vision for human relation-ships especially those found within the family. St. Paul in the second reading makes clear that the foundation for our human relationships is our relationship with God. When Christ dwells in us and “controls our hearts,” we are able to see others as brothers and sisters – members of the one body. It is then that we grow in love – the bond of perfection. As we begin this Year of Mercy, let us take to heart the words of St. Paul and respond to one another with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.

◆ What makes a family holy in today’s world?

◆ How might seeing others as a sister or brother in Christ change the relationship?

Take a moment to revisit this Sunday’s readings [Sirach 3:2-6, 12-14; Col 3:12-21; Lk 2:41-52] or view them online at http://usccb.org/bible/readings/122715.cfm

HOLY YEAR OF MERCY: MERCIFUL LIKE THE FATHERAÑO SANTO DE LA MISERICORDIA: MISERICORDIOSO COMO EL PADRE

Pope Francis has asked us to be more merciful and to incorporate the Corporal and Spiritual Acts of Mercy into our daily lives. During the year we will highlight the different acts and give concrete ideas on how to live them. Please visit www.usccb.org for more ideas.

CORPORAL ACT OF MERCY: TO FEED THE HUNGRY ◆ Having delicious food at Christmas dinner? Donate to a Christmas

food drive so everyone can have something to eat.

◆ Research, identify and contribute financially to organizations that serve the hungry.

◆ The next time you make a recipe that can be easily frozen, make a double batch and donate one to your local food pantry or soup kitchen.

◆ Try not to purchase more food than you are able to eat. If you notice that you end up throwing groceries away each week, purchasing less groceries would eliminate waste and allow you to donate the savings to those in need.

SPIRITUAL ACT OF MERCY: TO CONVERT SINNERS ◆ Do not judge, but be supportive in helping others find their way and

correct their mistakes. Together we can learn to walk more closely with Christ.

◆ In humility we must strive to create a culture that does not accept sin, while realizing that we all fall at times

◆ Don’t judge, but guide others towards the path of salvation (see Mt 7:1-2)

◆ When you correct someone, don’t be arrogant. We are all in need of God’s loving correction.

◆ We should journey together to a deeper understanding of our shared faith

◆ “Remove the wooden beam from your eye first; then you will see clearly to remove the splinter from your brother’s eye” (Mt 7:5)
