Dear friends,
This year our parish is celebrating 125 years. The original church was located near where Children’s Hospital is today, and was dedicated on November 11, 1894. We will be celebrating a special anniversary Mass with Bishop Taylor on Saturday, November 9th at the 4:30pm Mass. It will be a bilingual Mass to be followed by a celebration in the hall for this special occasion.
The current church building was dedicated on April 19, 1970, so we will also be celebrating 50 years of our current church this spring at our annual multicultural festival to be held April 25, 2020. With these big anniversaries we honor the hard work, dedication, prayers and sacrifices of those who came before us, and we pray for God’s blessing and strength that we might continue this legacy of faith in our time, to let the light of Christ shine forth through our prayers and the works of our hands, to hand on faithfully what we have received to those who will follow us.
I would like to invite you all to mark your calendars for these special anniversary celebrations. And please know of my deep gratitude for the many volunteers, services, ministries, prayers and sacrifices of so many people who build up our parish community in faith today. May the good Lord grant us all a time of grace and blessing in this anniversary year.

Este año nuestra parroquia celebrará 125 años. La iglesia original, dedicada el 11 de noviembre de 1894 estuvo ubicada donde el Hospital Infantil está el día de hoy. Celebraremos una misa especial de aniversario con el Obispo Taylor el sábado 9 de noviembre a las 4:30 PM. Será una misa bilingüe seguida por una celebración en la cafetería para esta tan especial ocasión. El edificio de la iglesia actual fue dedicado el 19 de abril de 1970, así que celebraremos 50 años de nuestra actual iglesia la primavera entrante durante nuestra feria multicultural anual, que será celebrada el 25 de abril del 2020. Con estos tan grandiosos aniversarios honramos el arduo trabajo, dedicación, oración y sacrificio de aquellos que estuvieron antes que nosotros y oramos por la bendición de Dios. Pedimos que la fuerza nos ayude a continuar esta legacía de fe en nuestro tiempo, que la luz de Cristo brille a través de nuestras plegarias y el trabajo de nuestras manos para así poder pasar fielmente el legado a aquellos que vengan después de nosotros.
Les invito a poner en su calendario estas celebraciones especiales de aniversario. Así también les quiero ofrecer mi mas profundo agradecimiento por cada voluntario, servicio, ministerio, oración y sacrificio de cada una de las personas que edifica nuestra comunidad de fe el día de hoy. Heavenly Father, increase our faith in the real presence of your Son, Jesus Christ, in the Holy Eucharist.
We are obliged to adore Him, to give Him thanks and to make reparation for sins.
We need Your peace in our hearts and among nations. We need conversion from our sins and the mercy of
your forgiveness. May we obtain this through prayer
and our union with the Eucharistic Lord. Please send down the Holy Spirit upon all peoples
to give them the love, courage, strength and willingness to respond to the invitation to
Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration. We beseech You to spread Perpetual Exposition of the Most Blessed Sacrament in parishes around the world.

Perpetual Eucharist Adoration
Saint Teresa of Calcutta Feast Day, September 5th
December 12 is the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe. It was on this date in 1993, that Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration was begun in Arkansas, at our parish of Our Lady of Good Counsel. Our small chapel became the very first home in our state, of the TRUE PRESENCE of Jesus Christ's body, blood, soul and divinity on a 7-day/24-hour basis. At a time when events of historical significance seemed to be so important, our parish has been a part of one of the greatest events possible, but sadly. that treasure sometimes goes begging for participation. This past December 2018, we observed the 26th anniversary of Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration. . . quite an impressive record! We thank God for this visible presence in our parish, and humbly ask Him to allow it to continue to flourish as He continues to invite you to join Him. Currently, we have exposition of the sacrament on Friday from 8:30 am—9:00 pm. The chapel is always available for parishioners to come pray before the tabernacle. Call the office for the entrance code. That is all that is necessary for you to participate in this important ministry.
The annual Mass celebrating the feast day of St. Teresa of Calcutta was held on Thursday, September 5th at Our Lady of Good Counsel. Six women took vows as Lay Missionaries of Charity during Mass: Helen Evans and Susan Holmes from Good Counsel; Father Josh’s mom, Pat Stengel from St. Anthony in Ratcliff; Kaylon Scroggins and Becky Johnson from St. Agnes in Mena; and Peggy Stelmach from the Cathedral of St. Andrew. A potluck dinner was held after Mass. A special thank you to the Stained Glass Ministry and all those who helped with set-up, decorations, food service and clean-up!

Hola familia del Buen Consejo, los saludo con el
mismo cariño de siempre, anunciándoles que ya hemos empezado el catecismo y que nos estamos preparando para todas las actividades que se nos avecinan, empezando en octubre 20 con el domingo Mundial de las Misiones, donde los niños visten camisetas de colores anunciando los cinco continentes del mundo, a la vez que rezamos el Rosario misionero.
Después tendremos la festividad de todos santos, durante el primer domingo de noviembre, los niños del catecismo se podrán vestir de Santos.
También celebraremos el día de Acción de Gracias ya casi para terminar con el mes, de tal manera que no
tendremos clase el primer domingo de diciembre, y así damos inicio con el Año Litúrgico, iniciando con Adviento, la celebración de la Inmaculada Concepción, la festividad de la Virgen de Guadalupe con la novena de rosario en las casas de algunas familias. Finalmente las posadas, novena de rosarios también en casa de algunas familias, donde rezamos y cantamos villancicos para alegrar el tiempo de preparación
para el nacimiento del niño Jesús. Dentro de lo espiritual tendremos nuestro tiempo para prepararnos individualmente, yendo a la reconciliación en diferentes tiempos que el Sacerdote de la parroquia ofrecerá y así estar en buen estado de gracia para recibir al Niño Jesús, y el año nuevo. Y los dejo con un buen deseo de amor y bienestar que el amor de Dios reine en los corazones de todas las familias del Buen Consejo, con mucho cariño. Su amiga en Cristo, María Luna
Hello Good Counsel Family, I greet you with the same affection as always. We have already started Sunday religious education and we’re preparing for the upcoming activities. We will be starting with World Mission Sunday on Oct. 20th. On this day children will wear different colors to show the 5 different continents in the world as well as praying the missionary Rosary. On All Saints Day (the first Sunday in November) the kids will dress as saints. We will also celebrate Thanksgiving later in November and we will not have class the first Sunday in December.
Then we begin the new liturgical year. In Advent, we will celebrate the Feast of the Immaculate Conception. During the festivity of the Virgin of Guadalupe we will have novenas in some of our families’ houses. Also, in some of our families’ houses, we will hold Posadas or Christmas novenas where we pray and sing Christmas carols to joyfully prepare ourselves for the birth of
baby Jesus. As for spiritual matters, we will have a chance to individually prepare by going to reconciliation therefore being in good graces to receive baby Jesus and the new year. En un mundo donde las noticias, políticas y tragedias nos hacen sentir indefensos y sin esperanza, quiero contarles de algo que me hace sentir un poquito útil. Cada tercer jueves del mes, 16 de los feligreses de nuestra parroquia se juntan para alimentar entre 50 y 100 de nuestros hermanos y hermanas sin albergue. No ha habido ni un solo jueves en el cual no nos hayan dado las más profundas gracias. Aunque me gustaría que las cosas cambiaran a nivel macro, encuentro consuelo en poder ofrecer una pequeña acción para el bien. Como Santa Teresa de Calcuta dijo alguna vez, “Nosotros mismos sentimos que lo que hacemos es tan solo una gota en el océano. Thank you to Maureen Burnham for her leadership of the Stained Glass Ministry for the past few years. She took over this role from Mary Kallenbach who organized the ministry for Fr. Harvey when he returned as pastor in 2013.
Maureen and her group of volunteers served funeral meals to many Good Counsel families after the loss of their loved one. They also coordinated the St. Teresa of Calcutta feast day potluck every year. Maureen is turning over the reins of this ministry to Soni Scott who has as-sisted her on many occasions.
There is always room for more volunteers in this program to bring in potluck dishes, help set-up, serve, and clean-up...Whatever you can do will be appreci-ated!
In a world where sometimes news, politics, and tragedies can make us feel helpless and hopeless, I want to tell you about something that makes me feel useful. Every 3rd Thursday of the month, 16 of our parishioners get together and feed 50 to 100 our homeless brothers and sisters. There has never been a single Thursday that people have not heartfelt thanked us. Although I hope for change in a macro scale, I can find consolation in offering a small act of service and hope to create a small change for the better. As Saint Teresa of Calcutta once said, “We ourselves feel that what we are doing is just a drop in the ocean. I want to share an experience I, along with the missionary team, had during the stations of the cross at the communities on Bowman and Shackleford. As we made our way through the streets where, the people prayed and sang with great fervor. We bore the cross with great faith and devotion. The stations were 14 different houses. Each family had set up a small altar, sweetly decorated with flowers, candles, and religious images. On May 17th we had Mass on Shackleford, celebrated by Father Joshua Stengel. Mass was celebrated in the house of Cecilia and Ricardo García who, with great joy, opened their homes to this great blessing of God for them, as they expressed it. It was so motivating to see how people would set up the place, putting chairs, tables, flowers and all necessary things for a celebration. There were about 25 adults, not counting all kids, which was an even bigger number. When Mass ended, we had a cheerful fellowship to celebrate this space of encounter with God and each other, in which we enjoyed different dishes that people prepared so lovingly. It was such a poignant experience for all, especially for those who live there. It made them feel the welcome and closeness of our parish through the priest and missionary team. Those in attendance also experienced God and fellowship with each other in their faith journey.

Quiero compartir la experiencia vivida durante el tiempo de cuaresma, en el que junto con el equipo misionero, tuvimos el viacrucis en dos centros de reunión en Bowman y Shackleford. El recorrido lo hicimos por las calles, en donde con gran fervor, las personas rezaban y cantaban, cargando la cruz con gran fe y devoción. Las estaciones fueron en 14 hogares, cada familia colocó un pequeño altar, bellamente arreglado con flores, velas e imágenes religiosas. de mayo tuvimos la Misa en Shackleford, celebradpor el Padre Joshua Stengel en casa de Cecilia y Ricardo García, quienes con gran alegría abrieron las puertas de su hogar a esta gran bendición de Dios para ellos, así lo expresaron. Fue motivador ver como las personas acondicionaban el lugar, poniendo sillas, mesas, flores y todo lo necesario para la celebración, participaron alrededor de 25 adultos, sin contar los niños que fueron en mayor número.
Terminada la Misa tuvimos una animada convivencia para celebrar este espacio de encuentro con Dios y con los demás, en la que disfrutamos de diversos platillos que las personas prepararon con mucho cariño.
Fue una experiencia muy significativa para todos, especialmente para las personas de este lugar pues les hizo sentir el interés y la cercanía de la Parroquia a través del Sacerdote y del Equipo Misionero, además de vivir un momento de encuentro con Dios y de convivencia con los demás que les ayudó en la vivencia de su fe.

The 2nd Living Nativity will be held the evening of January 4th after the 4:30 Mass and January 5th (the Feast of the Epiphany) between the 10:30 and 2:00 Masses. The Patriotic Rosary for America is prayed each Friday at 3 p.m. in the Adoration Chapel. This is an important ministry of prayer for our Country of America while at the
same time reveals the religious heritage and background of our nation. The meditations for each decade are drawn from writings of our founding fathers and are as prayers also. Please allow approximately 45 minutes for this Rosary. Join us following the rosary for the Divine Mercy Chaplet!

Our Lady of Good Counsel is involved with the Our House Ministry. On the third Thursday of each month, we feed about 100
men, women, and children. Anyone that would like to make a donation, can make a check out to Our Lady of Good Counsel and place it in an envelope labeled Our House. If

A support group for those affected by any type of abuse will meet Saturday, November 2 at St. Joseph Spiritan Center, 1115 College Ave. in Conway, from 10-11:30 a.m. During the meeting, small group discussions for men and women will be held as well as time for prayer and reflection. It is open to all Christians who are seeking healing. The Maria Goretti Network will meet the first Saturday of every month. For more information, contact Fr. For Retirement
Good Counsel parishioner, Judge Leon Holmes, has officially left the courthouse to pursue retirement with his wife, Susan. After a 15 year career as a US District Judge, Judge Holmes will now preside over rulings involving how much time to spend with each of his 17 grandchildren spread over four states and in Arkansas. Judge Holmes has served Good Counsel well in many roles including as lector at Mass, and as bus driver for the Abba House and residents at Good Shepherd so they could attend Mass. Congratulations, Susan and Leon, on the next chapter!
