S 10, 2017 2 — O L L V C C

Late last year or early this year, I can’t remember which, a group of people organizing a pilgrimage to Fatima and Lourdes asked me if I would consider going along on the pilgrimage as the chaplain. Since I had never been to either of these places before, I was very happy to be invited, and I have been looking forward to making this trip. What makes this trip more special is the fact that this year is the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the apparitions of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Fatima, Portugal. The events of the apparitions began on May 13, 1917. Three shepherd children, Lucia dos Santos, age nine and her two cousins, Francisco and Jacinta Marto, age eight and six respectively were tending their parents’ flock of sheep in a place called Cova da Iria. They had finished praying the rosary, ate some lunch and were beginning to play. Suddenly, there was a brilliant flash of light. Fearing a storm, the children directed the sheep to head for shelter. Again, there was another flash of light, and there before the children appeared the vision of a beautiful Lady. The Lady majestically floated above the branches of a small oak tree. She was dressed in white and was radiant like the sun. When the children asked who she was and where she came from, the Lady told them that she was from heaven. From May through October 1917, the Lady appeared and spoke to the children on the 13th day of each month. News of these apparitions began to spread throughout the region. The children recounted that the Lady told them that God had sent her with a message for every man, woman, and child. She promised that God would grant peace to the entire world if Her requests for prayer, reparation and consecration were heard

and obeyed. While many people believed the children were actually seeing the Virgin Mary, many others discounted their story, and subjected them to much derision and ridicule. When it became known the Lady would visit the children for the last time on October 13, 1917, and had promised a sign that would convince the world she had appeared, many people made plans to attend. Though the region had been subjected to three days of torrential downpour, nearly 70,000 people journeyed through the heavy rain and mud to the place of the apparitions to witness the predicted miracle. Even though there were many who believed the children, there were also many who didn’t and only came as skeptics wanting to discredit the children and their stories of the apparitions. On October 13, at the time of the apparition, witnesses said that the clouds suddenly started to separate and the sun appeared between the clouds in the clear blue, like a disk of white fire. The onlookers were able to look directly at the sun and while they gazed at it, it appeared to begin to dance. The sun then whirled rapidly flinging out all sorts of brilliant colors that reflected on the faces of the crowds. The sun continued to gyrate in this manner three times, then seemed to tremble and shudder. Finally the sun appeared to zigzag and plunge toward the earth. The crowd was terrified, fearing this was the end of the world. Then the sun reversed its zigzag course and returned to its normal place in the sky. Witnesses estimate that all of this transpired in a period of approximately ten minutes. After realizing they were not doomed, and it was not the end of the world, the crowd began gleefully laughing, crying, shouting and weeping. Many discovered their previously drenched clothing had become perfectly dry. The reported visions at Fatima gathered widespread attention, as numerous pilgrims began to visit the site. After a canonical inquiry, the Bishop of Leiria-Fatima officially declared the visions of Fatima as "worthy of belief" in October 1930, officially permitting the belief of Our Lady of Fatima. Ever since that time, the Blessed Virgin Mary, under the title of Our Lady of Fatima, has been honored and reverenced within the Church throughout the world. As we leave on this pilgrimage on Monday, September 11, we take you all with us spiritually. We promise to remember all of you in the prayers we will offer at mass and at the various celebrations. Please pray for safe passage on our journey. We will remember all of you in our prayers. Please remember us as well.

Fr. Gerry

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ, The Diocese of Las Vegas’ annual second collection for Seminary and Clergy Education and Development takes place on the weekend of September 16 and 17. This collection supplements the ongoing education of our priests and the cost of medical care if they were to become ill, disabled or develop special needs. This collection also helps offset the cost of tuition, housing and the education of our seminarians. Our diocese is blessed to have priests who give so generously of their lives to the service of the Church and its people. They celebrate Mass on Sundays and during the week, hear confessions, anoint the sick, baptize, celebrate marriages, and pray for the dead. Our priests preach the Word of God from the pulpit and teach it in classroom settings. They also listen to their people’s joys and sorrows and promote works of charity. We are also very blessed to have nine men studying for the priesthood at Mount Angel Seminary in Saint Benedict, Oregon and at the University of St. Mary of the Lake Seminary in Mundelein, Illinois. Your continued support of this collection conveys your appreciation of our priests and seminarians. I ask that you keep them in your prayers. Assuring you of my continued prayers, I remain Sincerely yours in Christ, Most Reverend Joseph A. Pepe, D.D., J.C.D. Bishop of Las Vegas

We Place in Your Loving Arms God of love, we place in your loving arms the thousands of innocent lives that were lost on that unforgettable morning of September 11, 2001. We also remember the courage of the countless men and women who put their lives at risk in order to rescue, alleviate and bring solace to the afflicted. Help us to

continue to work for a world free from every form of hatred, violence and ignorance. May terrorism -- in all its forms -- disappear from the face of the earth. Amen.
