SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME First Reading: Leviticus 13:1-2. 44-46 Laws are imposed on Israel regarding leprosy. We can understand the fear in a community when a skin complain which looks like decomposi-tion is found in the camp: dire measures are enforced. Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 10:31-11:1 Paul insists that whatever is done should be done in the name of the Lord, and that nothing offensive should be done to anyone. Gospel: Mark 1:40-45 Jesus does the unthinkable. He not only cures a leper, he touches him, therby incurring the life of a leper: exclusion and isolation from people.

PARISH BULLETIN BOARD

NEW HYMN BOOKS ON THE WAY We are happy to announce that this spring, our parish will be getting new hymn books. We are currently using the well-loved and well-worn first edition of “Journeysongs”, the “blue hymnal” which has served us well for almost thirty years. These will be replaced by the “Journeysongs, Third Edition”, bound in an attractive green hardcover to keep in the pews. You can take part in this liturgical enrichment by memorializing a hymnal in memory of a deceased loved one, or honoring a living person with the gift of a hymnbook donated in their name. All the books will remain in the church for the congregation's use, and a commemorative plate will be inscribed with the honoree's name inside the book. The cost of dedicating a hymnbook will be $30.

Please cut and return this form to the parish office or drop in the collection baskets during the masses in a closed envelope along with a check or cash amount of $30.00 for each memorialized book you’d like. We ask that you do not add more than two names, if possible, so that the text will fit. Any questions, please call the parish office at 718.278.1834.

FROM THE OGLE OFFICE Dear friends,

My bulletin letter last week reported you about the 5-year Diocesan/Parochial Capital campaign called “Generations of Faith”. We are three years into the redemption phase and again I urge you to consider fulfilling pledges made. But GOF is only one form of parish stewardship for us to take note of.

Last week’s Tablet carried a centerfold insert about the success of the 2017 Annual Catholic Appeal for the support of essential diocesan services. There you may have seen the happy news that our parish exceeded its goal of $59,118, collecting 298 pledges that totaled $66,315. That means our 2017 ACA gifts supported Catholic Charities, Catholic Migration, the seminary, our retired priests and lay formation throughout the Diocese. But we also collected nearly $7,200 for needs here in our own parish. No doubt about it-- the ACA is consistently our largest single fundraising event for the parish. The over-goal monies this year went toward the cost of purchasing, equipping and installing a “smart TV” in each of our religious ed meetings rooms, and to installing protective surveillance throughout the public areas of the Institute. This expenditure will both improve the quality of catechism instruction of our children and provide greater security for our people and parish facilities. I thank all of you who supported the 2017 ACA. Your loyalty, generosity and sense of stewardship are really what makes our parish so special. I pray we can ever-widen that circle of engaged and committed parishioners who take on the ministry of stewardship of God’s gifts so we may continue to build His kingdom in our midst. In a few weeks you will receive notice about the start of the 2018 Annual Catholic Appeal. Please consider your participation when you receive the notice.

Another element of stewardship is the way we meet the concrete material needs of the needy by our parish’s good works. For over 25 years our parish at St Margaret Mary has run what I believe is now the largest parish food pantry in north Queens, feeding over 2,000 people a month.

Also: Our tenth annual ”Giving Tree” Christmas campaign collected from our parishioners hundreds of toys for poorer children of our parish, and 10 twenty-gallon bagsful of infant materials for “Bridge to Life”, now housed at St Margaret Mary.

Most recently, our Young Working Adult Committee has collected over 90 blankets for the homeless which will be distributed through the Diocesan Young Adult Ministry via Trinity Outreach Mission to the Homeless. Thank you for your won-derful support of all these campaigns of material assistance.

God love you Msgr. Ogle

PRAYER OF THE WEEK “By the sweat of your face you shall eat bread, till you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken; for you are dust, and to dust you shall return.” – Genesis 3:19 Father of my soul, Mother of my heart, I’m not always eager to do your will. I’d often much rather do my own will. Please be with me on this Lenten journey and help me to remember that your own spirit can guide me in the right direction. I want to “fix” my weaknesses but the task seems overwhelming. But I know that with your help, anything can be done. With a grateful heart, I acknowledge your love and know that without you, I can do nothing. Touch me and make me feel whole again. Help me to see your love in the passion, death and resurrection of your son. Submitted by Elaine Rodriguez Share your favorite prayers: [email protected]

CONTRIBUTION STATEMENTS If anyone is in need of a contribution statement for tax purpos-es, please contact the parish office with your envelope number ready.

LENTEN REGULATIONS—2018 ABSTINENCE: The Church requires all the faithful who have reached their 14th year of age to abstain totally from meat on all Fridays during Lent. FASTING: All the faithful between the ages of 18 and 59 inclusive are also bound to observe the fasting regulation on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. This practice involves limiting oneself to a single full meal and avoiding food between meals. Light sustenance may also be taken on two other occasions in the course of the day. The Church also requests that pastors and parents see to it that young persons who are not bound to follow the above requirements, are educated in a authentic sense of penance. EASTER DUTY: After they have been initiated into the Most Holy Eucharist, all the faithful are bound by the obligation of receiving Communion at least once a year. The precept must be fulfilled during the Easter season, unless for a good reason it is fulfilled at another time during the year. Easter time begins at the Vigil on Holy Saturday and concludes with the celebration of Pentecost. By special indult, for the Dioceses in the United States, this period is extended to include the period from Ash Wednesday to Trinity Sunday. The following should also be noted: By divine law, all the faithful are required to do penance. In view of this, the obligation to observe, as a whole or “substantially” the penitential days specified by the Church, is a serious one. uIn addition, all other Fridays of the year remain as days of penance in prayerful remembrance of the Passion of Jesus Christ. While abstinence, in a true spirit of penance, is commended, the Bishops of the United States have indicated that each individual may substitute for that tradition some other practice of voluntary self-denial or personal penance. This may involve acts of mortification, temperance, prayer or charity.

ORGAN RECITAL Save the date - On Sunday, March 4th, at 3:00 PM, Michael Ka-minski will present a program on our newly restored organ. It will feature works by Bach, Liszt, Vierne, and fantasies on favor-ite hymn tunes. All are invited. Dr. Kaminski is Director of Music Ministries at Saint Francis Xavier Church in Brooklyn, as well as lecturer at Saint Francis College and Adjunct Professor of Organ at Brooklyn College.
