Welcome Father Henry William Reid Pastor of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church On April 3, 2017, the following official appointment and an-nouncement has been made by his Excellency, the Most Rever-end John O. Barres, Bishop of Rockville Centre. Effective June 28, 2017 unless otherwise indicated, "Rev. Henry W. Reid, from Associate Pastor at Holy Name of Mary, Valley Stream to Pastor at Our Lady of Mount Carmel, Patchogue" Effective June 26, 2013, Bishop William Murphy has assigned Fa-ther Henry Reid as an associate pastor at Holy Name of Mary. After graduating from Comsewogue High School in Port Jeffer-son Station, in 1987, Father Reid attended Suffolk Community College in Selden. Some of the occupations, he has held included construction and chauffeuring. In 1997, Father Reid earned a master’s degree in European his-tory from SUNY Albany and did post-graduate research work at Queen’s University in Belfast, Ireland. It was here where he thought about his true vocation. He returned to the United States and began teaching history at Suffolk Community College. He then attended the Cathedral Seminary Residence in Douglaston for pre-theology and earned a master’s degree in divinity from the Seminary of the Immaculate Conception in Hun-tington. After being ordained on June 10, 2006, Father Reid was assigned to Holy Family parish in Hicksville. He had completed his transitional deaconate assignment at Holy Name of Mary. On June 22, 2011, he was assigned as associate pastor at St. Margaret of Scotland in Selden. Father Reid is currently Chaplain for the New York State AOH (Ancient Order of Hibernians).

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, At the end of March I received a phone call from Bishops Barres and Brennan, asking if I would consider becoming the pastor of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, without hesita on I accepted. Of course a few friends of mine have expressed concern that this is a big undertaking, but it is my belief that if God did not want me to be here at this me, the bishop would not have offered it to me. This will be a me of transi on for all of us, and we should all thank Fr. Benet for being here as the Administrator, assure him of our prayers as he begins the next stage of his ministry to the people of Sacred Heart parish. For those who may not have Googled my name as of yet, my background included me in the world of Academia, where my focus was on History, and as such I value the past greatly. Our parish has a great his-tory, from the converted garage on Waverly, to the construc on of the current church and rectory, and the later addi on of the Parish Center. There have been many good and holy people who have come to worship God and live as a Faith community over the years, and we honor their legacy by coming together as a parish community, not only on Sundays, but in our lived Eucharis c lives, through the ac vi es we share. As me goes on, we can share our visions of the future of the parish, but for now let me share this one vision of mine; that this parish will be an ac ve center of the community, where those parishioners cur-rently a ending, those who have stopped a ending, and those who have never come here before, will experience many opportuni es to deepen their rela onship with Jesus Christ. While we are called to val-ue the past, we are also called to look towards the future, to have a vision of where we are heading, but to value the present, this me we are living in, and the people with whom we are called to be in rela on-ships. Most of us have experienced those mes when we hear that someone we knew as a child was gradua ng from High School or College, and we thought, “Where has the me gone?” When we reflect back on the years, we either envision the milestones in that person’s life, and how we watched them grow up, or we realize that we were so busy elsewhere and with other things, that we missed being a part of their life. It is the same with the life of Faith we are called to, we need to par cipate in the life of the Church, and on the local level that is the parish. As I have shared part of my vision for the parish, I also want to share the responsibility of the parish. Jesus tells us “For there is nothing hidden that will not become visible, and nothing secret that will not be known and come to light.” (Luke 8:17) With that in mind, the financial ma ers of the parish will be pub-lished in the bulle n on a regular basis; because it is my belief that members of the parish community not only have a right to know, but a willingness to work towards solu ons. Two weeks ago, as I sat in the new pastors’ workshops, someone from the diocese asked if I had really been out pain ng my office here, something that many of you have already heard. As a pastor, I cannot ask anyone to do what I am not willing to do myself. We all have wonderful ideas and dreams, things that will build up the Kingdom of God here in Patchogue; together we will work to make those dreams a reality. Pax, Fr. Henry

SAINTS AND SPECIAL OBSERVANCES Sunday: Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Monday: St. Thomas Tuesday: Independence Day Wednesday: St. Anthony Zaccaria; St. Elizabeth of Portugal Thursday: St. Maria Goretti Friday: First Friday Saturday: Blessed Virgin Mary TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION It’s Independence Day week, and there is a link worth tracing between the Declaration of Independence and the language of liturgy. One of the signers of the Declaration on that July 4 long ago was Charles Car-roll, probably the wealthiest man in the colonies and one of the few Catholics on the political scene. As a flourish to his signature, he sought to distinguish him-self from other prominent citizens bearing the same name by penning “Charles Carroll of Carrolltown”—a defiant “come and get me if you dare” postscript aimed at the British. Carroll’s brother John was a priest and patriot who in 1789 was given the task of organizing the Catholic Church in this country. By 1791 he had assembled a synod, or assembly of delegates, to launch that task formally. Archbishop Carroll wanted to gain ac-ceptance of our faith by American people who mis-trusted our customs and could not comprehend our lit-urgy. He made the amazing proposal to Rome that our liturgy should be prayed not in Latin, but in the vernac-ular, English. His wish was denied, but one hundred sixty years later, his deep desire helped the American bishops and scholars at the Second Vatican Council to win the vote in favor of the vernacular not just for the United States, but for the Church throughout the world. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

THE RICHNESS OF LIFE IN CHRIST Today we have the beautiful story of the woman prom-ised a child, the wonderful exhortation about life in Christ, and a powerful instruction from Jesus. An embarrassment of riches? Not if we take Jesus' words about "welcome" to heart. The many challenges and blessings offered to us to-day by Elisha, Paul, and Jesus should be cause for rejoic-ing, and welcomed heartily into our lives. And, like the great treat that they are, they should be enjoyed and shared generously with others. Today's reading from Romans was chosen very early in the liturgical life of the Church to be the sole apostolic in-struction received by candidates for baptism at the Easter Vigil. This illustrates its importance as a core belief, and as a means of comprehending the story of the Resurrection. Christ's resurrection is not merely a story about something that he underwent once upon a time, but it is our story, the story of how we joined the other members of the one Body of Christ, the church. We were not only dead, but we were buried; not ultimately buried, but raised to eternal life with Christ. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

We welcome our new Pastor Father Henry Reid. Please join us all in welcoming Father Henry to this newest journey for Our Lady of Mount Carmel.

This weekend we are placing out Time & Talent forms for you to review and sign up or you can renew or step down from a Ministry. One per person please.

Wondering why this is so important to our Parish Community? By signing up we know who is staying or moving to another ministry, who needs training and supplies, and if we need to create a new ministry.

Think about things for a moment. There is one Priest, and 2 paid people. Oh by the way

The Deacon is also a volunteer who has spent years of his life in school to learn to serve the people of God, a er his family and livelihood.

So who do you think gets things done, or people served, trained, visited, or coordinated? Trained volunteers, all of us coming together. To be the body of Christ here at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, Diocese of Rockville Centre , Arch Diocese of New York the body of Christ as a
