Fifth Sunday of Easter MAY 6, 2012

In today’s Gospel Jesus says, “I am the Vine, you are the branches.” Here in California we can easily understand Jesus’ meta-phor, because we see the vines growing in the vineyards around us. Jesus compares our Christian lives to being branches of the vine. He wants each branch to bear fruit. Now as branches, we want to please Jesus. But, branches do not bear fruit because they “try hard”! They bear fruit because they are deeply connected to the Vine--because they are united with the Vine. Then the fruit appears natu-rally. And Jesus is the Vine. All we have to do is stay deeply united to Jesus. Then we will bear fruit. Not a com-plicated thing to do--a simple thing! And how wonderful is the fruit of the vine. Grapes burst with flavor and sweetness. Modern analysis has found that grapes contain important vitamins, minerals and antioxi-dants--not only delicious but good for you! These are the fruits we look for in others and in ourselves. You can tell when a branch is deeply connected to the Vine, because the fruit will be very good. The fruit may not be apparent until years after someone’s life (look at St Therese of Lisieux, unrecognized in her lifetime), or it may be apparent when the person is still active (look at Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta). God’s view of time is different from ours--but those who are united with Christ will bear abundant fruit sooner or later, that’s for sure. To be fruitful branches, then, we must stay united to Jesus Christ. And we also have to accept that we will be “pruned”. Vines that are not pruned do not have much fruit. There are a lot of bushy leaves instead. But pruning is a severe process, leaving the vines looking ugly--just a few branches, without twigs or leaves. In the spiritual life, we will go through phases where we feel God has “pruned” us. It is often after a period of ministry when we feel we have helped many people, and have been popular. Then, sud-denly, the ministry ends. Our new environment is less friendly. We feel that we are not bearing any fruit. But if we are still rooted and centered in Christ, then we will bear fruit again. In fact the “pruning” experience is a sign that God is pleased with us. “Every one that does bear fruit he prunes so that it bears more fruit.” So, fellow branches in the Vine, it is all Good News! And in today’s Gospel Jesus tells us one more wonderful thing about being a branch united with Him. “If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask for whatever you want and it will be done for you.” Yes, He will give us what we ask for if we are deeply united with Him. This promise has inspired me to start putting forward parish prayer intentions each month, which I invite everyone to pray for. Parish Intentions for May: All children receiving First Communion. The Vietnamese Community, as they elect a new leader. The success of our Fiesta. Reflection by Dr. Sarah

Nuestro nuevo ambiente es menos amisto-so.

CHU ́A NHẬT V PHỤC SINH-B FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER
