Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time June 23, 2013

The readings for this Sunday are so profound and radical that they have the power to shock even today. In the Gospel Peter makes a great breakthrough when he declares that Jesus is “the Christ of God.” Jesus is the anointed one. But Jesus’ response is shocking. He does not open the champagne for a celebration. He does not tell his followers to pile up weapons for a military coup. No, he pre-dicts for Himself suffering, rejection, humiliation and death. And he warns his followers that they must undergo the same. If they do not “lose their lives” they will perish. Suffering, rejection, humiliation and death are part of being a disciple. This cannot be watered down. Shocking. This is the Master we follow. The prophet Zechariah paints a picture of the House of David in a state of mourning and repentance. “They shall look on him whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn him as one mourns for an only son…” He speaks of this sin, and this grief and regret, and then he gives us God’s response: “a fountain to purify from sin and uncleanness”. The result of piercing the Holy One, and being in deep regret for it, is not punishment. Instead God provides a fountain to bring heal-ing, beauty, refreshment and peace out of terrible sin. Good out of evil. Shocking. This is the Master we follow. St. Paul draws out the implications of the death and resurrec-tion of Christ, of what it really means to be born again in Bap-tism and to be a member of His Body, the Church. He de-clares that our old divisions mean nothing any more, because we have entered into the New Era of Grace. “There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free person, there is not male and female, for you are all one in Christ.” We are all members of the Body, infinitely precious in the eyes of God, infinitely holy because of our participation in the Infinite Holy Spirit. Certainly, we are of different cultural and linguistic heritages, and we are more or less rich and powerful, and we are male and female. But, if we belong to Christ, these fea-tures do not define our real identity. We are Christ’s first. We are Christ’s last. We are Christ’s. People of another cul-ture, people of another gender, people with less, or more, power than us--they must all be treated with courtesy, re-spect and even reverence. They are all equally the Children of God. This cannot be watered down. Any less of a gospel is NOT the Gospel. What a shocking Master we follow. Reflection by Dr. Sarah

CHÚA NHẬT XII THƯỜNG NIÊN TWELFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
