With Hands to Serve and Hearts to Love
NOTE FROM OUR PRINCIPAL This week, I learned that Pauline Gilmour will be retiring at the end of the school year. Mrs. Gilmour has been at OLA for 39 years and has served as a teacher for 40. She has touched the lives of so many students and has left them with a legacy of social justice and Christian service that has no doubt enriched their lives and made our world a better place. She is fond of quoting Gandhi: "Be the change you want to see in the world," and I can think of no one who better exemplifies those words. Mrs. Bloom has also informed me that she will not be returning. She will be pursuing a new career, and we wish her the best and thank her for all the great work she has done for our school as a librarian, teacher, and Academic Decathlon chair. Our students and families will miss her. With the departures of Mrs. Tateishi, Mrs. Gilmour, and Mrs. Bloom, we have some big shoes to fill. The fourth grade position is posted on Edjoin, and interviews will take place soon. The librarian and 7
th grade positions will be posted on Edjoin this week, and we will search diligently
to bring in the very best teachers for each position. Please put Mrs. Gilmour, Mrs. Tateishi, Mrs. Bloom, and our school in your prayers. Our students in grades 3-8 are taking the ACT Aspire test this week. Please make sure that your children are well rested and have a healthy, nutritious breakfast before coming to school each day. Students in grades 6-8 are able to use calculators on the math test, which is administered on Wednesday, so please make sure they bring them to school. Last Saturday, the Cougar Classic Golf Tournament took place at the Lincoln Hills Country Club, and the event was a phenomenal success. We raised over $60,000, which will go towards LearnPad tablets for our 6
th and 7
th grade classes
next year, the adoption of new Math textbooks, and the Washington DC 8th grade trip in May of 2016. Our heartfelt thanks
go out to the Cougar Classic Golf Tournament Committee for organizing such a successful and fun fundraiser. Members include Bob Deaner and Stan Lukowicz (co-chairs), Kelley Smith, Michael Cook, Kelly Brothers, Steve Lawver, Glenn Seitz, Shaun Cho, Adam Nelson, Michael Rockenstein, Ben Stark, Jeff Hilmer, Kevin Terry, Jimmy Khov, Jeff Rosa, and Michael Tooley. Our virtue, this week, is loyalty. Please see the reflection on loyalty later in today’s bulletin. God bless,

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION Did You Meet Your Scrip Requirement?: Each family is required to purchase $3,000 worth of Scrip each school year. Is your Scrip total not where it needs to be? It’s not too late to buy more scrip. We have a fantastic assortment of scrip in stock. Just purchase gas cards before you fill up the car and grocery cards before you go shopping, and you’ll soon have your total purchases where they need to be. Think about using Scrip to buy items to donate for the upcoming Country Fair. The Country Fair needs cases of water, soda, sport drinks, and candy. We have Scrip for Sam’s Club, Raleys, Safeway, and Smart & Final. Giddy up! OLA’s Country Fair is less than 3 weeks away! Grab yer young ‘uns and saddle on up for all of your ol’ favorites and some new adventures. The ping pong tournament and the baseball pitch are back! Also, if you’re lookin’ for Bingo, it’ll be in the gym this year, and the ever popular Cake Walk will now be in the extension building. Contact Nadia Leslie at [email protected] or Yvette Gordon at [email protected] if you have any questions. Country Fair Service Hours: Please remember that each family is required to work 8 hours minimum for the Fair (5 for preschool families). Any additional hours worked can count toward your total yearly family 2014-15 hours. If, for some reason, you are unavailable on these dates (and sporting events do not count), please contact Michelle Munn [email protected] regarding your availability. There are very limited pre-fair hours available on a first come, first serve basis. All pre-fair hours must be pre-approved through Michelle. Thank you for your service, and we look forward to seeing you at the Fair!! Christian Meditation Group: In an age of rush and noise, it is essential that we find time to be still and quiet. “Be still and know that I am God,” says the Psalmist. In this prayer of silence called Christian Meditation we find God who dwells in our own heart. And, in finding Him, we find our own selves and thus, are renewed. A Christian Mediation Group regularly meets Mondays at 7:30pm in our School Library. Please call Fran at 488-4229 to learn more about this program.
OUR VIRTUE OF THE WEEK: LOYALTY Loyalty means being dependable and true to someone or something. Scripture Reference—Ruth 1:16 Wherever you go I will go, wherever you lodge, I will lodge, your people shall be my people, and your God My God. “Wherever you go, I will go…” these words from Ruth to her mother-in-law, Naomi, epitomize dedication and fealty piety. Despite Naomi’s entreaties for Ruth to return home and avoid a life of poverty with her newly widowed mother-in-law, Ruth is steadfast in her commitment to stay, even if the future is bleak. Together the two women weather storms of grief, poverty, and desperation and reach the happiest of endings. It is a profound and beautiful story of friendship, love, and most of all, loyalty. All relationships depend upon loyalty for success: fidelity in marriage, trustworthiness in friendship, and reliability among coworkers. As a part of our faith, we believe in God’s unwavering love and commitment to the covenant. “I will take you as My own people, and I will be your God.” (Exodus 6:7) The last words in the Gospel of Matthew are a promise of loyalty from Jesus to His disciples and to each of us: “And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age.” (Matthew 28:20) How, then, do we cultivate loyalty in our relationships with each other and our God? Ruth provides a simple yet profound answer. We stick around. We endure the bad times and celebrate the good ones. And, most of all, we draw strength from knowing we can weather every storm because God will always remain faithful to His promises. Loyalty in Action: Yogi Berra said, “When you’re part of a team, you stand up for your teammates. Your loyalty is for them. You protect them through good and bad, because they’d do the same for you.” Being a “team player” requires cooperation, mutual support, resilience, and a willingness to forgive when we let each other down. Assess your capability as a team player. How might you cultivate loyalty and encourage it among those with whom you associate?
