S S O T “T S ”

In the gospel reading for this Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time, Jesus proposes another parable for his disciples: “The kingdom of heaven may be likened to a man who sowed good seed in his field. While everyone was asleep his enemy came and sowed weeds all through the wheat, and then went off” (Ma hew 13:24). The gospel is a challenge to remain faithful and enthusias c about doing God’s work even when we are faced with daun ng challenges. The parable is also an encouragement to us not to give up hope when it seems that even our best efforts are not bearing the fruit and reward for which he had worked. This parable invites us to reflect upon how God’s kingdom will be established and the manner in which we respond to God’s ac on in our lives so that we serve to build up God’s kingdom. This parable of Jesus highlights that there are always struggles in establishing God’s kingdom in this world and in our response to God’s ac on in our lives. God is always pa ent and tolerant; it is our call to be both pa ent with the challenges that come our way and to be tolerant with one another as we work out our own redemp on through the power of God’s grace. At first glance it would appear that the ill will of the enemy has undone the good work of the farmer plan ng his crop by sowing weeds amidst his hoped for yield of wheat. But the parable con nues and shows us that even an enemy, stepped in ill inten ons, cannot undo the will of God or ul mately thwart the efforts of the pa ent farmer who has the gi of wisdom and is able to discern God’s purposes. The farmer is not so hasty that he tears up the wheat in order to destroy the weeds: “Let them grow together un l harvest; then at harvest me I will say to the harvesters, ‘First collect the weeds and e them in bundles for burning; but gather the wheat into my barn” (Ma hew 13:30). To be a disciple of the Lord is to be confident and hopeful. Good can be found even amidst the some mes deep heartache that we face. Some mes we can be too quick to declare our work and our lot in life failure or even drudgery. But God’s grace is always at work and it o en takes the passage of me for us to appreciate how faithfully God has been working on our behalf. We can be beset by difficul es and disappointments and feel that God’s ac on is

Pastor’s Message (...continued from Page 4)

somehow not part of our lives; though we seek to plant so as to bring about a harvest that is a gi to the Lord and a benefit to those whom we love, our good inten ons can be choked off through our own weakness or through rela onships that go awry. But even in the midst of difficulty, and some mes because of them, we come to understand our complete dependence upon God and we learn the gi of pa ence in discerning his will and understanding his purposes. The Book of Wisdom counsels us to remember that the source of our strength comes from God and that God himself teaches us this truth: “And you taught your people, by these deeds, that those who are just must be kind; and you gave your children good ground for hope that you would permit repentance for their sins” (Wisdom 12:19). God always promises us the grace of a new beginning. That requires that we are willing to turn away from the past and our sinfulness in order to make a new beginning of goodness with our hearts devoted to the purposes of God through following his Son, Jesus Christ, in the power of the Holy Spirit. As we rely upon God’s mercy we must always temper jus ce with mercy. In his Le er to the Romans, Saint Paul writes: “The Spirit comes to the aid of our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes with inexpressible groanings” (Romans 8:26). We can be distracted by things that are not important, that are illusory, or not of las ng value. The gi s of the Holy Spirit assists us in making wise decisions that leads to closer friendship with the Lord Jesus in fidelity to the will of the Father. We rely upon the ac on of the Holy Spirit in order to keep our hearts in line with what God wants for us: “And the one who searches hearts knows what is the inten on of the Spirit, because he intercedes for the holy ones according to God’s will” (Romans 8:27). Our weaknesses, imperfec ons, and even our sinfulness can never keep us from living in friendship with God. Even the weeds of discouragement and despair that spring up amidst all of the good in our lives and in our hearts are no match for the Holy Spirit. If we understand that our weakness is a reason for us to completely depend upon God’s mercy and to trust in the power of the Holy Spirit to guide us then weakness, imperfec on, and sinfulness can lead us to embrace the power of the cross and repentance so that we are able to change our lives and our hearts by coopera ng with God’s purposes. Only the power of the Holy Spirit gives us the wisdom to make sense out of our lives

Sincerely in Christ,

Monsignor T. Mark Condon Pastor

and experience and to see them as connected to our rela onship with God. When we are with the Lord Jesus, we can find the peace that gives us the strength to serve him and care for those who need us. There might not always be a vaca on away for all of us but the Lord is always wai ng to give us rest. One of the great gi s we have as Catholics is the presence of the Lord Jesus Christ in the Most Blessed Sacrament. We can always come before the Lord in the Blessed Sacrament and be refreshed and renewed. When we feel over burdened and just at the end of our pa ence, we can stop into church for a moment and pray before the Blessed Sacrament that is our pledge of unity with the Lord and our promise of eternal life. The call of the gospel this week is never to give up hope in the power of God’s purposes or in the ul mate triumph of his will in our lives to lead us toward what is good.

Thank you for your generosity in our maintenance collec ons over the past year. As you can see, our parish buildings and grounds are con nually being repaired and improved as much as we are able to do at a me. A parish with as many buildings as we have must con nually seek to stay on top of maintenance concerns. Thank you to all of those who have taken no ce of improvements to our parish buildings that serve to enhance the beauty of our parish buildings and give proper care to their upkeep. Thank you for helping to support the care of our parish buildings. Just this past week the air condi oning condenser in the parish offices went to its rest and had to be replaced. The maintenance collec on helps us to a end to these never ending repairs. Thank you for your generosity!

T G As always, I thank you for your generosity to our parish. During the Summer we don’t like to think about a lot of things . . . especially finances. Thank you for your con nued goodness in suppor ng our parish through your faithfulness to the Sunday collec on. Please know that your support is much appreciated.

St. Vincent’s Nursing Home

Volunteers Needed CARE...to love someone and

to provide what the person needs.

If you have that persistent yearning that you would like to do something special with your life, please contact Sister June at the Volunteer Office at St. Vincent’s Nursing Home in Cedar Grove, NJ. You do not have to possess a special talent. In fact, your interest in another human being already speaks volumes about you. The residents may need you to take them to Mass in the chapel, or bring them to an activity. You may want to read to someone or simply talk. Please consider sharing your good spirit with the residents of St. Vincent’s Nursing Home and Rehab Center. The joy within you will tell you that you are doing a great thing. Contact Sister June Morrissey at 973-754-4831.
