We have arrived at the great feast of Pentecost. The Easter season ends today and the Paschal Candle that has stood in prominence during the fi y days of Easter now returns to its place near the bap smal font. A er fi y days of celebra ng the resurrec on of Jesus Christ from the dead we pray for the gi of the Holy Spirit so that we may live as disciples commi ed to remaining close to the Lord Jesus Christ who gives us the gi of eternal life. Jesus Christ, crucified, risen from the dead, ascended to the right hand of the Father, where he is seated in glory, now sends forth the gi s of the Holy Spirit so that the Church he founded is equipped for every good work and is able to lead all people to salva on. Today we celebrate the sending of the Holy Spirit upon the apostles, the Spirit that gave birth to the Church that Jesus Christ founded. On the feast
of Pentecost we celebrate the Spirit of truth who guides the Church so that we are always consecrated to the gospel of Jesus Christ. In his homily for the Solemnity of Pentecost in 2015, our Holy Father, Pope Francis noted:
The Holy Spirit teaches us: he is the Interior Master. He guides us along the right path, through life’s challenges. He teaches us the path, the way. In the early mes of the Church, Chris anity was called ‘the way’ (cf. Acts 9:2), and Jesus himself is the Way. The Holy Spirit teaches us to follow him, to walk in his footprints. More than a master of doctrine, the Holy Spirit is a master of life. And he surely takes part in life as well as in knowledge, but within the broadest and most harmonious horizons of Chris an existence.
On this great feast of Pentecost, we pray that in fidelity to the Holy Spirit who dwells in our hearts that we may always be faithful to the way that the Lord Jesus marks out for us in fidelity to the will of the Father. The Holy Spirit who dwells in our hearts, with his seven-fold of gi s of wisdom, understanding, right judgment, courage, knowledge, reverence, and wonder and awe gives us the assurance that we can always be close to the Lord and have access to the divine life that Jesus won for us through his death and resurrec on. In 2009 Benedict XVI said of Pentecost:
Today the Church throughout the world is reliving the Solemnity of Pentecost, the mystery of her birth, her own ‘Bap sm’ in the Holy Spirit (cf. Acts 1:5) which occurred in Jerusalem 50 days a er Easter, precisely on the Jewish Feast of Pentecost. The Risen Jesus had told his disciples: ‘Stay in the city, un l you are clothed with power from on high’ (Lk 24:49). This actually happened in the Upper Room, while they were all gathered in prayer with Mary, the Virgin Mother. As we read in the Acts of the Apostles, that place was suddenly filled with the rush of a mighty wind and tongues as fire se led on each one of those present. The Apostles then went out

Pastor’s Message (...continued from Page 4)
and began to proclaim in different languages that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, dead and risen (cf. Acts 2:1-4). The Holy Spirit, who with the Father and the Son, created the universe, who guided the People of Israel through history and spoke through the Prophets, who in the fullness of me cooperated in our redemp on, came down at Pentecost upon the nascent Church and made her missionary, sending her out to proclaim to all peoples the victory of divine love over sin and death.
The Holy Spirit is the soul of the Church. Without him what would she be reduced to? She would certainly be an important movement in history, a complex and solid social ins tu on, perhaps a sort of humanitarian agency. And to tell the truth she is considered such by those who do not see her from a perspec ve of faith. Yet, the reality is that in her true nature and also in her authen c presence in history, the Church is ceaselessly formed and guided by the Spirit of her Lord. She is a living body, whose vitality is, precisely, the fruit of the invisible divine Spirit.
On this feast of Pentecost we pray that we are always guided by the Holy Spirit so that we are faithful to Jesus Christ and to the will of the Father. Each of us has a special role to carry out in the Church, all of us have a voca on to serve in virtue of our bap sm. Saint Paul tells us in his first Le er to the Corinthians: “As a body is one though it has many parts, and all the parts of the body, though many, are one body so also Christ. For in one Spirit we are all bap zed in one body, whether Jews or Greeks, slaves or free persons, and we were all given to drink of one Spirit” (1 Corinthians 12:12-13). May the gi s of the Holy Spirit renew our hearts and help us to build up the Body of Christ, the Church.
T P S What’s with that long hymn? Well, it is called the “Sequence.” There are about five sequences in the liturgical year, long stanzas of poetry that emphasize the importance of the feast being celebrated and expanding on the theology and meaning of the feast being celebrated; there are four such sequences for individual feasts: Easter, Pentecost, the Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ (Corpus Chris ), and Our Lady of Sorrows (Feast, September 15th). Today, as we sing the sequences we pray that the gi s of the Spirit will increase in our hearts.

the Blessed Virgin Mary the Mother of the Church be inscribed in the Roman Calendar on the Monday a er the Solemnity of Pentecost as an annual feast. This new Obligatory Memorial takes precedence over other Memorials of Saints that are celebrated on the Monday following Pentecost. Thus, this year, May 21st, the Memorial of Saint Christopher Magallanes, Priest and Companions, Martyrs, is superseded by the Memorial of the Blessed Virgin Mary Mother of the Church. The Ora ons, Preface, and An phons of Holy Mass for the Memorial of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church may be found in the Roman Missal under heading for Vo ve Masses for the Blessed Virgin Mary (10.B): Our Lady, Mother of the Church. The readings for the Liturgy of the Word are as follows: Reading I: Genesis 3:9; 15-20 or Acts of the Apostles 1: 12-24 Psalm 86 (87) 1-2, 3, 5, 6-7 “Glorious things are told of you, O city of God” Gospel: John 19: 25-34 As the Solemnity of Pentecost approaches we gather together with the Blessed Virgin Mary and the apostles in the Upper Room and we pray for a new outpouring of the Holy Spirit upon the Church, especially upon our local Church of Paterson. With every good wish and a prayer for the Lord’s blessing, I am Sincerely yours in Christ, Most Reverend Arthur J. Serratelli, S.T.D., S.S.L., D.D. Bishop of Paterson

Not only do people come away from the experience knowing more about faith, they come away with a sense that they belong to a great community of believers with whom they can share and grow in their faith, hope and love. Cursillo is an experience that can give you a renewed understanding of our faith. Its goal is to make faith alive for those who participate in this course. If you are looking for such an experience, there are dates available for both women and men.

Volunteers Needed St. Vincent’s Nursing Home & Rehab Center is set quietly away on E. Lindsley Road in Cedar Grove. The setting is a fitting atmosphere to care for wonderful human beings who are in need of assistance in their daily lives. The excellent rehabilitation program offers therapy to restore quality of life to those who have suffered a stroke or physical injury.
In addition to the employees of St. Vincent’s, the lives of the residents are touched by the kindness of volunteers. These generous and caring people transport residents back and forth to Mass and to a myriad of activities. In some cases, a volunteer may be someone’s sole visitor. Volunteers allow a resident to communicate and laugh with others, be present for special musical activities, play bingo or create a handmade poncho or an individual flower garden. In order to make these wonderful opportunities available to residents, volunteers are necessary to transport an individual and chat along the way.
If you are interested, please call Sr. June at 973-754-4831. You will never dream of how important you can be to others.
