A Message from Father Charles Fink Page 3 February 8, 2015
My dear parish family, First, I want to thank all of you who pledged or contributed to this year’s Catholic Ministries Appeal. It’s way too early to know whether or not we’ll make our parish goal, but I’m very grateful to those of you who are helping us on our way. And if any of you who haven’t pledged or contributed have a change of heart, you can pick up a CMA envelope in church or at the rectory and use it to make a contribution. You can also call the Appeal office at 516-379-5210 ext. 2 for more information about giving. Thanks again for your support. Second, a reminder that Lent is just around the corner, less than two weeks away; Ash Wednesday is February 18. I’m happy to tell you that a good friend of mine, a talented musi-cian and zealous Catholic layman, Al Barbarino, will be coming to Our Lady of the Snow in early March to offer us what I’m confident will be an enjoyable and inspiring parish mission. You’ll be hearing more about this in the near future. Also this Lent we’ll be praying the Stations of the Cross on Friday evenings at 7:30 in the Mother Church, where we’re fortunate to have beautiful depictions of the fourteen Sta-tions. It’s possible you never even noticed them. It’s even possible some of you may not be familiar with this beautiful, traditional devotion that dates back to the time of St. Francis of Assisi in the Middle Ages. Especially if you’ve never prayed the Stations, join us one or more Fridays nights this Lent. Finally, with Lent so close at hand, I’d recommend you start now giving some thought as to how you’ll make this Lent fruitful. It’s customary to give up something that you’re particularly fond of for Lent: as a sacrifice, as an expression of solidarity with the poor and suffering, as a means of saving some money that can be given to the poor or a favorite charity, and as self-discipline and exercise for out of shape souls. You might also want to do something positive in the way of spiritual exercise, like praying a bit more during Lent, attending extra Masses or other parish services, maybe read-ing a good religious book or watching a good religious video series like the ones put out by Fr. Robert Barron. We’re only given a very limited number of Lents in our lifetime. How easy it is to waste them, letting them slip by with little effort to take advantage of the graces of the sea-son. Let’s together make this a fruitful Lent, and let’s start thinking now about how we’ll do that. With love and prayers, Fr. Charles Fink

Believing with Joy! Stewardship - A Way of Life
JESUS AND PRAYER
“Rising very early before dawn, he left
and went off to a deserted place, where he prayed.”
There are scores of instances in the Four Gospels which indicate Jesus praying. He often would go off alone to pray, but He
also prayed with others publicly; He prayed before He made a choice, before He healed someone, and He was just as
likely to pray after as well. St. Paul exhorts us to “pray constantly,
never ceasing.” Jesus, perhaps more than any other fulfilled this admonition. He
provides to us the perfect example of both how we should pray and in what ways.
Prayer is at the foundation of our faith; it is at the core of a stewardship way of life. Developing an ongoing, consistent, and
active prayer life is paramount for each of us.
Prayer not only indicates our constant awareness of God, but it enhances our
lives, and is an indication of our total trust in God. Trust in God is also an important facet of stewardship. Knowing that we are
in God’s hands and in His care is what strengthens us and allows us to make the commitment Jesus has asked us to make. One of Jesus’ final prayers is one which
offers us the suggestion of how we need to approach life: “Father, into thy hands I
commend my spirit.”
This week’s opportunity to pray the rosary with fellow parishioners is on
Wednesday, February 11 at 4:45 in the Mother Church. Please join us.
Pope Francis and Prayer "Prayer works wonders, but we have to believe! I think we can make a beautiful prayer ... and tell Him today, all day
long, 'Lord, I believe, help my unbelief' ... and when people ask, ask us to pray for the many people who suffer in wars, all refugees, all of these dramas that exist right now, pray,
but with your heart to the Lord: 'Do it!', but tell Him: 'Lord, I believe. Help my unbelief 'that is also in my prayers. Let
us do this today. " (May 20 , 2013)

KNOWING OUR FAITH III. JESUS CHRIST: LOVE INCARNATE
In this school of love, our life on earth, we have an incomparable teacher, Jesus Christ. In Him we see what God is like, what we are meant to be, and what true love is. The reason He is the teacher par excellence is that He is what He teaches. He is God incarnate. He is perfectly human. He is love in thought, word, and deed. We, therefore, do ourselves an inestimable service when we get to know Him as well as we can. We ought to be steeped in the gospels, as in the rest of scripture. St. Jerome famously said that “Ignorance of scripture is ignorance of Christ.” Even if Jerome overstated the case, and that is a big if, it is certainly true that knowledge of scripture will deepen our knowledge of Christ, and if we want to know Him as well as we can, it is to our advantage to read, study, meditate on, and pray with God’s great love letter to humanity, which is the Bible. It is true that there are many passages in the Bible that seem anything but loving, but we must keep in mind that God was dealing with some awfully way-ward children, and still is. He would have liked to enter into a kind of marriage with them, but all they ever seemed to think about was worldly affairs and other lovers. It is small wonder that in their eyes God often appeared jealous and ty-rannical. The real wonder is that He was so in love with them that He did not care even when they occasionally painted a pretty unattractive picture of Him.
It is part of His humility that God permits His word to be written in the words of imperfect people. Just so long as what it essential gets across to make us the lovers He wants us to be, He does not mind that there is a good bit of chaff amidst the wheat, even in His love letter, the Bible.
And besides, He gives us the Church to guide us in our interpretation of scripture, to make sure we do not distort His message in anything we really need to know. The Church is another of God’s gifts to His children. Like His children of old, however, we too often see tyranny where we ought to see love

to our food pantry drop drastically. Due to
these tough economic times, we are helping
an increased number of our neighbors in

items, but especially: pasta sauce, cookies,
crackers, boxed milk, canned meats, tuna,
mayonnaise, tea, coffee, all juices, cereal,
pancake mix and syrup, paper towels, laun-
dry detergent, baby wipes, chili, stew, chick-

be dropped off at the outreach office Mon-
day—Thursday 10AM—1PM or in the food
bin outside the pantry door in the foyer of
the large church before or after every Mass.
Parish Outreach News THANK YOU WONDERFUL PARISH FAMILY FOR YOUR GENEROSITY AND SUPPORT
Wow!! We were hundreds of thousands of marchers in solidarity & camaraderie @ the 42nd “March for Life in Washington, DC”. 75% were young people, (our hope for the future) yet as usual the media ignored us; but we will not go away or give up because we remember well the words of Mother Teresa: “We don’t need to be successful, just faithful”. We will con nue to be faithful and leave the cause in God’s hands. We were 37 marchers on the bus - the temperature was about 37 degrees, but windy. We thank God for a great bus driver who kept us safe without any accidents or mishaps. We felt our trip was very frui ul – we did all that we hoped to do. We met Bishop Murphy & the RVC diocesan group. We witnessed to the people of Washington; we lobbied at Senators Schumer & Gillibrand’s offices; we visited Representa ves Lee Zeldin & Peter King and we supported and encouraged one another. We were filled with mixed emo ons: sad-ness for the over 55 million pre-born lives lost since Roe vs. Wade in the US & the countless women exploited, coerced, deceived, broken and oppressed into having an abor on; yet we were energized (like a vitamin B-12 shot) and ready to con nue to work for respect for ALL life from con-cep on to natural death. We are commi ed to working diligently in trying to prevent euthanasia, assisted suicide, embryonic stem cell research and cloning from becoming legal.

WHAT YOU MISSED
On January 22, our parish had its annual Evening of Social Justice Awareness. It was a great night to reflect on our Catholic Social Teachings and to see how our fellow parishioners and neighbors are living out their Christian call to make this world a place of true justice. Two guest speakers told their stories of faith and of their journey to share their faith. Loic Moussoh a col-lege student shared his experience of the being in the midst of unrest in the Ivory Coast, and how his faith helped him then and how he works now to share his faith with others at college and in our parish as a catechist. Deacon Ed Karen gave a beautiful account of his mission trip to the Do-minican Republic. At first, Deacon Ed thought that he was bringing something to the people of the Dominican Republic but realized how much more he has received. He spoke of the joy and fervent faith of the people who have so little but gives so much.
