Thanks for your kind thoughts and prayers for my back problem these past few weeks. The diagnosis is lumbar stenosis, which has its origin in a 1975 back surgery. Arthritis has taken over my lower back causing the present pain and immobility. (It seems that as soon as I turned 75 in September, my body let me know that I am not as young as I used to be!). For the past two weeks I have been doctoring almost every other day to get back into shape, and slowly but surely, I am recovering. Again, thanks for the prayers and good wishes.

It is hard to believe that we are coming up to November. Each year, we begin the November church calendar with two significant celebrations. November 1 is the Feast of All Saints, a holy day of obligation. This is the feast on which we recall all those women and men of every age who live with God in heaven, especially those who do not have a designated feast day in the church calendar. In other words, the myriads of good people down through the ages of our church who led good, holy, Christian lives, and, today, enjoy eternal happiness in heaven. On this feast day, I always think of my holy, faithful parents and grandparents and other “ancestors in the faith” who, I believe, rank among our un-named saints. Who are the un-named saints in your family?

November 2 is the Commemoration of All Souls. On this day, we remember all those who have died and who are still awaiting entrance into the fullness of God’s kingdom - the “souls in purgatory.” We remember them at Masses celebrated during the month of November and special “All Souls” Masses celebrated throughout the year. The special envelopes in your packet for this day will be placed near the tabernacle all during November, and the names you have recorded on these envelopes will be remembered at each Mass. Also, near the Sacred Heart Chapel, you will find a memorial book in which you can write the names of friends and relatives who have died, especially those who died in the past twelve months. They will also be remembered at our November Masses.

Next weekend, we will take up the annual collection for The Catholic University of America – the official university of the United States Conference of Bishops. (It happens to be my alma mater). There is a special envelope in your packet for this collection, which can be used anytime in the next four weeks.

Next Sunday, being the first Sunday of the month, is coffee and donuts Sunday in the Music Room after all morning Masses. May Jesus bless you and Our Lady of Victory watch over you.

SUNDAY 10/28/18 OUR LADY OF VICTORY PAGE 2

Pray for the canonization of our founder, Venerable Nelson Baker

Sacrament of Baptism: Our Parish offers a special Pre-Baptism preparation program for parents who desire to share their faith with their children. Parents-to-be must attend this class prior to the birth of their child. Baptisms are usually scheduled two times each month. Call the Rectory to register for classes. Godparents must be Confirmed and practicing Catholics. Non-parishioners are required to have a Letter of Recommendation to serve as a sponsor.

Sacrament of Marriage:

To be married in the Basilica, you must be an active parishioner for at least 9 months prior to setting a date. Engaged couples should contact the pastor before making other wedding arrangements. Couples are required to attend a Pre-Cana Conference, or equivalent pre-marriage preparation program.

Letters of Recommendation:

Recommendations to act as sponsors for Baptism or Confirmation can be issued only to registered members of Our Lady of Victory Parish who have received the Sacrament of Confirmation, attend Mass and receive Holy Communion regularly, have their children attending a Catholic school or Religious Education class. If married, the marriage must be in conformity with the regulations of the Catholic Church.

Devotions:

Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament begins immediately after the 12:10 p.m. Mass in the Basilica on Fridays and concludes with Benediction at 5:00 p.m.

First Friday:

On the eve of the First Friday of each month there are confessions from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. Mass is celebrated at 7:30 p.m. on First Friday.

Care of the Sick:

Please notify the rectory office for a visit to any family member who is sick, in the hospital or confined to home. Regular home Communion visits are usually on the First Friday of the month by a priest, deacon, or minister of the Eucharist.

Tours:

To schedule a tour of Our Lady of Victory Basilica, please contact Dianne Bosinski, Tours & Basilica Programs by email at [email protected] or by phone at (716) 828-9424.

Summary of the Readings Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time

The prophet Jeremiah prophesies the end of the Babylonian exile. He describes how the weak and sorrowful people now return with joy. These are the scattered people of God: the blind and the lame, the mothers and pregnant women. They shall be led along an easy road so that no one will stumble. The Lord’s kindness and mercy are on all these weak and broken people.

Here and in Psalm 126 we find the most lovely poetic images of God’s love and care for us. “Those that sow in tears / shall reap rejoicing. Although they go forth weeping, / carrying the seed to be sown, / they shall come back rejoicing, / carrying their sheaves” (Psalm 126:5–6). Although God had to punish Israel for their many sins, God never forgot them, scattered as they were, and brings them all back to the land of their ancestors, there to flourish and be joyful again. We can see in this the hope and the promise of our own redemption, gathered from the far corners of the earth into the great banquet of God. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

The highlight of the evening, once again hosted by Mary Alice Demler, news anchor at WGRZ-TV Channel 2, is the presentation of the Father Baker Service to Youth Awards, annual awards that are given annually to individuals who exemplify the values and dedication of Venerable Nelson Baker, founder of the OLV Institutions. This year’s recipients are Ronald Thaler and Douglas Coleman. In addition to these awards, we will also pay tribute to the 110th anniversary of the opening of the OLV Infant Home. To purchase event tickets, Cayman Raffle tickets, or to make a donation, please contact Melanie Brem at 716-828-9289 or online at www.FriendsOfFatherBaker.org.

RCIA

The program for adults who wish to become Catholic or Fully Initiated Catholic (RCIA), is beginning Sunday, November 18. If you or someone you know wishes to become Catholic or fully initiated, please have them call or email Father Sam at 716-828-9428 or [email protected]. Please note: Father Sam’s computer deleted all of his contacts, so if you were expecting a call from him, please re-contact him, as he no longer has your information.

Catholic Cemetery Moment

If you are considering cremation, it is well to discuss your choice with your family, your parish priest or the Diocesan Catholic Cemetery Office. While cremation is allowed, there are certain preferences and stipulations. The cremated remains of a body must be buried or entombed, preferably in a Catholic Cemetery. The Church does not allow scattering cremated remains, dividing cremated remains or keeping cremated remains at home.

Vocation Thought Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time

When Jesus healed the blind man, Bartimaeus, his eyesight wasn't ony restored, but also his ability to see and appreciate God’s love. How is God calling you to bring light to those in darkness? If God is calling you to a Church vocation, call Father Andrew Lauricella at 716-847-5535. Check out the “Priest of the Month” stories at www.buffalovocations.org.
