Ad Orientem Toward The East

Since Vatican II (1962-1965) for over 50 years Mass has been celebrated predominantly with the Priest facing the people. However, prior to Vatican II the Mass was celebrated for over 1900 years

with the Priest and the people facing the same direction, namely to the East. Following Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, Cardinal Sarah, the Prefect for the Congregation for the Divine Liturgy, has repeatedly called for a return to ad orientem worship - in which the priest and the people face together in the same direction toward the front of the church for those parts of the Mass which are addressed directly to God. Cardinal Sarah has asked priest to implement ad orientem worship as soon as possible...for this is an act of true renewal and “is something good for the Church and the people of God.” Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, Spirit of the Liturgy (Chapter 3): “On the other hand, a common turning to the East during the Eucharistic Prayer remains essential. This is not a case of something accidental, but of what is essential. Looking at the priest has no importance. What matters is looking together at the Lord. It is not now a question of dialogue, but of common worship, of setting off toward the One who is to come. What corresponds with the reality of what is happening is not a closed circle, but the common movement forward expressed in a common direction for prayer.” First Friday weekday Masses will be celebrated ad orientem, that is, the priest will be facing in the same direction as the people for the prayers of the Mass that are directly addressed to the Lord. All other weekday Masses and all weekend Masses will be celebrated as we normally do with the Priest facing the people.

From the Desk of Father Ed: Dear Parishioners, Once again we have returned to the liturgical season of Ordinary Time. We celebrated the Easter Season for 50-days, which ended on the eve of Pentecost Sunday completing the Paschal Mystery. For 50-days we celebrated the event of Jesus’ Resurrection from the dead. This past Sunday we focused on the gift of the Holy Spirit, the Third Person of the Blessed Trinity, given to the Apostles and the whole Church so that we can be sanctified and share in the very life of God. God has given us a share in His very life through Jesus’ Passion, Death, Resurrection and the gift of the Holy Spirit. This weekend we celebrate the Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity. We are invited to gaze into the mystery of the inner life of God and discover the Three Persons of the Blessed Trinity, The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. All Worship, honor, glory, and praise is due to the Three Persons equally. We can distinguish them by their relationship to one another. The Father is ungenerated and the First Person. The Second Person, the Word or Logos, is generated from the Father before all time began (never a time when the Son was not). The Third Person, the Holy Spirit proceeds from the Father and the Son, again before all time began. The Father has sent His Son, Jesus, to save us from sin and death. The Son has sent us the gift of the Holy Spirit that we can share in the inner life of the Blessed Trinity and call God our Father until the day we see Him face to face in the Kingdom of Heaven. Parish Life: We send our best wishes and prayers to our Music Minister, Margaret Moeckel and her husband John, they will be retiring from the parish ministry after Deacon Dulibber’s Mass of Thanksgiving. Margaret and John wish to be able to spend more time with their family. Margaret has been playing the organ and cantoring here in the parish for 26 years. Please keep Margaret and John and their family in your prayers. During the summer months we will be using several different organists to help us out until our new Music Minister, Benjamin Yates starts in late August. Benjamin has been cantoring at our 9:30 am Family Mass for about a year and has been substituting for Margaret on occasion. Be sure to mark you calendars for Sunday, June 3rd, the Solemnity of Corpus Christi, the day we celebrate the Body and Blood of Jesus. This year after the 11:00 am Sunday Mass we will have a short procession outside (weather permitting) with the Blessed Sacrament. After the procession there will be a pot-luck luncheon in the pavilion. Be sure to join us. Feel free to bring a covered dish. Our Lady Queen of Peace, pray for us, Father Ed, Pastor
