WE CREATE AND NURTURE BRANDS
This past year has been full of events; global and local, political and societal, moments of courage and great show of human spirit, inventions that excited, distracted and simplified our lives. We are living in exciting, extraordinary times and are entering a new world. Change, development and evolution have happened and are happening everywhere we look, whether we like it or not. Ideas are born from inspirations and inspirations can come from anywhere, in every detail, every event or object, when looking broader, closer and simply in a different light.
Here we stop to reflect, share with you a brief snapshot of the world as we have experienced it this past year. We hope that by looking, really seeing, we have a better, bolder understanding of what it takes to live in today’s world. 2013 holds a world of endless opportunity and possibility and we intend that this book can create the inspirations, thoughts and directions you need
to behold them… or you can come to us.

Humanised Technology
We are using the intelligence of technology to humanise and transform our lives. We are integrating the world we have created into what and who we are, and what we need. Rick Smolan and Jennifer Erwitt’s magnificent book ‘The Changing Face of Human Data’ beautifully explores the world of big data and how it’s challenging and helping our lives.

A Factory at Your Fingertips
Plastic, metal, ceramic and even chocolate can now be printed, as if being beamed into your home as a lamp, cup or snack. With 3D printers we will soon have the power to create what we want to create. We will all be makers of the things we need, want and desire.

Curiosity
The fuel for this innovation is the drive to take risks, the ambition to go beyond what we have seen, endeavouring to wonder and explore the unknown unknowns and not just the known unknowns.

Brand Humanity
‘I am made of every day you don’t see.’ Asics 2012 Campaign
This year we have seen brands begin to realise the importance of re-connecting with and speaking to the human spirit. What real people value is real value; this is achieved by authentic, trustworthy bonds and communication.

Can you cover your face in make-up for fun?
Could you roll on your side down a hill?
When was the last time you made a funny face?
Made an animal noise?
Spoke in a made up language?
Or looked at life through the eyes of a child?

Getting Under the Skin
Understanding human nature takes time and careful observation. Too often we forget the context. We forget to show the sensibility, time and empathy needed to see people for who they really are. Through knowledge and experience, deeper connections can be formed. The photographer Todd Selby’s unique approach to his subjects is testament to this.

A new wave of innovation is born and it’s called Jugaard - named after the Hindi word meaning ‘improvised solution created from ingenuity & cleverness’. Brands are beginning to acknowledge the needs of the world and all of the people within it, making innovation available to everyone regardless of economic status.

Future Planning
Our futures, whether we are talking about our cities, buildings or families, would all be better off if we were to think about the future and the consequences of our actions. Istanbul-O-Matic, the project of Cem Kozar and Işıl Ünal (PATTU Architecture) at the Istanbul Design Biennale, captures this notion perfectly as they internally criticise the transformation of Istanbul.

Finding Depth in the Shallows
Endeavouring to question and search to find depth in places once perceived flat is a skill in which design specialises. These carpets are wonderful examples of that skill.
Functional Beauty
The facade of the Al Bahar Towers in Abu Dhabi is a testament to the beauty found when form aligns with function. In this part of the world, keeping cool can be a challenge, this intricate design responds to the sun, the result is a carbon emission saving of 1,750 tons per year.

Being able to reinvent and understand the importance of tradition, and at the same time, progress in the world, is about creating together, building trust and collaboration.

Collaborative
Collaboration is not something which just happens, it is an attention to detail, a feeling, a thought. When the right people collaborate with each other the effect can be very powerful and add value to all involved, taking products, companies or brands beyond the short term.

Preconceptions are a part of how and who we are, but perhaps they shouldn’t be. This photo is not contemporary, yet as soon as we see it we have words, thoughts and actions loaded and ready to fire into the air of opinion. We can try to understand and strive to overcome our initial thoughts, and to see things as they really are.
