PRIMARY ETHICS VOLUNTEER TEACHERS NEEDED TO MEET RISING DEMANDS…”Think about

it!”

Once a week, for the past four years, I have had the privilege of entering the classrooms of Greenwich

Public School as a volunteer primary ethics teacher. There, I have led children through discussions of a

broad range of age-appropriate ethical issues such as fairness, friendship, being an ethical consumer and

animal rights. We also cover topics such as logic and reasoning and the structure of arguments. Topics

are introduced to the children through narrative and role-play, and it is my role to facilitate a “community

of enquiry” in which the children identify the issues and form their own opinions while engaging and

responding to other perspectives. Teaching the kids over a few years has allowed me to see them develop

their thinking and reasoning skills as well as how to engage in a thoughtful and respectful discussion.

Watching them grow up physically and cognitively has been absolute delight!

At least 30 minutes is set aside each week for special religious or ethics education in NSW public

schools. Ethics is taught by volunteer teachers, mostly parents, using lesson resources written and

provided by Primary Ethics. At Greenwich, ethics is becoming increasingly popular, with 172 students

enrolled in 10 classes each week, likely to increase to least 12 classes in 2020. Becoming an ethics teacher

involves a two-day workshop and online training modules which include child protection awareness and

classroom management. All teachers must have criminal record and working with children checks.

Teaching ethics is one of the most rewarding things that I do; and has been a wonderful way to actively

participate with my children and their peers at school.

We need more volunteers to keep the ethics programme alive and healthy at Greenwich, not only to

meet the increasing demand, but also as parents like me with older children will likely step down as they

graduate to high school. Primary ethics has recently introduced more flexibility for volunteer teachers, such

as “Class Share” for those who can’t commit every week. For more information about Primary Ethics,

including what we do, how to support the programme and to join our wonderful team of teachers, please

visit the website: www.primaryethics.com.au
