Walking is one of the bestexercises for you: It’s low-impact,so it’s easy on your joints, and itcan be done almost anywhere. Many people use a pedometer, adevice that counts steps. Here aresome ways a pedometer canhelp you:
Easy to use. The simplest, leastexpensive pedometers only countsteps, which is all you need toknow to begin tracking youractivity. Just clip the pedometeron your waistband or belt and goabout your day. More expensivemodels, which can measure heartrate, calories burned, and distancewalked, are also available.
Increases awareness. Manypeople have no idea how often—or little— they move during theday. A pedometer lets you knowhow many steps you take on atypical day and how active youare. The daily average for olderadults ranges from 2,000 to9,000 steps.
Reminds you to move. Now thatyou know your numbers, set agoal. Start by walking just 500 or1,000 extra steps per day. Look forsmall opportunities to walk more, such as taking a longer routethrough a store. By instantlyshowing you how much you arewalking, a pedometer canmotivate you to keep moving.

To Live Long, Just Be Happy; Bea Hirsh Says It’s asSimple as That...
By Jim Goodson
Bea Hirsh thinks the key to living a long life is simple: just be happy. Her husband Bernard readily agrees.
“Bea and I have never had a disagreement,” Bernard says. “I know youmay think that’s impossible for a couple that’s been married 38 years,
but with us, it’s true.”Bea turned 102 this past April and Bernard will hit the century mark thisJuly. “I like younger men.” They both laugh and Bernard replies that he
likes older women. This couple laughs a lot.
They met in 1987 shortly afterthe death of Bernard’s first wife.
“My wife and I had signed upto take a ‘couples tour’ of theOrient, but when my wife died, Ihad no one to go with,” Bernardsays. “Part of the deal was that fivecouples had to go on the tour. With me being newly single, thetour was in jeopardy and myfriends were faced with losingboth the trip and their deposits.
“These people were from LosAngeles and they knew Bea, whohad also lost her spouse. So theypaired us up. It was a 14-hourflight and Bea and I quickly got toknow each other. I carried herluggage and sat with herat meals.”
It was not, however, love at firstsight, Bea says. “We got along wellenough,” she says. “But thatwas it.”
To the grieving Bernard, however, it was a relationship
worth pursuing. “I got back toDallas (Bea lived in RanchoBernardo, north of San Diego)and, after a couple of months, invited her here for the Christmasholidays. We had a wonderfultime.”
Bea and Bernard
Bea Hirsh Cont.“She came back two months
later and I asked her to marry me.We were at Red Bryan’sSmokehouse. After she gulped hersandwich down, she said ‘yes.’ “
“What the heck,” Bea laughs. “Iliked Texas barbecue.”
Looking back, Bea thinks theircourtship was a success becauseneither of the two were anxiousabout being married. “We justenjoyed each other’s company,”she says. “And we still do.”
A Baltimore native, Bea is thedaughter of opera singer GeorgeCastelle, who sang with the NewYork Metropolitan Opera. Hermom, Virginia, was a concertpianist, and the Castelles trainedmany musicians from theirBaltimore home.
Her dad was also voiceprofessor at The Peabody Instituteand Bea attended The Park School;the family often traveled toAustria to attend what her fatherconsidered the world’s best operahouse.
Bea’s first husband was adentist and the couple lived inCumberland, Maryland. After shelost him, Bea moved to Californiato live with her aunt and uncle. InLos Angeles, she met and marriedan attorney who was executivedirector of ASCAP, a nonprofitagency that protected theintellectual property rights ofwriters and performers.
Bea and her new husband livedin Bel-Air on Rodeo Drive –“the
residential section,” Bea says, referring to the famous street’shigh-end shopping district. Sheregularly attended the AcademyAwards and their neighborsincluded Gregory Peck, RobertTaylor, Humphrey Bogart,Katherine Hepburn, and SpencerTracy.
“Doris Day was a child ridingaround on her bicycle,” Bea says.
Unfortunately, her secondhusband – a heavy smoker – diedof lung cancer.
By then, Bea was living inRancho Bernardo, which is whereshe was when friends mentioned atrip to the Orient with a mannamed Bernard.
It seems he was president of afamily business in Dallas. BernardHirsh owned Milliner’s SupplyCo., which sold materials used inthe fashion industry. The longtimefirm was located at 911 Elm Streetin the oldest building in Dallas.
Bernard Hirsh was also anattorney (The University of Texasat Austin) and, in 1939, was amember of the first group ofattorneys licensed by the State Barof Texas. He was also a significantreal estate investor in Dallas.
“But I liked that he had a senseof humor,” Bea says. They weremarried at Temple Emanu-el,where Bernard was soon to bepresident of the congregation.
Both Bernard and Bea havechildren from their previousmarriages.
Bea’s oldest son is a retiredattorney and a former SuperiorCourt Judge in California. Heryoungest is VP of a Los Angelesbank.
Bernard has three sons: oneran the family business, anotheris a custom jewelry designer, while the third is a retired socialworker who specialized inworking with the blind.
His daughter is a formerschool principal and currentHighland Park ISDadministrator.
The couple smile at eachother again. “Just be happy,”she says.
