THE 'NUDGE'By T . M. BAXTER

When ou r service men were sent to the far corners of the globeand Into every fore ign and remote nation of the world, little books ofinstructions were handed them, pointing out t h e p rope r c onduct a ndbehavior to be observed among the strange and different peoples theywould meet. These manuals of manners t ol d o f the customs, habits, taboos, and gave some ideas of the language and r i tua ls of the racesthe boys would mingle With .. . the advice, thus given, must have

proved very effective, judging from reports .Now t!le t r oops a re floWing back; daily they arrive by the thous

ands from the ends of the earth and how very welcome they are .Mostof the boys have bee n a br oa d s o long that it will take a little time toorient them to the new f ad s and favorites and some of t h e r ec en tjive lingo that has s pr ung up in their absence. However, there aresome among the lads who have the "gir l " all picked out and intend tobe married immediately on arrival home and a great majority of theother s a re going to be married pretty immediatelY whether they knowit o r not .

To these young service men. then, who wil l be about to enter intoa stranger s t at e t han any theY have been in so war, the following fewl i tt l e h in ts and bits of advice are offered. These admonit ions m ightalso serve as a sort of a "refresher course" to those new husbands whohave been away so long a nd m ay have forgot ten many of the do's anddont' s and some o f t he m or e intangible considerations of t he matr i monial sta te, and who may a lso l ike to re-familiarize themselves withthe nomenclature they will have t o grow accustomed to.

In the matter of the engagement r ing , if it is spoken of veryeestaticlY as "exquisite" or "adorable," it w il l b e on the da inty s ide;some f rac t ion of a caret. If in buying the th ing, you "wentfor a lung"which is a Runyon like way of saying $1,000.00 or so (how did Damonget in here anyway?) t.he stone then might be termed "beautiful" or"gorgeous." A n ~ ' r in g much mor e expensive t ha n t ha t would receivethe more sincere. if subdued. "just lovely," but a pure, white, threecarat job migllt call for the supreme accolade which would be just agasp and then silence.

This is, indeed, a different land ~ ' o u are going to find yourselvesi n, m y good fellows, and nothing will be more difficult of comprehension than th is s e lf - same language in which supe rlat ive s mean posit ive s and positives ca rry t r emendous weight , Cons ide r the weddingpresents: any small gift, like six colored ice tea glasses, will be pronounced "perfectly exquisite" or "absolutely adorable." you will discover, as you progress, that "adorable" and "exquisite" t the a ccentalways on th e first syllable of "exquisite") are useful a l l - P U l ' p o ~ ewords in de sc rib ing any smal l inexpens ive Il"ift o r p ur ch as e; f orexample-"I think those ash t ra y s a re the most 'ek's kWi-zit' I'veeverseen in a ll m y life; t e ll mewhe re i n t h e world did you get them?"

may only mean that the speaker is checking up t o f ind out i f t h eycame from Gimbel 's basement. .Sooner or later, but inevitabb, you unsuspecting benedicts

will be a sked to be pe rf e ct ly f r ank and give your candid opinionabout a new ha t or dress - " i t 's onh' home on approval, so I wantYOU to tell honestly, how you l ike it?" Remember this! ! . ' u ~ to r d i n a r ~ ' superlatives like, "Gee, I t hi nk i t' s swell" or "you lookbeautifur," or "that's v e r ~ ' pretty" will, generally, be interpretedas downright disapproval. You must r av e and continue t o r av eand, even then, you won't be believed, especiallY, if t he l ady i sn 'ttoo sold on the dres s or hat, herself, and intends to send it backanyway. You must know that there is no s uc h cold a s j u st a plain, com

mon cold, If "Joe" has a c ol d a nd h is wife it;; t el l ing he r te lephone"confidante" about i t, t he n Joe has a perfectly, terrible, dreadfUl,frightful. or na tsy cold. On the other h and. n o married woman everhad a plain headache , i t is always either a ter ri fi c s i ck or spli t tingheadache. ,

The "nUdge" is another quaint married custom it would be wellus t o s tUdy a minute. Many of YOU men have been in the Signa l

Corps and are expert a.t receiving and decoding messages. However.even this experience will help but little in figuring out t he "nudge."Let's say Mrs. Smivens has come t o c al l and you start . ta lking. in allinnocence, about the UmIatI' Radio hour you heard last. week. A t t hi spoint you get the "nUdge" 01' as it happens. a sharp kick in the shins,f ol lowed by a pointed stare, and as you are bewilderingly wonderingwha t i t i s a ll about . the gues t leaves and your l i tt l e wife turns on youand says, " I t ho ug ht I 'd die when you started t alk ing about thatUmlote Radio haul'. Don't you know i t 's on Wednesday night and Itold Mrs. Squiltch you were in Scranton on Wednesday night a s anexcuse for not going to that Girl Scout affair . Now Mrs. Smivens is avery dear f r ie nd of Mrs. Squil t ch ' s a.nd she'll probably run r i gh t overand inform h e r t h at you were home Wedne sday night . Why I neverwas so mortified in my whole life."

Some of ~ ' o u haveseen a great deal of ac tion and plenty of excitement but you will never see such a commotion 01' as mUch productionmade about anyth ing as one woman paying back e ighte en cent s thatshe borrowed from another woman, Now, your walking along, in bliss

ful ignorancewi th your "one and onlY" when you run in to Mrs . Smivens. Abruptly your lady hi ss es at you, "give me e ighteen cent s, don 'task any questions, just give me egihteen cents." The best yOU can dois a quar ter so this is grabbed from you and pressed on Mrs. Smivensas "the eighteen cents I borrowed f rom you la st week." Voluble protests follow and t he qua rt er is ba tt ed back and forth. Mrs. Smivensfinally accePts but t h is m akes h e r owe your wife seVen cents. so thisstarts the whole business all over again, That night will come a, sheepi sh t inkle at your doorbell and maybe "Junior Smivens" will, awkwardly, h an d i n the seven c en ts o r if he is, particularly, well brokento doUble harness. it might be Mr. Smivens, himSelf.
