Fuel Savings Tips as Gas Prices SoarWith gas prices exceeding three dollars a gallon in many parts of the country, the Car Care Council is offering gas-saving maintenance and driving tips that really work.
“Millions of dollars worth of gasoline is wasted every day by motorists, because simple and inexpensive vehicle maintenance is neglected,” said Rich White, executive director of the Car Care Council. “Loose or missing gas caps, under-infl ated tires, worn spark plugs and dirty air fi lters all contribute to poor fuel economy.”
The Car Care Council offers these fuel-saving tips:Vehicle gas caps – About 17 percent of the vehicles on the roads have gas caps that are either damaged, loose or are missing altogether, causing 147 million gallons of gas to vaporize every year. Under infl ated tires – When tires aren’t infl ated properly it’s like driving with the parking brake on and can cost a mile or two per gallon. Worn spark plugs – A vehicle can have either four, six or eight spark plugs, which fi re as many as 3 million times every 1,000 miles, resulting in a lot of heat and electrical and chemical erosion. A dirty spark plug causes misfi ring, which wastes fuel. Spark plugs need to be replaced regularly. Dirty air fi lters – An air fi lter that is clogged with dirt, dust and bugs chokes off the air and creates a “rich” mixture – too much gas being burned for the amount of air, which wastes gas and causes the engine to lose power. Replacing a clogged air fi lter can improve gas mileage by as much as 10 percent, saving about 15 cents a gallon.
FUEL-SAVING DRIVING TIPS INCLUDE:
Don’t be an aggressive driver – Aggressive driving can lower gas mileage by as much as 33 percent on the highway and 5 percent on city streets, which results in 7 to 49 cents per gallon. Avoid excessive idling – Sitting idle gets zero miles per gallon. Letting the vehicle warm up for one to two minutes is suffi cient. Observe the speed limit – Gas mileage decreases rapidly at speeds above 60 mph. Each mph driven over 60 will result in an additional 10 cents per gallon. To maintain a constant speed on the highway, cruise control is recommended.

Prison guards are all alike. You know what I mean. They’re obnoxious, rude, abusive and power-hungry. And they don’t care about the inmates as people and proper enforcement of rules. At least, that’s the way they are in the movies. So prison guards must be that way in real life, right?
Actually, no. Joe Nunziato, a longtime Glenmont resident, worked for and retired from the New York State Corrections Department after 25 years. And he wants to set the record straight. It turns out that correction offi cers aren’t lazy, cruel and unjust. Joe felt so passionate about sharing just what does go on behind prison walls, he wrote a book about it. His book is War Stories. He gives an account of his years at Great Meadow, Sing Sing, Green Haven and Coxsackie correctional facilities. There are stories about the inmates, the offi cers and the people in charge.
In fact, Joe heard so many inaccuracies about prison guards, that he tried to address all of them in his book. According to Joe, “You shouldn’t believe what you’ve seen of prison guards on television because it couldn’t be further from the truth. It just isn’t what the guards truly are.” The offi cers come from all walks of life, from very liberal to conservative and everything between. Most, when you look closely, are good, kind-hearted individuals.
Success in this job comes from the relationship held with the people in prison. He believes that for the guards, respect is the most important piece in the relationship with the inmates. He explains that many of these people come from a place of severe poverty. Drug addiction is common. These are people who grew up on the streets, where the strong survive. In order to be in an authority position, you must be strong also. Hatred doesn’t work. Neither does anger. Joe describes his way as how a stern father would treat his son. He was taught three words in his training, “Fair. Firm. Consistent.”
Those words rang true to him, and he was determined to use them every day in his career. “It was a very important part of what I did. If I said yes today, I said yes every day. If it was no today, then it’s no tomorrow. You cannot ever change it. If you do, they’ll fi nd a weak spot. Then manipulate you.”
He describes the corrections offi cers as human beings, with many emotions. Inmates learn to recognize them and play on those emotions when they want something. Once, early in Joe’s career, an inmate asked if he could return sneakers to “22 Cell”. They were borrowed from the man in that cell. It was against regulations to borrow them. And against regulations to open the door so they could be returned. The genuineness of his request touched Joe, and he opened the door to allow the transaction. He decided to bend the rules. Open the door. The inmate walked to 22 Cell, threw down the sneakers, and started a viscous fi ght. “It was a lesson learned,” one Joe never made again.
Another story is from his time at the nearby correctional facility in Coxsackie. It was an event that nearly turned into a riot. Hearing it from Joe made my palms sweat, my heart beat a little faster. It’s a scary story and one best left to Joe’s storytelling. It involved 80 men and a handful of guards. The inmates attacked an offi cer in the yard. A second guard locked himself in a console area, then attempted to duck out through an escape hatch. Only, the key was still in the console room. He had to go back. The inmates broke in just as he was
getting the key and retreating. He was badly beaten. On that day the inmates also made it to another group of guards, who were barricaded in an offi ce. They ripped a steal door off its hinges to reach them. Joe, off duty at the time, was involved in the rescue effort. Eventually, the prisoners were overcome. Every guard who was attacked that day left the job and never came back.
Joe tells the story of another near-riot, this one while he was on duty. It was before lock-in, at the end of the night. The inmates were in the rec room. There had been some unrest, due to a new lieutenant. She wouldn’t let

the men hang towels over their cells for privacy when using the bathroom. Other changes were made that the inmates didn’t like. Joe knew that something was going on. On one of the bulletin boards, a note had been posted: “Attica is going to happen here.” Chilling words for a guard. Still, he played it cool.
On that night, the bell rang and the guards called out “Let’s go!” It was still. Silent. Not one inmate moved. Then, one of the men leaped on a table, shouting and jumping. The men started cheering. Joe silently backed out of the room. He and the other guard locked themselves into the guard room. The men were yelling, stamping their feet, “We are men and we want to be treated like men!” It was the most scared he ever was on the job. This confrontation didn’t end like Attica. It was peaceful. The men didn’t get any of their demands. But Joe stayed at the prison that night until 3 am, doing paperwork.
One of his favorite stories is short, with a happy ending. Understandably, the guards are meticulous about keys. Each has a number of keys and all are accounted for. One night, a key went missing. No one could fi nd it. They all looked on their key rings. Looked again. Still, no key. The sergeant ordered the guards to check each other’s keys. Again, no key. Finally, he came round, and checked each key ring. It was becoming a very serious situation. No one wanted to think about what could happen if a key landed in the hands of an inmate. Then, in checking his keys one last time, the key was
there. The sergeant, disturbed by the mix-up, ordered a report on how he could have had the key all along. Joe happily agreed, sure he would write the report. And, he’d have to include in it how the sergeant had looked there and also not seen the key. “Oh... forget it!” the sergeant said. This is said with a smile and a laugh.
Joe Nunziato fi nishes our time together by saying again how much he dislikes the stereotype of the corrections offi cer: loud, obnoxious and a jerk. It just isn’t so, he says with a shake of the head. He spent 25 years working with folks in prisons; people who are your neighbor, your aunt or the guy behind you in church. He’s worked with former DJ’s and stockbrokers. One guard he knew was a woman, and shorter than fi ve feet. Tough one, she was. They are all regular people, who quietly do their job, do it well, and then go home at the end of the day. Buy Joe’s book, War Stories. Read it. What is the difference between brand and generic medications?How is a Brand Name medication developed and approved by the FDA?A brand, or trade name, medication is the original FDA approved drug product. The process for developing a new drug is extensive, time consuming, and very costly. New drugs start with laboratory research then pre-clinical animal studies. Next, the medication goes through a series of clinical human studies. The fi rst phase is in a small group of healthy human participants where the focus is on safety and tolerability. The second phase examines the effectiveness of the medication in a small group of people with the disease the drug is designed to treat. The third phase is a much larger and longer study in which thousands of patients are enrolled. The drug being studied is compared to a placebo or control group who get no medication. During all of these phases information about the safety, adverse reactions, side effects, best dosing, and overall effectiveness of the drug are studied. The FDA monitors all of these phases and post-marketing trials. Post-marketing studies are conducted after the drug is approved to continue to collect information on the long term risks and benefi ts to determine optimal use of the drug. On average, it take approximately 15 years and 800 million dollars to take one new medication from the laboratory to the pharmacy shelf. Only 1 out of 10,000 new medications investigated actually makes it to the approval phase.
What is a Generic medication?Generic medications are FDA approved to be substituted for the brand name after the brand’s patent expires. To be approved, a generic medication is identical to its brand name counterpart in active ingredients, strength, dosage form, safety, route of administration, quality, effect on the body, and intended use.
What is the Approval Process for a generic medication?Patents, or exclusive rights to producing a medication, on brand name medications can last upwards of 20 years. Once a patent on a brand name medication expires, other companies can then develop the generic product to sell with FDA approval. Generic medications are usually offered at a lower cost than their brand name counterpart. This lower cost is due to the fact that the generic companies do not need to pay to perform all of the initial research and development because the company that made the brand name medication already did. However, the generic company must conduct studies to prove it is bioequivalent to the brand name. This means that blood levels of the generic product are the same as the brand name medication ensuring it is released in the body the same way. A recent study performed by the FDA found that the difference in bioequivalence between a brand and generic drugs are less than four per cent, well within FDA requirements.
How can a generic medication be different from the brand name?The inactive ingredients (fi llers), color, shape, size, and other characteristics that do not affect how the medicine is released into the body can be different in the generic product.
How can I fi nd out if there is a generic available for a particular medication?There are many resources available on the FDA’s website that can be utilized by both health care providers and the public. There are links to Drugs@FDA, The Electronic Orange Book, and First Generics (see resources below). Drugs@FDA is a catalog of FDA approved products and their labeling. The Electronic Orange Book details which generic products are equivalent. First Generics can be used for new generic medications because it takes approximately one month for them to appear in The Orange Book. You can also ask your pharmacist or contact your insurance company for information on availability of generic and brand name medications.
What is the Orange Book?The Orange Book, offi cially titled Approved Drug Products With Therapeutic Equivalence Evaluations, is the authoritative source for determining equivalence of brand and generic medications published by the FDA. It is a list of approved drug products and information on their equivalence for health care professionals and the public. Within this reference medications are given different ratings to indicate if they are considered to be generics or not. Medications that are considered therapeutically equivalent, or an approved generic, that can be substituted will have an A rating.
What do I do once a medication becomes available generically?Many times people are taking a brand name medication for years before a generic equivalent becomes available. Sometimes confusion about what the next steps should be occur. Per New York State law all medications must be fi lled generically unless specifi ed otherwise by the prescriber. If you do not want to switch to the generic your doctor will have to write a new prescription for the brand only. A benefi t of switching to a generic includes a reduced price or copay. For patients with a coverage gap or a cap on their medication spending, choosing generic alternatives can also lower that expenditure.
What if my medication does not have a generic, but I want to lower my cost?There are many medications that do not have generics. However, often there are similar medications within the same class that do have a generic. The question of whether or not you should switch medications should be discussed with your doctor. A benefi t would be a lower cost. A disadvantage could be that your condition would need to be monitored to get the correct dose of the new medication.
Understanding Payment, Insurance Co-pay Tiers, and Generic Laws in New York State?Most insurance companies have tiers of co-pays typically with the lowest co-pays being for generic medications and the higher co-pays for brand name medications. New York State requires all medications be fi lled generically unless specifi ed by the prescriber that the brand name product is necessary. Many times if a generic medication is available and a patient and their provider still want the brand name the insurance companies will charge higher co-pays.

Constipation Stop You!
There are several natural ways to stop constipation which sometimes can be troublesome for older adults. The natural solutions are simple, common sense ways to help you become more “regular”.
1. Eat a high-fi ber diet. Choose foods like fruits, vegetables, whole grain cereals and breads, and eat them in the most natural form possible.Remember to add fi ber to your diet gradually to help reduce gas and bloating.
2. Limit low-fi ber foods. Food that are high in fat and sugar tend to be low in fi ber, such as ice cream, cheese and processed foods. You do nothave to eliminate them, but eat them in moderation as they may cause or aggravate constipation.
3. Drink plenty of liquids. The exact amount varies, but on average about8 full glasses of water should be consumed each day. Limit caffeine,which can be found in tea, coffee and soda.
4. Exercise and Eat regularly. Engage in regular physical exercise, such as walking, to help stimulate intestinal function. Try to get at least 30 minutes of exercise most days.
5. Heed nature’s call. Don’t ignore the urge to go. The longer you delaythe more diffi cult it can be to move your bowels. Regular habits are preferred and should not be rushed. Regularity varies from person to person and can be anywhere from 3x per day to 3x perweek.
6. Avoid overuse of Laxatives. The chronic use of certain laxatives can make your colon dependent on them and may result in improper colon function leading to further constipation.

Each year, February is designated as Pet Dental Health month — although dental health should be a daily ritual for pet owners all year long. Even though there has been great effort to educate owners about their pet’s dental health, periodontal disease continues to be the most frequently diagnosed condition in cats and dogs. The effects can range from bad breath to serious systemic disease. According to the American Dental Society, 80% of dogs and 70% of cats show signs of dental disease by the age of 3 years. Periodontal disease is progressive infl ammation and destruction of the tissues that support the teeth including gums, tooth root, enamel and the periodontal ligament, which holds the tooth in the mouth. How does periodontal disease occur? Bacteria and food particles adhere to the tooth’s surface to form plaque. Minerals combine with this plaque to form hard calculus referred to as tartar. It’s this buildup of tartar at the gum line that creates gingivitis, the onset of periodontal disease, and ultimately tooth loss. Bad breath is an early and sensitive indicator that harmful bacteria are growing in the mouth. Your pet’s teeth should look white, just like ours. If you see yellow or brown stains, especially around the gum line, there is a problem. If the gum line (where the gums meet the tooth) is red, your pet has gingivitis and should have an evaluation as soon as possible. A proper dental prophylactic cleaning for your pet is very similar to your own teeth cleaning. It should include tartar removal by scaling, including under

• Development of the Vista Technology Park in Slingerlands now – to achieve new revenues for tax abatement economic development and in a broader sense, job creation.
• Further expenditure reductions in the 2012 Budget.
• Continued effective working relationships at all levels and in all directions to do the very best we can to always put Bethlehem fi rst.
• To make robust and responsible fi nancial investments in our deteriorating water, sewer and facility infrastructure to reduce current and future costs and service delays.
• Encourage and, if appropriate, adopt the recommendations of the 20/20 Implementation Advisory Committee regarding: economic development; Town modernization and cost savings, and; intergovernmental cooperation.
I am proud of what we (Town Residents and business people, your elected offi cials, the Planning and Zoning Boards, Town staff and volunteers) have accomplished, and I know we can more than meet the challenges ahead and turn them into opportunities.

WIn the 20th century, there are few names that tower above all others when it comes to promoting health and fi tness as a lifestyle. Jack LaLanne, The Godfather of Fitness was one of them. Jack passed away Sunday, January 23, 2011 at the age of 96. While others live to be 96, his commitment to a healthy lifestyle helped determine the quality of all the years of his life.
Through his television show, Jack brought physical fi tness to TV viewers (targeting women who were at home during the day) in a non-threatening, no-equipment-needed way. I remember watching Jack standing next to a chair, doing leglifts in his tradmark black stretchy jumpsuit. [The best part in my 7 year old opinion was when his dog Happy was on camera...] You can watch those shows on his website www.jacklalanne.com.
Jack was aware from the beginning that some people viewed him as a “crackpot.” He said he decided he needed to perfom stunts in order to prove himself to the masses. He performed his fi rst feat in 1954, when he was 40 and wanted to prove he wasn’t “over the hill.” He swam the length of the Golden Gate Bridge — underwater. (He carried two air tanks.) When he turned 43 in 1957, Jack performed more than 1,000 pushups in 23 minutes on the TV show “You Asked For It.”
Other feats in his 40s: swimming from Alcatraz to San Francisco’s Fisherman’s Wharf wearing handcuffs; swimming the Golden Gate Channel while towing a 2,500-pound cabin cruiser; pulling a paddleboard 30 miles from the Farallon Islands to the San Francisco shore.so
In his 60s: swam from Alcatraz to Fisherman’s Wharf in San Francisco, handcuffed and shackled and towing a 1,000-pound boat; the next year, he did a similar feat underwater.
And at age 70, he towed 70 boats with 70 people from the Queen’s Way Bridge in Long Beach Harbor to the Queen Mary — while handcuffed and shackled.
“The only way you can hurt the body is not use it,” LaLanne said. “Inactivity is the killer and, remember, it’s never too late.”
Most of us would agree that we’d only like to live to be 100 years old if we can be independent and feel good. Maybe our goal shouldn’t be so much about reaching a certain age, but tather to improve our health so we feel great and remain independent throughout our lives. Challenges are always going to be there. Life can be stressful and many of us are over-busy, our jobs are sedentary, and junk food is everywhere and cheap.
There’s no magic to it. We have to take time to plan and cook healthy food and move every day. I have clients who are single mothers working full time jobs who make it to classes twice a week. If you’re gonna have an addiction, make it about taking care of yourself – the “high” lasts a lot longer!! :)
The good news is that you don’t have to be as active as Jack LaLanne to reap some real benefi ts! Go for a walk. Learn how to do planks, pushups, strengthen your core so you can get up and down out of chairs and off the fl oor easily, carry your groceries, take care of yourself and your home.. No one else can make you do it. There’s support out there – fi nd it if you want it, but just go for it!

Hello Bethlehem,
I’d like to begin with a quote by John Maxwell“A great leaders courage to fulfi ll his vision comes from passion not position.”
It is with great enthusiasm and excitement that I have this opportunity to introduce myself as the new Executive Director of The Bethlehem YMCA. It is with the utmost privilege that I am able to represent an organization that I am passionate about and serve such a respected and engaging community as the Bethlehem Area.
Although my roots with the Y date back to my childhood with The Albany Y and a camper at Camp Chingachgook, it was the Y’s mission that captured both my heart and mind… and didn’t let go.
Six years ago I was presented with the opportunity to sit on the Board of Directors of The Guilderland Branch. During these past years I have experienced fi rst hand how the Y Organization has changed the lives of so many children and families. Being a volunteer with the Y has afforded me the opportunity to be part of such terrifi c events as The Circle of Champs Program, Black and Latino Achievers, The Presidents Award, The Student Educator Breakfast, the Brenda Deere Run, Scholarship Program, Annual Golf Classic and Pinebush Triathlon to name a few.
It was during a Y National Conference in Salt Lake City this summer, when I realized that I wanted to immerse myself even more with the Y and their philanthropic, community and civic outreach. With the guidance and support of Guilderland Executive Director Karen Hennet and CEO David Brown I made the decision to close the chapter on a successful twelve-year fi nancial career and follow my passion.
Our vision for The Bethlehem Y is to continue to build on an already strong community base by developing our Board of Directors and Volunteer Committees. We are introducing a new program called The Circle of Champs Program. This program is dedicated to improving the lives of children ages 5-15 who have been touched by a life threatening illness. We strive to strengthen our ties with the respected Bethlehem Central School District. With the partnership of BCSD Assistant Principal Scott Landry we will be running a program called ICAN. ICAN will be dedicated to improving the lives of potential at risk youth, foreign transfer students and physically challenged youth. We are also looking to provide new programs and activities for our Active Older Adult community. All of these programs coincide with The Y’s mission of promoting Youth Development, Healthy Living and Social Responsibility.
Some exciting events we have planned for 2011 are an Indoor Triathlon, a strength and conditioning program for teens, a basketball clinic featuring several Capital District Hall of Famers, a new Y swim team, special appearances by The Albany Devils hockey team, our summer camp. We are also looking to partner with the town to offer our inaugural “Delmar Duathlon”.
We look forward to serving our community and I would welcome the opportunity to meet the residents of our Bethlehem Area.

A great thing about kids is their natural trust in people, especially in adults. It’s sometimes hard for parents to teach children to balance this trust with caution. But kids today need to know common-sense rules that can help keep them safe and build the self-confi dence they need to handle emergencies.
MAKE SURE YOUR KIDS KNOW!
How to call 911 or "0" in emergencies, and how to use a public phone. Help them practice making emergency phone calls. Be sure emergency numbers: police, fi re, poison control and emergency medical,are by all phones.

It’s cold outside…Why not warm up to a good book?Greetings fellow readers, Winter in the “great Northeast” is one of unpredictable frigid, blizzardy, blustery, and often blue sky screaming days! What a start to 2011! Shoveling, scraping, bundled in layers…snow days. Isn’t it ironic the reaction that the words “snow day” gets depending on one’s age? Snow day…the joyful anticipation of the day off from school transposed in later life to getting up an hour earlier to scrape the car & shovel the driveway! But winter in the great Northeast is also one that provides endless opportunities for adventure. Cross country skiing, snowboarding, skating, sledding, building snow forts, and snow people, and settling in with a good book! I love the look in my yard after a new fallen snow. I love to watch the variety of birds dart about my birdfeeders under snow covered boughs. My granddaughter Trinity, her daddy, Ryan and my husband recently returned from sledding and snowman creating (well, actually creating a Mommy and Daddy snowman) at the Town Park. I was literally “under the weather” that day but after their return, and viewing photos of the adventure and hearing the tales of fun in the snow, I got to cuddle in my chair with a lapful of books, Trinity and a cup of hot tea. Her choices consisted of tales of snowmen, polar bears, penguins and sledding adventures. A few titles: “Snow Bear” by Miriam Moss, “Tacky the Penguin” by Helen Lester, Kevin O’Malley’s “Straight to the Pole” and one of her favorites “The Singing Snowbear” by Carol Grigg. You know, I also cherished those special times with my little dog Riley in my lap as I read my next installment of Tess Gerritsen, Michael Connelly or James Patterson mysteries. For those of you who are store patrons, I must share some sad news…my beloved dog, and offi cial store greeter, Riley, past away on January 3rd. It was sudden, and unexpected. He was 10 1/2 years old. He brought joy to so many and I am thankful for each day that I had him with me, especially here at the shop. I have shared many a tissue with those who have come in looking for him recently. For your tears and kind words, thank you! Financial Gifts Can Bring Smiles on Valentine’s Day
Each Valentine’s Day, Americans spend millions of dollars on candy and fl owers. These are fi ne gifts, but after the chocolates are eaten and the roses have wilted, Valentine’s Day will just be a pleasant memory. But if you want to give a present that can benefi t your valentine for years to come, why not give a fi nancial gift?
Here are a few creative ideas for doing just that:
~Give shares of stock. Like everyone else, your valentine no doubt enjoys certain products or services. So why not give her or him shares of stock in the businesses that produce those goods and services? Your valentine will enjoy being an owner and may well use this newfound stock ownership to develop a greater interest in investing — and investing can help all of us work toward our fi nancial goals. (Keep in mind that, if you are giving away shares of your own stock, you should take note of your original purchase price; this information will be needed for tax purposes should your gift recipient ever sell the shares.)
~Contribute to an IRA. Does your valentine contribute to a traditional or Roth IRA? If so, he or she is making a wise move, because an IRA is one of the best tax-advantaged ways to save for retirement. Consequently, you’ll be doing your valentine a great service by helping him or her fund an IRA. (While you can’t directly invest in someone else’s IRA, you can write that person a check for the same purpose.) For the 2010 and 2011 tax years, the IRA contribution limit is $5,000, or $6,000 for investors 50 and older. And contributions for 2010 can be made right up until the tax-fi ling deadline.
~Make a charitable gift in your valentine’s name. Your valentine may well support certain charitable, educational or civic groups. By making a contribution to one or more of these groups, and designating the gift in your valentine’s name, you will be doing a good thing for your valentine, for the charity — and for yourself, too, because your gift may earn you some tax benefi ts. If you simply give cash, you can write off part of the value of your gift if it’s made to tax-qualifi ed charitable organization. And if you give an appreciated asset, such as stock, you’ll also avoid paying capital gains taxes, because when the stock is sold, it will be the charity, not you, taking the gain.
~Make a debt payment. You might want to volunteer to pay your valentine’s car payment or credit card payment for a month, and then encourage your valentine to put the savings to work in an investment. The more debts any of us have, the less we have to invest for our future. ~Check your benefi ciary designations. If your valentine also happens to be your spouse, you’ll be doing him or her a favor by making sure the benefi ciary designations are correct on your insurance policies and investment accounts. Through all the events of life — marriage, remarriage, new children — these designations can become outdated, so you’ll want to keep them current.
By following any or all of these suggestions, you can help make sure your loved one will feel the glow of this year’s Valentine’s Day far into the future.

Cavities are decayed areas of your teeth that develop into tiny openings or holes. Cavities, also called tooth decay or caries, are caused by a combination of factors, including not cleaning your teeth well, frequent snacking and sipping sugary drinks.
If cavities aren't treated, they get larger and the decay can cause a severe toothache, infection, tooth loss and other complications. Regular dental visits and good brushing and fl ossing habits go a long way toward preventing cavities and tooth decay.
The signs and symptoms of cavities and tooth decay vary depending on the extent and location of the cavity. When a cavity is just beginning, you may not have any symptoms at all.
But as the decay gets larger, it may cause such signs and symptoms as: ■Toothache■Tooth sensitivity■Mild to sharp pain when eating or drinking something sweet, hot or cold■Visible holes or pits in your teeth■Pain when you bite down■Pus around a tooth
When to see a doctorYou may not be aware that a cavity is starting, so visiting your dentist regularly is your best protection against cavities and tooth decay. However, a toothache or tooth pain is commonly a telltale sign of a cavity. If your teeth or mouth hurts, visit your dentist as soon as possible.
In addition to pain, contact your dentist if you develop any of these signs or symptoms:
■Red, tender or swollen gums■Bleeding gums■Gums that are pulling away from your teeth, which may make your teeth seem longer■A bad taste in your mouth■Unexplained bad breath■Loose teeth■Changes in the way your top and bottom teeth touch■Sensitivity to sweet, hot or cold foods or beverages■Pain that causes you to avoid brushing or cleaning certain teeth or areas

Set back thermostat at night and when you leave home. Setting the thermostat back 10 degrees at night or when the house will be unoccupied can save up to 15% on heating costs.
Install a programmable thermostat. Programmable thermostats allow you to reduce your home's temperature at night and during the day and still have the home warm when you wake up or come home from work.

Let sunshine in south windows. Open drapes on the south side of your home during winter days and close them at night. Sun angles are low in winter, allowing substantial solar heating through all south windows.

Close storm windows and doors.Storm windows installed over primary windows are almost as good as double-pane windows for reducing heat loss, but they only work if they are kept closed.
Lower the thermostat set point on your water heater.Keep water temperatures at about 120 degrees. You can check your water temperature by carefully placing the back of your hand under a steady stream of hot water—if you can't keep your hand there, your water is too hot.
Reduce hot water use.Reducing hot water use reduces the cost of heating water. Low-fl ow showerheads save water and energy. Using the cold water setting on your washing machine and repairing leaky faucets will save on water and water-heating costs.

Valentine Dance/Skating PartyA Valentine Dance / Ice Skating Party will be held Friday, February 11, 7-9pm at the Elm Ave. Park Skating Rink and Warming Area. This FREE event is open to all Middle School students who reside in the Town of Bethlehem or Bethlehem Central School District. The evening will feature a DJ, dancing and ice skating (weather permitting, please bring your own skates).
