Twelve guinea pigs. Two rats. One turtle. One bunny and two fl ying squirrels. Nope, it’s not the Mohawk-Hudson Humane Society - it’s the home of 14 year-old Abby Serfi lippi, Delmar resident and ninth grader at the Academy of the Holy Names. Abby and her menagerie live with the rest of Abby’s family: her sister and parents. Her passion for animals became a way of life after a charity project at St. Thomas School four years ago. The Hudson Mohawk Humane Society was the organization the school chose to help. Once Abby started her work in helping animals, she found it was hard to stop. Animal activism has found its way into many different aspects of the Serfi lippi’s lives. Her mother is a big supporter of everything Abby does, and diligently works by her side, caring for the animals they own and helping to raise money for other animals, too. First, they rescue unwanted guinea pigs. Abby says that many of the local veterinarians know her now, and will call and ask if she can take another. They always make the room. When asked what her father thinks of all these animals, Abby and her mother laugh. “Sometimes he’ll go into the guinea pig room and say, ‘Wait a minute! This one wasn’t here before.’ “ Even after discovering a new furry body, he is a good sport about their love of animals. He has one guinea pig in particular he likes, and builds cages when needed. Caring for this many animals is a lot of work and Abby is very dedicated to each of them. She also knows there are many animals that her family cannot take in. This is where the charity work comes in. Abby and her mother spend many hours creating crafts to sell to community members. All of the money is donated to animal shelters. This venture is called Dust Bunny’s Boutique and everything they make and sell is handmade by Abby and her mother.Over the years Dust Bunny’s Boutique has donated thousands of dollars to Catskill Animal Sanctuary, Farm Sanctuary, Mohawk and Hudson River Humane Society, Animal Protective Foundation,
the Critter Connection, and North Country Wild Care. Their work in making crafts to sell for animal shelters began all those years ago at the school charity event. The whole school pitched in, making crafts and selling them for the animal shelter. After the sale, Abby and her mother didn’t want to stop. They decided to continue creating crafts to sell at farmers markets, school craft fairs and holiday bazaars. Abby is most passionate when it comes to being vegan and educating people about what that means. This year, she organized an event at her school to help people understand what factory farming is all about. She wanted her peers to know that animals on those big farms aren’t treated very well. Her event included a visit from Kathy Stevens, founder and director of the Catskill Animal Sanctuary. Kathy read from her new book “Animal Camp”, an account of life at the sanctuary. The students were thrilled to hear the funny and touching stories of the animal personalities living there. Abby also showed a fi lm, age appropriate yet informative, about the abuses animals can suffer on those large farms. The day included food prepared by chef Kevin Archer, also from the Catskill Animal Sanctuary.
He created vegan foods for the students to taste. There was minestrone soup, Mexican rice, spring rolls and berry sorbet. Abby arranged for the chef to not only prepare this food so the students could try it, but to teach them how to cook vegan food. People left with recipes and the knowledge needed to go home and cook vegan food for themselves. It was a very successful day for Abby. Her peers were informed about vegan food and the suffering of animals in factory farms, and money was raised for her favorite charity: the Catskill Animal Sanctuary.

Hey, if you know a Bethlehem neighbor who has a unique story or amazing accomplishment, please email:
Interview and article by Caroline Barrett
Abby continues her work in spreading the word about the farms where animals are often mistreated: she created a display at the Bethlehem Public Library for children and their parents to see. She gave information about the farms that mistreat animals, samples of her crafts, and pictures of the beautiful creatures she works so hard to help. Her activism also includes protesting. Abby believes the circuses do not treat their animals well. Each year, when the circus comes to Albany, Abby and her mother join a small but dedicated group of people who come to educate the circus-goers about the abuses elephants suffer by the trainers. This passion for animals started when she and her mother came across a video, a terrible graphic account of the animals used for the fur trade. After seeing that video, Abby knew a life change was in order. She became a vegan and dedicated her life to helping animals. “Being a vegan, I don’t have to worry about what I eat any more. I know what I’m eating is good for me and nothing I eat hurts an animal.” Abby says, explaining how she stays vegan in a world where meat and dairy products are the norm. “It’s not hard to do because it feels right,” she adds. After changing her eating habits and starting Dust Bunny’s Boutique, Abby decided that educating people is a very big part of helping animals. Abby has been busy creating her crafts for the upcoming holiday season. She’s always thinking about the animals she helps, but reaching out to her peers is also very important. The crafts she makes are button buddies (a fuzzy animal sitting atop a button), decorated notebooks, decorated storage and gift boxes, Christmas decorations and many other sweet animal themed crafts. Her idea is to appeal to kids, so they’ll buy the crafts. Then she’ll have the chance to educate them about animal abuse and how to help animals. And the money they spend goes to the animals. For Abby Serfi lippi, if she’s helping the animals, it’s a job well done.

Pain Relief
Alternatives When you are in pain you want relief, fast. But for
many people the over the counter pain medications out there just aren’t enough. For others the risks of the prescription strength medications outweigh the benefi ts. Fortunately, for people like this they can turn to natural remedies to help their pain.
Whether you suffer from joint pain, neuropathy, arthritis, or an injury there are many herbs and essential oils that can be ingested or directly applied to the skin for pain relief. Even though these remedies are considered natural, a person should always consult their doctor before starting any new treatments.
Some of the more commonly used herbs and essential oils include:• Capsaicin. It is applied as a topical cream and works to temporarily desensitize pain-prone skin nerve receptors.• Ginger. Can be applied or ingested and is good for joint and muscle pain, working to stop infl ammation. • Feverfew. Useful in the treatment of headaches, stomachaches, and toothaches.• Turmeric. A spice that provides relief of arthritis, heartburn, and infl ammation. • St. John’s Wort. When applied topically to the area that is in pain it works to decrease swelling. Is also available in pill form and is a popular herbal treatment for depression. • Arnica. This is herb found in a European fl ower that has natural anti-infl ammatory properties that are great for post-surgery. • Fish Oil. Once it is digested, fi sh oil works to reduce infl ammation. It is also good for your heart!
• Willow Bark. This is the original source of aspirin. It has the same pain relieving affect, by working to reduce swelling, but it is easier on your stomach.
In addition to the many great herbal pain relievers there are also some different techniques that require taking nothing at all.
Non herbal remedies include various techniques for relaxation:• Meditation and deep breathing exercises. Meditation is defi ned as “consciously directing your attention to alter your state of consciousness.” This is often done through deep breathing in a quiet place while sitting straight up or lying down fl at. • Counting out loud. This helps brief “needle stick” pain. It is thought that by counting you are distracting your brain from the pain you are experiencing. • Massage. Whether you are having a deep tissue massage to release chronic muscular tension or refl exology, in which pressure is applied to specifi c areas in correlation with the body’s organs, massage therapy can be a great source of pain relief. • Low-impact exercise. By reducing stiffness, increasing fl exibility, and maintaining strength pain can be avoided. Examples include brisk walking, water aerobics, swimming, gardening, stationary bike riding, and yoga.• Chiropractic. Chiropractors are often able to treat pain found in muscles, joints, and connective tissues by making sure that the spinal column is correctly aligned. This often allows the body to heal itself without needing surgery.
For many, effective pain control comes through a combination of techniques and strategies. The non-medicinal approaches to pain control listed here are often great supplements to the pain management program one already has in place.

This August, Canterbury Animal Hospital will be celebrating our 5th Anniversary of providing health care for the pets of Bethlehem and beyond. Join us on Saturday, August 13th from 10 am – 1 pm at our hospital to celebrate this milestone with us! Well-behaved and leashed pets are welcome to celebrate with us. There will be treats for people and pets, door prizes, raffl es, pet portraits by a professional photographer and more!
In celebration of Canterbury Animal Hospital’s 5th Anniversary, here are 5 great reasons that pets are good for you:
Health: An Australian survey found that dog and cat owners were in better health than people with neither (health was measured either by how often people went to the doctor or by how much medication they took). And a study with people on Medicare found that those who owned pets made fewer doctor visits than those who didn’t. According to the Humane Society pet owner tend to have lower stress levels, lower blood pressure, lower cholesterol levels and are more likely to survive a heart attack. Pet owners also tend to rehabilitate faster from physical or psychological illnesses.
Hypertension: A number of studies have found that just being around a dog or petting a dog can lower blood pressure. One study found the same with a pet goat. Research shows that when you stroke an animal, your blood pressure goes down and your heart rate slows. For many people, watching fi sh in an aquarium creates a similar decrease in blood pressure and heart rate and is both soothing and meditative.
Longevity: A year after being released from a coronary care unit, a study found pet owners were more likely to have survived than people who didn’t have pets. A UCLA Medical Center Study showed improved lung and heart function in heart failure patients after a 12 minute visit with a dog. The study also showed that these patients had a noticeable drop in stress hormones and perceived anxiety dropped signifi cantly.

Allergy prevention: Evidence is mounting that children raised with pets are less likely to develop allergies to the animals than children raised without. In at least one study, the effect was greater with cats than with dogs. And in at least one other, the preventive effect extended to dust mite, ragweed and grass allergies.
Obesity: A study in Australia found that children who had a dog in their household were less likely to be overweight or obese than children who didn’t.
Fitness: Research shows that pet owners tend to be more active physically, especially dog owners who get out and walk with their pets on a regular basis. In one study, two out of three dog owners took Fido for regular walks. Another study suggests that if you want to shape up, dogs make better walking buddies than humans do — perhaps because dogs don’t make up excuses for why they can’t go for a walk that day. In short, pets help reduce feelings of anxiety, stress and isolation and improve general health so take good care of your furry, feathered or scaly friend!

Fuel Savings Tips as Gas Prices SoarWith gas prices exceeding two dollars a gallon in many parts of the country, the Car Care Council is offering gas-saving maintenance and driving tips that really work. Record Gas Prices Make it Perfect Time to “Be Car Care Aware” Here are some fuel-saving tips: Vehicle gas caps – About 17 percent of the vehicles on the roads have gas caps that are either damaged, loose or are missing altogether, causing 147 million gallons of gas to vaporize every year. Under infl ated tires – When tires aren’t infl ated properly it’s like driving with the parking brake on and can cost a mile or two per gallon. Worn spark plugs – A spark plug fi res as many as 3 million times every 1,000 miles, resulting in a lot of heat and electrical and chemical erosion. A dirty spark plug causes misfi ring, which wastes fuel. Spark plugs need to be replaced regularly. Dirty air fi lters – An air fi lter that is clogged with dirt, dust and bugs chokes off the air and creates a “rich” mixture. Replacing a clogged air fi lter can improve gas mileage by as much as 10 percent, saving about 15 cents a gallon. Avoid excessive idling – Sitting idle gets zero miles per gallon. Letting the vehicle warm up for one to two minutes is suffi cient. Observe the speed limit – Gas mileage decreases rapidly at speeds above 60 mph. Each mph driven over 60 will result in an additional 10 cents per gallon. To maintain a constant speed on the highway, cruise control is recommended.
Some statistics were gathered from a U.S. Department of Energy www.fueleconomy.gov.

A letter from Bethlehem Town Hall
Dear OUR TOWNE reader:
For the past eighteen months as your Town’s Supervisor, I have written and spoken about the challenges and opportunities before us and what I believe we should do about them.
Looking back, and forward, I feel that the Town of Bethlehem is in a good position in the three essential areas that should be the litmus test for any local government: fi scal sustainability; quality of life; and, openness and transparency. These are the principles that I will focus on for my remaining six months as Supervisor since they will provide a solid foundation for all of us to build on in the future.
With this background, and my experience as Supervisor, I thought it would be useful to state the values I believe are necessary to make Bethlehem the best Town and local government anywhere.
• Vision: “The Future Begins Now” is always a true statement. In every action we take now, we need to consider future impact. And, at the same time, we should think clearly about the Town we want to be in the future, and govern our current actions accordingly.
• Diffi cult Decisions: We need to have the courage and fl exibility to engage and make diffi cult decisions, because this is how we can best serve the public, face ever-changing challenges and solve problems.
• A Real Team: Elected representatives, appointed offi cials and staff need to always work together as a team. This can only be done when we demonstrate mutual respect for each other and conduct the public’s business, with the highest ethical standards, professionalism and civility.
• Balance: Balance means excellence, not mediocrity. In economic development and planning, managing our budget, serving all areas of our Town, delivering services through larger programs and smaller ones, and in so many other ways, good judgment and balance must go hand-in-hand. I have no doubt that Bethlehem’s future will be bright if we commit our efforts to fi scal stability, quality of life and openness and transparency. Beyond that we must have a vision, be willing to make diffi cult decisions, work together as a real team and demonstrate balance.
Sincerely,
Sam Messina

Like the Weather, Hot Investment Can Cool Off We’re in the “Dog Days” of summer – traditionally the hottest, steamiest time of year. But in a few weeks, the temperatures will begin to cool down. Nature isn’t alone in this heating-and-cooling pattern — you can also fi nd evidence of it in the investment world. To be specifi c, today’s “hot” investments can lose their sizzle quickly — which means that, as an investor, you’ll need to take steps to avoid being left out in the cold.
An investment can become “hot” — that is, its price can shoot up — for any of a number of reasons. For example, a company that provides a well-known product or service may decide to “go public” by making its shares available to investors; when this happens, the stocks become “hot” for a while. An investment may also become hot if a favorable event occurs, as might be the case with a drug company that gains permission to sell a medicine that’s much in demand. And some investments heat up because an “expert” is touting them in the media.
But although different investments may get hot for different reasons, they all share one thing in common: They will cool off. In fact, by the time you and many other investors hear about a hot stock, it may already be cooling off. If you buy into an investment that’s been hot for a while, you should recognize that its “upside potential” may not be what you think.
To help achieve your fi nancial goals, you may be better off by not chasing after hot stocks. Instead, consider these ideas:
Increase share ownership. One key to building wealth is to increase the amount of shares you own in your investments. Hot stocks are often expensive stocks, so you may be limited in the number of shares you can purchase. As an alternative, look for quality investments that are trading at reasonable prices. You might also consider buying additional shares in quality companies you already own.Buy appropriate investments. Even if you can afford to buy some shares in hot stocks, should you? These stocks may not be suitable for your needs, for any number of reasons: too risky for your risk tolerance, too similar to other stocks you already own, and so on. You need to own investments that are appropriate for your individual needs. Of course, you also need to keep in mind that any investment in stocks — whether hot or not — will fl uctuate with changes in market conditions and may be worth more or less than your original investment when you sell.Diversify your holdings. By continually pursuing hot investments, you might end up with an unbalanced, non-diversifi ed portfolio. By diversifying your holdings, you can
help reduce the impact of volatility on your portfolio. However, diversifi cation, by itself, cannot guarantee a profi t or protect against loss.Think long term. Chasing hot stocks is strictly a short-term move. Successful investors adhere to long-term strategies that require discipline, patience and a constant focus on the future. By following these suggestions, you’re unlikely to experience the “thrill” of chasing after hot investments — but you will get the satisfaction of building a portfolio designed to help meet your important investment goals.

Salutations my summer reading friends… In this sweltering “heat dome” where have you taken cooling refuge to read this summer? To you brave the heat and sit poolside, on a sandy beach, or do you seek solace in the shade of a tree with your book? Or are you one who can‛t stand “sticking to the pages” in the humidity and venture to the cooler cave of your basement family room or air-conditioned home? Having spent so many years in the education fi eld, summer became my time where I could spend the most time for pleasure reading. Among the pool towels, sunscreen and goggles there were was a plastic bag holding our books. To this day you can fi nd me at the Bethlehem Town Pool when I get off work with my pool bag, fl ippers, waterproof mp3 player (what a fi nd that was for staying motivated while swimming laps!) and my book. I have notice several of the lifeguards and attendants at Elm St. Park Pool using their down time reading. One guard was “catching up” reading “Angels & Demons” by Dan Brown, while others are reading the Stieg Larsson trilogy “Girl with the Dragon Tattoo”, “Girl Who Played with Fire” and “The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet‛s Nest”. Many are trying to get a head start on the required reading for the upcoming semester as well. At this time I actually have 3 books going at one time, something I really don‛t recommend doing, and will stop once I fi nish one book! I have a book by Kim Harrison (a wonderful paranormal fantasy series that I read while in the store on breaks), Iris Johansen‛s “Blood Game” (a detective Eve Duncan mystery series) and Joe Hill‛s “Horns” (a modern twist on Kafka‛s Metamorphosis, where main character
Iggy awakes to horns protruding from his forehead. Surprisingly, people forget he has the horns as soon as they turn away..oh, one other thing, he can now hear people‛s thoughts and see their past actions and desires!)…OK…if you haven‛t come to realize, my light reads are to many a bit bizarre. As I have said in the past, one‛s reading preferences are a bit like pizza toppings, ice cream fl avor choices or even political views. I may not agree with your choices…but I will defend your right to read whatever you wish! One of my favorite aspects of my job as manager of Tattered Pages Used Books is helping patrons fi nd just the right book and to hear what they have enjoyed recently. I am brought up-to-date on the latest book club selections, what the ‘tweens are reading, what are the hottest new authors, and which time honored classics are still in demand. Recently customers have been in browsing the classic literature section purchasing those books that were required readings long ago. Some just want to revisit books that they enjoyed in the past to see if they view it with a different eye now that they are older. I have a book by Kurt Vonnegut set aside to read this summer because I remember that I always said that it was my favorite of his. Now I will re-read “The Sirens of Titan” to see why I said this, since enough time has past that I can‛t remember why I said this! My oldest son Matt has been in Iraq for several months with the 82nd Airborne (his 4th tour) and I try to send out a box every other week. Along with the usual toiletries and goodies, I send books. He shares them with the guys in his unit, and at times uses them to barter for goods in the town. Recently I sent a mixture of action/adventure/mysteries/ and classics. Along with the expected Tom Clancy, Ken Follett, Robert Ludlum, I also sent “Sherlock Holmes” & Agatha Christie along with some

middle school favorites that may help the guys recall a simpler time when they may have read the following during the summer. I sent along “White Fang”, “Stone Fox”, “Across Five Aprils”, “Shiloh”, “Sounder” and “The Outsiders”. His last quick note to me on Facebook…send shaving cream and more books! One of the phrases I hate hearing from parents of school age children, especially at this time of year, is that their child is bored! I will not jump on my educational soap box over that one! But I will suggest…to parents of students in 2nd grade and above… enhance your child‛s summer reading experience. There are so many ways! They could keep his/her writing skills active while keeping a reading journal as they read their book. After each chapter have them refl ect upon certain topics such as; “How did the main character deal with a problem in this chapter?” “Were there any words that you came across that you didn‛t know? Did you look them up in the dictionary? Could you use context clues to defi ne the word?” “What do you think will happen next?” “What would you like to see happen next?” Your child could create a new dustjacket for the book. They could redesign the cover and write the summary of the story in their own words. They could create a movie poster for the book. They could rate the book and write a critical review. Any way to express their view of the book will keep that reading-writing connection alive. It has been said that students can fall behind as much as 2 months in skills while out of the classroom. This is a great way to stay pro-active while they grow in their reading profi ciency. I have my reading bag fi lled for my vacation with a mix of genres among them: Geraldine Brooks, “People of the Book”, Markus Zuzak, “The Book Thief”, Tatiana de Rosnay, “Sarah‛s Key”, mysteries by: Lisa Gardner, Tess Gerritsen, Michael Connolly, my paranormal guilty pleasures
by: Maryjanice Davidson, Charlaine Harris and Kim Harrison. Whatever your pleasure…take some time to get lost in a good book! We would love to connect you with that next book right here at Tattered Pages Used Books; with over 18,000 titles to choose from all reduced at 20-60% off the original price. An additional 10% off on all books in our classic literature section this month including poetry, plays & short stories! Until next month…enjoy your summer get away in a good book!Trish

ASK
THEPaul Pagnotta, Pharmacist & Co-Owner Four Corners Pharmacy
What do I need for a Summer First-Aid Kit?
IReady for some summer fun in nice weather? Don’t forget to bring along your fi rst aid kit. The American Red Cross recommends having a well stocked fi rst aid kit in your home and car.
What items should be included in a fi rst-aid kit? I
How do I use the medications and products suggested?
Get a pocket fi rst aid book for the kit to be prepared and read the medication box to know when to use them and how to use. More importantly, read when NOT to use them. For example, it is recommended not to use anti-diarrhea medication in someone with a high fever. And, some patients with certain disease states or other medications should not take motion sickness or allergy medications. Check with your doctor or Four Corners Pharmacist for your specifi c conditions. How can I avoid motion sickness while traveling in a car, boat, airplane, or train?
There are a few things you can try to avoid motion sickness. First, face forward looking at the outdoors and look far toward the horizon. Get in the middle of whatever you are riding to get the least amount of movement. Some people fi nd settling their stomach with dry crackers or bland pretzels helps ease the nausea. There are non-medicated wrist bands that work for many people available at a low cost. Non- prescription and prescription medications can be taken before the trip starts, however, they can make you drowsy and should not be used in certain people. Ask your doctor or pharmacist and read the package.
What sort of bug repellent should I put in my fi rst aid kit?
Insect repellants containing 20-30% DEET is effective at preventing mosquito and tick bites. It is safe to use infrequently and in low concentrations. DEET should be applied only to exposed areas of the skin and not underneath clothes. Reapply it every few hours (check the product label). To limit exposure to DEET do not apply it to broken, wounded or sun-burned skin and wash the treated area and clothes with soap and water after returning indoors. Concentrations above 30% DEET are not recommended for prolonged or frequent use, but can be used for activities where high concentrations of ticks or mosquitoes are found. For children (under age 5) use products containing less than 10% of DEET and try to avoid repeated applications. Spray the product on your hands fi rst and then apply it to your child to avoid children transferring the product from their hands to their eyes, nose or mouth. Alternatives to DEET, such as picaridin and oil of lemon eucalyptus can repel mosquitoes but may not repel ticks.
How should we manage sunburn?
If you could not avoid sunburn by using a broad spectrum UVA UVB sunscreen, you can reduce the pain and heat of a mild to moderate sunburn. Apply cool, wet compresses to the affected area and an aloe based lotion or spray can soothe the pain. Over the counter sprays containing lidocaine, a local anesthetic, can help alleviate the heat and pain associated with sunburn. It is important to stay hydrated so make sure to drink plenty of fl uids when healing sunburn. For continued sunburn pain, over the counter medications such as ibuprofen and naproxen are also helpful in reducing pain and infl ammation. However, be sure to read the package label on how to use these medications safely. During the recuperation process avoid further sun exposure.
What else can I do to protect my family on a summer vacation?
There are many things you can do to protect your family. Having a fi rst-aid kit is no substitute for prevention. The best way to deal with injury and illness is to prevent it. Remember to use the proper protective equipment (helmets, padding), get proper rest, don’t drive when tired, and take a cell phone for emergencies. Consider taking a Red Cross First Aid or CPR class to better handle family emergencies. You can also read reference books about plants and bugs to help better protect your family from common summer ailments. And always be aware of your family’s sensitivities and needs so you can protect him or her as necessary.

Mercato’s waitress saves a customer’s lifeWhen Tracie Tilgner of Delmar swallowed wrong during dinner at Mercato’s Restaurant & Pizzeria in Delmar, a piece of meat became lodged in her windpipe. Choking and unable to breath, she panicked. “People were screaming. A server came into the kitchen and said, ‘A customer is dying!’” says Tony Celik, the restaurant’s owner. Victoria Celik, the owner’s wife, had not performed the Heimlich maneuver since learning it in dental school. Celik grabbed Tilgner, gave her a big squeeze from behind and out popped the food. “A local waitperson saved my life, and I would really like to somehow publicly express my thanks to her. Tilgner says, “Words can’t express the gratitude my family and I feel towards her, a true hero.” By T.U. Senior Writer -Steve Barnes

The Importance of Play Play is not just the opposite of work. Play is as intrinsic and natural an activity as eating and sleeping; and we never really outgrow our need for it or the benefi ts it affords us!
I love seeing the kids at the end of our street playing pick-up games without an adult supervising. For two hours per week this summer I've had the pleasure of working with a small group of 11 and 12 year old boys make up games, loudly negotiating the rules until they reach consensus. We adults (well-intentioned and enthusiastic) too often involve themselves in their children's play. When adults direct all of a child's games or sports, kids lose an opportunity to learn those skills, and there's a sense that the game belongs to the parent as much as to the child.
While I'm not proposing a "Lord of the Flies" childhood for our kids, it does seem that some kids have forgotten, or never learned, how to play by themselves. We've all heard the cry from child experts about how children are over-programmed and over-stimulated, and mostly rely on outside sources - most often electronic - to entertain them. (A mom I know had a kid so "addicted" to Nintendo that if he misbehaved she'd punish him by making him go outside and ride his bike!) Many children don't have the
free time as they need in order to develop an "inner life" to feel comfortable and happy entertaining themselves for any length of time.
Having grown up in the '60s in a neighborhood with lots of kids, being outside was almost always our fi rst choice. Our parents weren't involved unless someone was hurt, which surprisingly didn't happen a lot (and if it did, made for a great dramatic, infl ated story!). If I was bored, I would be reluctant to whine about it because I knew my parents would suggest their favorite antidote which was, consistently, chores. Flopping down on the grass in my back yard and looking up at the sky, I wondered if it was possible to literally die from boredom - it certainly felt painful enough to me. Eventually my boredom became unbearable, and I'd think of something to do. If my parents felt it was their job to come up with play ideas for me and I never was allowed to feel excruciatingly bored (because when you're a kid, it IS excruciating) and I never had a chance to "bottom out" I would have missed out.
Giving kids the freedom and time to explore their world is essential to the development of their self-confi dence and independence. Exploring their neighborhoods on foot, bike or skateboard, getting around under their own steam, fosters a sense of confi dence and competence. For safety's sake, parents or another adult should be around and accessible, but not always directly involved. Take your kids hiking or camping without it turning the experience into a "lesson".
As adults we need time to play too. Think about what you liked to do as a kid and fi nd a way to do it again. Ride your bike, walk, hike, get away if you can, or explore this great area we live in. Or try a grownup version of what you loved to do as a kid. If you don't want to climb a neighbor's tree, try rock-climbing. There are a slew of websites devoted to getting adults out to play reconnect with the natural world. MovNat, Explore Your Nature, http://movnat.com/ and Mark's Daily Apple. Primal Living in the Modern World, http://www.marksdailyapple.com/ are two you might want to check out for ideas.
At the very least, make sure your family's every waking hour isn't scheduled and get outside year round. Start by turning off the TV and computer for at least two nights a week. One exception - if you have to schedule free time, go for it!
And if anyone whines that they're bored, you can always offer them my parents' alternative!

by Dan Rain, Town Recycling Coordinator
I interviewed Nan Lanahan and Jason Gallo at Parks and Recreation to fi nd out what their department is up to, and catch a glimpse behind the scenes.
Briefl y, what are your backgrounds?Nan Lanahan, Administrator: She started in 1988 as Asst. Administrator, and was promoted in 2001. Nan has a Bachelors of Science in Recreation from Indiana University. She’d been in the business side of recreation for years, but wanted to get into public service, and this was an opportunity to use her education in her career. Jason Gallo, Assistant Administrator: He started in 2005 after having worked for a municipality in Westchester County for fi ve years. Jason has a Parks and Recreation Management degree from SUNY Cortland, and his entire career has been in Parks and Rec. He also serves as Co-chair of the Town’s “PaTHs 4 Bethlehem” Advisory Committee, along with Rob Leslie. Other full-time administrative staff includes Noreen Dlugolecki, Front end specialist, and Lisa Ellis, Account clerk. Maintenance staff includes Jim Reagan, Superintendent, Bill Allen, Don Glasstetter, Steve Hummel, Rob Rarick, and Scott Turner
What do you enjoy most about public service?Nan: The opportunity to make a difference in people’s lives, work with so many different people, and experience the diversity of the job. Jason: Directly impacting residents by providing programs and activities, and connecting people with Town resources, from new folks just learning what we offer, to lifelong residents discovering a new program at a park they’ve never visited.
What do you fi nd most frustrating? Nan: They don’t have their own facility to run activities and events, such as a community center. They use Town Hall, the schools, and the one room at the offi ce the best they can, but the other facilities’ own events take precedence for these spaces.
Jason: That he can’t control the weather and its impact on his work. Jason jokes that he also has a meteorology degree, because he has to forecast weather frequently; has had some ups and downs in this regard. “You do all that planning and publicity ahead of time and then lose that momentum; can’t follow through with execution due to the weather.”
What is at the top of your department’s wish list, if you had the budget to support it?
1) Rebuild the pool complex building. It was built in the early 1970’s—and there have been many technological and architectural developments since that time, and the building’s infrastructure is in constant need of repair and maintenance. 2) Build a new club house at Colonial Acres Golf Course. It needs a larger, well constructed “pro shop” and bathrooms. Bringing sewer to the site is one of biggest obstacles. 3) Restore the shoreline at Henry Hudson Park. A study was just completed, but to do it properly carries a $2 million price tag.
What should people know about right now?• The pool is open until Labor Day this year!• The pool party initiative introduced this summer. People can reserve a space in the pool area, bring up to 20 guests and swim all day for one price;
food packages are also available. is The site includes a large grassy area for games and a sheltered area. • Outings at Colonial Acres – 16 or more people in a group get a special rate. • Fall Park Playbook is coming out mid-August. Highlights include:Youth Golf Tournament-October 1Halloween Hay Day-October 16• SAFE Program (Sports Are For Everyone)-This unique program offers a seasonal sport to anyone challenged with a special need.
Which parks are the best kept secrets?Henry Hudson Park, though it is catching on—offers a tranquil setting along the Hudson River. They just built a new fi shing platform funded by the DEC Estuary Program. Maple Ridge Park – the newest park offers one of the best playgrounds and has a pavilion that can be rented. It’s the perfect place for a birthday party or family gathering.
What is one thing you’ve learned while working here?Nan: “People come fi rst. Be
fl exible and adapt to change. New trends in our profession arise constantly and we have to be ready.”Jason: “Don’t trivialize other people’s recreational play. We have to take it seriously and make sure it’s well managed and coordinated so they can have the fun with out worrying. When you have to cancel something, you then realize how important that experience is to other people.”
Anything else to add?Nan: “We strive to be the community’s recreation center. We offer diverse programs, a variety of different parks and affordable prices. We are open to the community and are not membership driven… we even accept non-residents in activities.”Jason: “We urge residents to use the Town website, www.townofbethlehem.org, to obtain information and register on-line.”
