Notes from the Supervisor’s Offi ceThe change of seasons comes upon us quickly each

November, and things are busy all over Guilderland. The Guilderland Highway Department is in the midst of its annual leaf collection operation. The large leaf vacuum trucks are traveling throughout all of the neighborhoods in the community where they are able to operate. Pick-up schedules were included in the Town newsletter, which was mailed to our residents in September. If you didn’t make a note of the collection schedule for your neighborhood, you can check for the correct date for your street on the Town website, www.townofguilderland.org, or you can call the Town Highway Department direct at 861-5108. Please show your concern for the safety of both the Highway Department work crews and of your neighbors (particularly the children!), and don’t make leaf and brush piles or stacks of leaf bags so high that they obstruct the vision of drivers, bicyclists, and pedestrians. Also, please remember that brush placed by the side of the road for pickup needs to be cut into lengths no longer than 4 feet, and tied securely into bundles that can be picked up by a single worker.November is a good time for an enjoyable hike on the trails in Guilderland’s Tawasentha Park and Winter Recreation Area, particularly on a crisp, sunny day. We have nearly fi ve miles of trails available for your use, and there are several spots out on the trails where hikers can enjoy beautiful fall views. Please feel free to bring your pets, but we ask that you be careful to observe the Town’s leash and cleanup laws. We sometimes receive phone calls from residents about playbacks of the meetings of the various Town boards. The schedule of live broadcasts and playbacks on

Channel 17 is available on the Town website. The Town Board meets on the fi rst and third Tuesdays of the month at 7:30, and meetings are broadcast live, with replays aired at 1:00 and 7:30 P.M. on the next Friday, and at 7:00 on the next Sunday. The Zoning Board of Appeals meets on the fi rst and third Wednesdays of the month at 7:30, with the meetings broadcast live, then replayed at 1:00 P.M. on the following Thursday and at 7:00 P.M. the following Saturday. The Planning Board meets at 7:30 P.M. on the second and fourth Wednesdays of the month, with a live broadcast at that time and rebroadcasts aired the following Thursday at 1:00 P.M. and the following Saturday at 7:00 P.M. The Altamont Village Board meets the fi rst Tuesday of the month, and rebroadcasts of those meetings are aired on Channel 17 at 11:00 A.M. and 5:00 P.M. on the Thursday and Saturday after the meetings. The 2011 Guilderland Town Supervisor’s Draft Budget has been submitted to the Town Board. Residents who are interested in seeing the details of the budget can view them on the Town website. Copies may also be obtained at the Town Clerk’s offi ce. The budget will be voted on by the Town Board at its meeting on November 4. Preparing a fi scally sound budget in an economic climate that continues to be diffi cult across both the state and the nation has been a real challenge. We have taken a cautious approach to estimating 2011 revenues, and have been equally conservative in approving spending requests in creating the 2011 budget. The Supervisor’s Draft Budget includes no raises for Town employees or elected offi cials, but I am pleased to report to you that the proposed budget also does not require any reductions in Town services. Residents should also note that the draft budget calls for the current Town tax rate of 26 cents per thousand dollars of assessed valuation to once again remain unchanged in 2011.November is the month when Thanksgiving occurs. We all have a lot to be thankful for in a community like Guilderland. I would like to take this opportunity to extend my personal best wishes and those of the staff of the Town of Guilderland for a safe and enjoyable Thanksgiving for all of our Town’s residents and their families.

Message from the Chamber...Dear Readers-SHOP LOCAL. I was asked by a “shop local” group if I am doing a shop local campaign and it got me thinking about it. In the chamber, our members are places like Wal-mart and Robinsons Hardware; Pizzeria Uno and MezzaNotte. Both places employ local residents, both businesses pay local taxes. The difference is that a larger amount of your dollar stays here with a locally owned business, but if we don’t shop

at Wal-mart and it closes, our residents who work there are unemployed, and people who need to shop there to save money are out of luck. My point is this: shop local when you can, and internet when you have to! Support the businesses that support us.

We ALWAYS have great things going on at the chamber that involve highlighting many local businesses. Our Women’s Business Group monthly meetings are going every month to different women-owned or run businesses, our members will be displaying baskets of goods at the chamber for our Holiday Basket Raffl e, and we WILL be helping you shop local with our Holiday Gift Guide. Also, our next two mixers will feature the best of Creo (on Nov. 9) and Hana Japanese Steakhouse (on Dec 7); both extremely popular local restaurants.

Tues. Nov. 9-5:30-7 pm- GCC Networking Mixer at Creo Restaurant. Come taste the creations of Chef Andrew Plummer and meet your next customer! 1475 Western Ave. $10 members, $15 non-members.

Thurs. Nov. 18-8-9 am- GCC Women’s Business Group Hits the Road. This month we are featuring Different Drummer’s Kitchen in Stuyvesant Plaza, 1475 Western Ave. Meet successful manager Michele Weiser and enjoy a casual atmosphere of browsing and networking! Free to attend!

Tues. Dec. 7-5:30-7pm- GCC Holiday Party at Hana Japanese Steakhouse-1620 Western Ave. Join us for a fantastic array of sushi, hibachi and drink specials. $10 members, $15 non-members.

Register at www.guilderlandchamber.com/calendar.html or call 456-6611.

Have a great Thanksgiving and beginning to your holiday season.

COMMUNITY CAREGIVERS TO HONOR THE ENTERPRISE, CONGRESSMAN PAUL TONKO AND STEVEN P. BOYLE/ST. PETER’S HEALTH CARE SERVICES AT NOV. 6th FUNDRAISER

James Gardner, The Enterprise

Congressman Paul D. TonkoCongressman Paul D. Tonko

GUILDERLAND, NY (Monday, Nov. 1, 2010) — Community Caregivers will hold its 16th Annual Gala on Saturday, Nov. 6 from 6-8 p.m. at Albany Country Club. During the event, one of two fundraisers held each year to benefi t programs and services delivered by Community Caregivers, honorees will be recognized for their contributions and support of the organization’s mission — to help individuals of all ages maintain their independence, dignity and quality of life within their homes and communities.

The Enterprise, an independent weekly publication, will receive the Victor G. Ross Founders Award. Enterprise owners James and Wanda Gardner have been supporters of Community Caregivers since the organization began “Neighbors Helping Neighbors” in the Village of Altamont in (give year). In addition to the Village, The Enterprise also covers the Towns of Guilderland, New Scotland and the Hilltowns in Albany County.

“We delight in running news of the Community Caregivers and the column Community Caregivers’ Corner, which keep our readers informed of valuable volunteer services,” said The Enterprise Editor Melissa Hale-Spencer.

Also honored that night will be Congressman Paul D. Tonko, who represents the 21st District and will receive the Public Service Award. While known for his expertise on energy policy, Tonko, who previously served in the New York State Assembly from 1983 to 2007, is also a strong advocate for affordable and accessible heathcare

for all. He was a major proponent of Timothy’s Law, which provided for mental health parity in New York state, and has always promoted fair and equitable healthcare policies that strengthen our communities and protect our most vulnerable citizens. Furthermore, Tonko and his staff have been instrumental in assisting Caregivers navigate the potential federal grants and funding sources.

Steven P. Boyle, President and CEO of St. Peter’s Hospital Care Services, and St. Peter’s Health Care Services

Recognized at the gala will also be Steven P. Boyle, president and CEO of St. Peter’s Hospital Care Services, and St. Peter’s Health Care Services - one of upstate New York’s largest health care systems.

Boyle, who is responsible for an organization with 4,500 employees and an annual budget of $450 million, will accept the Joseph A. Bosco Community Service Award. Through the years Community Caregivers has partnered with St. Peter’s Health Care Services on many services and programs, which has strengthened C a r e g i v e r s ’ reputation in the Capital Region.

Boyle is currently a principal in discussions with St. Peter’s, Northeast Health and Seton Health to merge their services into a single, regional healthcare system. When the merger is completed, this entity will be the area’s largest and most-diverse healthcare system throughout Tech Valley.

Sponsors for A Harvest Happening include the Times Union, Adirondack Environmental Services, Wells Fargo Advisors, Robert Marini Builders, Selkirk Cogen Partners and Senior Whole Health.

Tickets for the gala are $100 per person. A cocktail reception, sit down dinner, and silent and live auctions are planned. Please contact (518) 456-2898 to make your reservation.

We Fix iPhones ContestLiberteks computer services at 1648 Western Ave. has recently introduced the “We Fix iPhones! contest. According to owner Larry Zimbler, Liberteks wanted a good tagline for the window sign in front of the store. “Unless that sign was sitting on Venice Beach or selling surf wax, it was a poor headline for Western Ave., even if we wanted to catch the eye of University at Albany drive-bys. So I wanted to ask the members of Chamber and Guilderland residents, what is a decent message for a Window sign on Western Ave. opposite Crossgates Mall?, “Zimbler said. The winner will receive a free iPhone repair from Liberteks. Entries can be made by visiting Liberteks.com by phone or by visiting the

store. Call Liberteks at 452-0550.

Q. Do you sponsor any local teams, if so which ones?A. Albany Golf Tour

Q. What do you love most about the business?A. I think I most enjoy sorting out people’s and business’ technology needs, and developing a solution that helps makes their lives simpler and more productive.

Q. What do you want the community to know about you?A. Stop by at our Western Ave. store and check us out -- new notebook and desktop computers, software, services, and so much more.

We are big fans of the Guilderland community.

The Season of Apprecia on and Selfl essnessBy Master Rice

When Halloween is over we all start to think about Thanksgiving. This makes November the perfect month to focus on apprecia on. We all have mes when we take things for granted, but we can all take a moment to stop and think of the things and people we have around us and be thankful for them.

All too o en people jump to consider the nega ve side of the things that happen throughout the day. Considering the posi ve side of the aspects of our lives helps to improve our mood and makes us be er

colleagues, be er friends, be er siblings, and even be er passersby. Having a posi ve a tude is absolutely one way to show apprecia on.

Consider the child that has just received a gi or new item but then whines about something else they want or how that thing they just got is not good enough. Some mes this can even happen to adults. Maintaining a posi ve a tude about what you have and what you are able to get, will clearly demonstrate apprecia on for it.

The best way to infl uence people around you for showing apprecia on by posi ve a tude is in leading by example. Some mes it is diffi cult, but in the

end it will pay off as you surround yourself with people that are posi ve in nature. Help your children by being posi ve around them about the things that happen to

you. I know some of the things that happen to us as adults are not always so posi ve, but the children in our lives don’t really need to hear about it. By protec ng them from the

nega vity, and presen ng things in a posi ve way, we are actually impar ng to them be er posi ve coping mechanisms for their future.

Take advantage of the approaching holiday season as an opportunity to demonstrate how thankful you are for all the things you have and for the love of the people you are surrounded by. A posi ve a tude can be contagious and you can help spread it through your own community. Small gestures can add up to the kind of signifi cant changes we can all be grateful for.

Master Rice is a 4th degree Black Belt in Taekwondo, teaches math at Guilderland High School and owns Guilderland Mar al Arts with his sister Chris ne Clark.

Guilderland Elementary School PTA is having Family Movie Night Friday, November 19th. We will be showing the movie Toy Story 3. Doors will open at 6:15 and the movie will start at 6:30. More details will come home via pack back mail next month. Thank you and

we hope to see you there.

Ziti DinnerFUNDRAISER

For the Crux familyto support a local young mother’s

battle against Leukemia

Hosted by the MOMS Club of Guilderland/Capital District

Sat., Nov. 20th 5-8pmFort Hunter Firehouse

3525 Carman Rd., Guilderland

$7-Adults, $5-Children (10 and under) and Seniors

**Many raffles, including 50/50**

As a mother of two young children, I can’t imagine being separated from them for a long period of time. Unfortunately for my friend, Jennifer Crux, this heart-wrenching scenario has become a terrible reality. Jenn, who is only 32, has recently been diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. For the past month she has been and continues to be hospitalized while undergoing intensive chemotherapy treatment at Albany

Medical Center. Being separated from her two young children, AJ (3) and Alexis (1) has been very difficult to endure.

Although Jenn’s husband Ray is employed full time, their insurance will only cover a portion of the extensive medical bills that are already piling up. And if her cancer does not go into remission, she may have to endure another two full years of grueling chemotherapy, with the possibility of a bone marrow transplant. With this comes the stress of more debt brought on by the overwhelming medical bills.

As fellow members of the Guilderland/Capital District MOMS Club, we have decided to try to alleviate some

of the financial burden from the Crux family by hosting a Ziti dinner fundraiser at the Fort Hunter Firehouse on Carman Rd. in Guilderland on Saturday, November 20th from 5-8pm.

The reason I am writing this letter to you is to ask for a donation for supplies or gift cards for this event. At this point we are in need of things such as: Ziti, sauce, Mozzarella cheese, Italian bread, butter, bagged salad, cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, serving tins, salad dressings, paper products, tableware, table cloths, milk, juice and dessert items. We would also like to advertise at your store if at all possible. If you are able to help in any way, please contact me at (518) 630-0132 or at [email protected] or at 615 Maywood Ave., Schenectady, NY 12303. In addition, each organization or company that donates something will be recognized for their generosity on placemats at the fundraiser. This event is being hosted by the Guilderland/Capital District MOMS Club, a non-profit organization. Our non-profit number is 16-1604397.

Thank you for your time and consideration, in helping the Crux Family in their battle against this horrible disease.

November Reading from Your Library: Guilderland's Gathering Place

by Barbara Nichols Randall, Director, Guilderland Public Library

This month the library and this column are focusing onKorean American authors, Korean language, history andculture as well as the Korean Conflict.

LanguageDid you know that the Korean language (Hangeul) is aphonetic language just like English? The Library has books, CDs and a database for learningKorean. Some of our books, like Aeyungs Dream by PaekMin are bilingual which allows both Korean speakers andstudents to enjoy the same stories. We also have acollection of adult Korean language books and even threeof the Harry Potter books in Korean! We have a number ofCD based language learning materials both for learningEnglish or Korean.

The database is called Mangolanguages and with a validGuilderland Library card you can learn Korean at your ownpace and at home.

CultureWe own books and DVDs that highlight the culture, customs and Cuisine of Korea. As a lover of CucumberKimchi, Dduk Gook (Rice Cake Soup), Bibim Bap (MixedRice) and Bulgogi (Barbequed Beef) I enjoyed both therecipes and interspersed cultural stories in Cecelia Hae JimLee’s eating Korean. The customs and culture of theKorean people are found in many of our books for bothadults’ and children’s collections. An interesting book, given the current transition in North Korean leadership isThe Hidden People of North Korea a coauthored book byRalph Hassig and Kongdan Oh.

HistoryAuthor Linda Sue Park has written many books about bothhistory, and being a Korean American. Although primarilywritten as fiction for a juvenile audience her well writtenstories can teach us all.

Korean AmericansIn addition to Linda Sue Park, some of the other KoreanAmerican authors whose works we own are Chang RaeLee, Gus Lee, Leonard Chang, and An Na.

War

It has been common in the last few years to call the KoreanConflict “The Forgotten War”. For millions of us, it willnever be forgotten. It was a war that is still being wagedtoday and changed the Korean peninsula and peopledramatically.

On November 6th the Library will be having a programfeaturing a DVD Chosin by Brian Iglesias. In the winter of1950, at the height of America’s ‘forgotten war,’ 15,000U.S. Soldiers and Marines found themselves surroundedand by an overwhelming force of communist Chinesesoldiers in the frozen mountains of North Korea. After 60years of silence, the men who survived the ChosinReservoir Campaign finally tell their story. See a screeningof the prize winning documentary made by Brian Iglesiasand Anton Sattler, Iraq war veterans. The movie conveysthe tale of bravery exhibited and hardship endured bythese men. Local veterans were interviewed for this movieand some of them will be on hand following the screening.

PUSHING AND “POPPING” NOT FOR YOU? NO PROBLEM!By Dr. Jennifer L. Noonan, Spinal Wellness Center, Western Ave, Guilderland

One of the many amazing things about chiropractic care and The Spinal Wellness Center is that there are many incredibly effective forms of treatment available to our patients. For those who are apprehensive about the more traditional “osseous” (bone) techniques, we offer non and low force adjusting, soft-tissue only techniques, “Arthro-Stim” instrument adjusting and cold laser therapy! If you need chiropractic care, there is a style of adjusting you will be comfortable with and that can help you. Here are some details on a few of the techniques offered at The Spinal Wellness Center.

COLD LASER THERAPY is a form of low-level light therapy that stimulates damaged cells to repair thereby accelerating healing and reducing pain and inflammation. It is highly effective for situations

such as carpal tunnel syndrome, arthritis, nerve pain, acute injuries and even headaches.

“ARTHRO STIM” instrument adjusting can be used on nearly any situation that traditional adjusting would be used, but without the push and release “pop” that many people are afraid of. The “arthro stim” applies gentle motion into a joint or trigger point with amazing results. Perfect for children and older adults too.

NON AND LOW FORCE ADJUSTING . There are so many options it would be impossible to talk about them all. I have been using flexion/distraction technique for years for herniated and degenerated discs, spinal stenosis and arthritis. Very gentle and very effective. Non-force mobilization and trigger point therapy for low back pain, neck pain and headache sufferers. SOT( sacro-occipital technique) is wonderful for pregnant women or others who prefer less hands-on.

If you have been thinking of getting chiropractic care, but are apprehensive about the technique, please call Dr. Noonan today to schedule a complimentary consultation about non and low force treatment options. Please call 869-3415 and mention this article.

Dr. Noonan resides here in Guilderland with her husband David, who is also a Chiropractor, and her sons Connor, Noah and Aiden. She is a graduate of Guilderland High School, SUNY Cortland and New York Chiropractic College. She has served families in the community with chiropractic for over 17 years.

Call 869-3415 for a consultation.

FARNSWORTH MIDDLE SCHOOL AWARDED NATIONAL KIDS CARE WEEK GRANT

GUILDERLAND, NY—The Guilderland Central School District is excited to announce that Farnsworth Middle School recently received a Kids Care Week 2010 mini-grant in the amount of $250 to implement a service project in celebration of Kids Care Week, October 17th to October 23rd. This year's theme is “Make your mark on the world: Go the extra mile.”

FMS is one of only 200 honorees from across the country, and will use the funding to prepare its organic garden for the winter by purchasing the necessary materials and supplies. Students will be working in the garden through the week of October 17. Then on Saturday, October 23, students and parents will work together to put the final touches on preparing the garden for the winter.

"Students have grown and donated over 3000 pounds of organic produce to the Regional Food Bank this year," said organic garden co-director Dr. Alan Fiero. "This grant will help us prepare to make next year another success."

Kids Care Week is a program of generationOn, in partnership with Hasbro Children’s Fund. “generationOn is proud to honor our mini-grant recipients and continue to offer youth the tools necessary to make a difference in their communities,” said Kathy Saulitis, vice-president of family & youth engagement at generationOn. “Kids Care Week is a chance to celebrate their wonderful accomplishments and inspire others to explore local needs and get involved at a kid-friendly level.”

During Kids Care Week, generationOn is asking all young people across the nation to make their mark on the world by helping others. Kids Care Week culminates on Make a Difference Day, a national day of doing good.
