Notes from the Supervisor’s Offi ce

Henry

Montgomery Tree Service

As I travel around in Guilderland, I’m happy to see the usual signs that spring is with us at long last. Baseball and softball games

are in full swing in our Town parks. Lawn and gardening work, as well as all sorts of home improvement projects, is happening throughout our neighborhoods. The fairways and greens at Western Turnpike are full of golfers. Perhaps best of all, the weather has turned to what most of us would call springtime.

Guilderland’s fi rst 2011 Household Hazardous Waste Day event will be held from 8:00 A.M. until 2:00 P.M. on Saturday, May 21 at the Town Highway Department, which is at 6363 French’s Mill Road in Guilderland Center. Residents will be able to drive in at the Highway Garage and have all their materials removed from their vehicle for disposal in an environmentally appropriate manner. A wide range of materials are eligible for disposal, including: automotive fl uids; insecticides and pesticides; double-bagged asbestos; fl uorescent tubes; insecticides and pesticides; pool and cleaning chemicals; auto and marine batteries; wood stains and preservatives; propane tanks; and all types of paints. We cannot accept certain items at the event, including: explosives (including fi reworks); compressed gases; toxic or radioactive substances; and medical waste. In order to participate, residents will need to present a coupon, which can be obtained from the Town Clerk’s Offi ce or the Town Transfer Station by presenting a vehicle registration showing your Guilderland residency. More information is available at www.townofguilderland.org. We would like to again acknowledge the grant assistance that the NY State Department of Environmental Conservation provides for this program.

Guilderland’s Western Turnpike Golf Course is open for the season, off ering a friendly environment where golfers can enjoy play on our well-maintained course. Guilderland residents can play at a reduced rate if they present a resident identifi cation card, which they can obtain at the Pro Shop at the golf course when they present two forms of identifi cation. Information on course conditions, hours, rates, and seasonal specials can be obtained at www.westernturnpike.com, or by calling the Pro Shop at 456-0786.

Registration is now open for Guilderland’s popular summer recreation program, which includes both a day camp and a wide range of sports and activity camps. A brochure describing the programs was recently mailed to Town residents. All the details are also available at www.guilderlandrec.com, where you can sign up on-line for any of our programs. A number of these programs are fully booked well before the end of the school year, so please be sure to check the off erings and sign up early. You can call the Guilderland Parks and Recreation Offi ce at 456-3150 with any questions you may have about a particular program off ering.

The 2011 schedule for the Guilderland Performing Arts Center is now available on the Town website. The season will run from mid-June through late August at our lovely facility in Tawasentha Park, and will include a broad range of musical programs, featuring three performances by our own Guilderland Town Band. The Performing Arts Center will also host the annual “Nervosity” concert, featuring local high school bands, as well as the Family Players’ presentation of “Hello Dolly”.

Tawasentha Park will also host “Mud Mania”, a family-friendly obstacle run for children and adults, on Saturday June 18. The event will include multiple races, beginning at noon, and will include music, food, and family activities in addition to the racing. Information and registration forms are available at www.guilderlandrec.com.

I hope that all of our residents are beginning to enjoy all of the activities we have to off er here in Guilderland during the warmer weather. Please drive safely as you enjoy the season.

Saturday April 30th was black belt training camp and testing for Guilderland Martial Arts. This month I thought I would

write a little about what it means to become a black belt. We all hear about black belts all the time but I believe there is a cloud of mystery surrounding what it really means. First of all it is very important to understand that the requirements for achieving black belt are diff erent among the various martial arts and among diff erent schools within any particular martial art. Some schools qualify black belts according to their own standards. Others conform to national or international guidelines established by some governing body of the particular martial art.GMA follows the guidelines of the national organization USA Taekwondo which falls under the jurisdiction of the US Olympic Committee and ultimately the World Taekwondo Federation and the Kukkiwon in Korea. That is why the style of Taekwondo we study at GMA is called “Olympic Style” Taekwondo; ultimately any student that studies this style could compete internationally and at the Olympics. Our guidelines for black belt are clear and involve particular kicks, punches, blocks, board breaks, forms(memorized fl oor exercises), self defense

moves, and sparring. Once a student completes the building of the curriculum through the color belts, they review the curriculum for about 6 months to a year and perform it for their black belt test. It really is that simple, no mystery. But that is not what being a black belt really means to me

and I hope to all of my students as well. The physical achievement of the curriculum is essential, but the character demonstrated by the students is what really makes them black belts. If you have followed my other articles you read about integrity, perseverance, courage and more. Also very important to black belts is the need to lead. The most important part is leading by example and being able to work with other students and give back to them all of the things learned. The concept of giving back to the community of martial artists and the community at large is a key element. One of my young students raised about $7,000 for children’s cancer research by acquiring

donors for having her beautiful hair shaved off and becoming nearly bald. That is an example of what it really means to be a black belt.

Master Rice owns Guilderland Martial Arts and holds a 4th degree Black Belt in Taekwondo. Master Rice is also a Math teacher at Guilderland High School. Guilderland Martial Arts off ers classes starting at age 4 as well as an afterschool program and summer camps. For more information please call 690-1269.

Q A Capital Hearing Center1855 Western Avenue, Albany NY 12203

Q. What year did the business start? Capital Hearing Center has been under the same ownership for over 30 years.

Q. Where are you located and were you always in the same loca on? We are located at 1855 Western Avenue, one mile west of Crossgates Mall. We also have offi ces in Schenectady and Amsterdam. We opened the Western Avenue offi ce in 2005. Prior to that we operated out of our Schenectady offi ce at 30 Jay Street, across from the Post Offi ce in downtown Schenectady.

Q. How and why did you get into the business? Roland Bourgeois, the father of Hearing Instrument Specialist Robert Bourgeois opened a hearing aid offi ce in Albany, many years ago and when Robert, his son, completed his commitment to the US Navy, he joined the business.

Q. Do you have many regular customers? Is there anything specifi c that they are always coming in for? We have wonderful customers. We love them all. We see them every four months, just to check to make sure that the hearing aids that they are wearing are in good working order. That, of course, gives us a chance to visit and to chat. Many of our clients are like family to us.

Q. Are you known for anything special? We dis nguish our selves in the marketplace by off ering a 100% money back guarantee. Most hospitals and hearing aid businesses will keep a dispensing fee if you return a hearing aid a er purchase and that can be upwards of $400. We don’t do that. We also off er a 3 year warranty on all products and, on average, the lowest pricing in the area. We also provide 4 month checkups on the hearing aids at no addi onal charge and we provide free ba eries for life.

Q. Are you doing anything new? We off er a full line of the newest and best technology in hearing aids in the market place today. We only carry what we consider to be the best products out there.

Q. What hours are you open?A. We are in our Albany offi ce everyday, 9-4 and a er hour and Saturday appointments by special arrangement.

Q. Do you sponsor any local teams, if so which ones? A. No one has ever asked us to sponsor a team! We might be interested in doing that!

Q. What do you love most about the business?A. The people….hands down….the people are the best thing about this business. Through the years we have made many new friends and we have met some of the nicest people in the world.

Q. What do you think is your biggest challenge with the business?A. The biggest challenge in this business is that no one wants to wear a hearing aid! We do our level best to make sure that they are fi t properly, and that means making the instruments as inconspicuous as possible. But, for all of us, a hearing aid is not something we look forward to wearing. We totally understand that and we work very hard to help our clients to become comfortable with the decision to choose to enrich their lives with be er hearing through the use of hearing aids.

Q. What do you want the community to know about you?A. We want the community to know that we know what we are doing. We have been fi ng hearing aids for a long me. We also want them to know that if they are not happy, we are not happy and we go that extra mile to make sure that they are happy.

BACK SMART GARDENING By Dr. Jennifer L. Noonan, Spinal Wellness Center, Western Ave, Guilderland

Once again, I submitted this month’s article at the ninth hour, mostly

because I couldn’t drag myself away from my garden. Aft er what many

would agree was the worst winter in decades, even weeding was gloriously

satisfying. So at the end of a day of bending, pulling, pushing and lift ing, how

does one come away with minimal back and body aches?

1. Don’t jump right into it. Remember, this is an activity your body hasn’t

done for 7 loooong months. Take it slow and warm up a little. Perform a few

upper body and low back stretches to prepare for the work ahead. It only takes

a few minutes and will be well worth it.

2. Take frequent breaks. Trust me, the work will be there when you get back.

Work in 20- 30 minute increments. Go in the house and stretch or even apply an ice pack. Th en do another 20-30 minutes.

3. Change positions frequently. Use a knee pad to kneel or sit on. Don’t bend over at the waist! Changing positions frequently will

prevent one muscle group from getting over worked. So alternate kneeling, sitting and going on all fours. Th is way, diff erent muscles

and joints share the load with minimal strain to your back.

4. Avoid the bend/twist and twist/throw combos. Th ese movements are very typical when throwing mulch and moving heavy urns

or bags of dirt and fertilizer. Th ese are also the movements most likely to cause injury.

Most importantly, if you have pain call Th e Spinal Wellness Center as quickly as possible. An injury that sits around because

you “thought it would get better” is much more diffi cult to treat. We can comfortably and naturally get you feeling better and back

to your yard. If you are in the area, stop in for some pre-gardening spinal stretches! Compliments of Th e Spinal Wellness Center.

If your favorite dress is hanging in the closet because it’s out of date. Toshiko Marsh can make it Your Gown Again -the name of her recently established business at 1229 Central Ave. in Colonie. Marsh, who learned to sew in her native Japan more than 20 years ago, takes alterations to a new level when she transfonns vintage women’s clothing inlo elegant, updated gowns for weddings, ballroom dancing or other gala occasions. She also will create a one-of-a-kind gown from fabric provided by a customer. Her 900-square-foot space occupies the first floor of a 75-year-old brick building originally constructed as a rectory. The suite comprises finishing rooms and her sewing studio. Marsh offers clients “plenty of room to twirl around.” she says.A competitive ballroom dancer who excels at the waltz and the rumba, Marsh was inspired by her own experience to revive the antique dresses as contemporary chic. She also recalls being fascinated by fashion in her teenage years. when she learned topay close anention to the trends.Clearly, her niche as a specialty seamstress has gone unfilled in this area; Your Gown Again’s word-of-mouth clientele is already filling up nearly 50 hours of her week. Marsh is embracing thechallenge, and looking for women who appreciate her innovative flair with old fabrics. She loves best to work with Dupioni silk and chiffon.Marsh is new in her own business but not unknown; she has beenserving the Capital Region for a decade, formerly associated withhigh-end special-occasion dress stores. especially modifying bridal gowns. “I pick up cues from the customer, and can seewhat is working for her.” Marsh says of her success. “ I considermyself an artist.”’ (She also sketches portraits.)“This is meant to be,” Marsh says of her new-old space and the old-new dresses on her dressmaker’s forms. “ I never wanted towork in a box and I always wanted to visualize someone else’s ideas of what their clothing can look like and make it happen.”For more information or to schedule an appointment, call Toshiko Marsh at (518)669-7248Bridal consignments now being accepted

Steven J. Oshins, D.D.S.

Q. Dr. Oshins, what is the proper way to floss?

A. How to floss properly:

• Take 12-16 inches (30-40cm) of dental floss and wrap it around your middle

fingers, leaving about 2 inches (5cm) of floss between the hands.

• Using your thumbs and forefingers to guide the floss, gently insert the floss

between teeth using a sawing motion.

• Curve the floss into a “C” shape around each tooth and under the gumline.

Gently move the floss up and down, cleaning the side of each tooth.

Floss holders are recommended if you have difficulty using conventional floss.

Daily flossing will help you keep a healthy, beautiful smile for life!

lap, cheered on by family and friends. At sunset, candles in white luminary bags light the track in honor of those we have lost to this disease, and those still fighting. The event includes a DJ, games, activities and of course, food. Those who choose to

stay all night pitch tents around the track, and “camp out” to fight cancer, taking turns walking the track throughout the night, or sneaking a nap!

Relay for Life (RFL) was launched in 1985 by Dr. Gordy Klatt, a colorectal surgeon from Tacoma, Washington. Dr. Klatt combined his passion for running, and his desire to fight cancer into an event that has raised over $3 billion since its inception. And while most of us will walk the track instead of running, nearly 5,000 communities nationwide will host Relay for Life events this year.

Join us at Relay for Life on May 21st! For more information visit relayforlife.org/guilderlandny or call Jessica Giles at 454-4031.

The American Cancer Society is the largest non-governmental source of cancer research funds in the United States. In fact, the ACS currently has over $4 million in funding at work in capital region research grants. We also provide services and support to local cancer patients and their families. If you or someone you love has cancer, please call 1-800-227-2345.

Q A with Donna LussierBelle Images Skincare

Q. What year did your business start?I started my business in 1990 and am celebra ng my 21st year.

Q. Where are you located and were you always in the same loca on?I am at 2592 Western Ave. on the corner of Carmen Rd. & Rt. 20. I am in the rear of the large white building next to Joe’s Service Sta on. I have recently moved here but was located next to Hewi ’s Garden Center for 15 years. I also spent 3 years in Voorheesville and have also had my business at Albany Plas c Surgeons.

Q. How and why did you get into business?I had always wanted to be a dermatologist. The me and money required to invest in the profession, was not possible for me. I thought the next best thing was esthe cs. I am glad I chose this fi eld because it is extremely rewarding in regards to being able to relax and unwind clients while also giving them beau ful skin.

Q. Do you have many regular customers? Is there anything specifi c that they are always coming in for? I have a very loyal following. Many of whom have been coming to me for over 20 years. I have approximately 150 regular clients and many who come occasionally throughout the year. I am known for giving a relaxing, therapeu c facial in a very soothing, nurturing environment. However, many of my clients insist on my enzyme peel which li s away dull skin, allows makeup to glide on eff ortlessly and gives the skin a beau ful glow. I am also known for very precise expert brow shaping. In addi on, I understand the special needs and challenges women undergoing chemo and radia on are faced with in dealing with the harsh eff ects it has on the skin.

Q. What hours are you open?I am open Tues. & Thurs. 12:00 – 7:00 p.m. Fridays 11:00-4:00 and Saturdays 9:00-3:00

Q. What do you think is your biggest challenge in business? Probably keeping my price points close or the same as they have always been. The price of raw materials in products has really increased, as well as co on which I purchase in rolls. Even wax has gone up and of course, shipping. This all nega vely aff ects the profi t margin. Many of my clients drive a signifi cant distance to get to me which is already cos ng them money in gas. So I have learned to operate more effi ciently without sacrifi cing quality & consistency. I am constantly striving to keep it simple and not complicated

which the clients want and need.

Q. What do you want the community to know about you?Besides my profi ciency and knowledge in what I do, I believe that everyone knows someone, man or woman who needs to relax and is burned out. People are juggling too many balls and mul -tasking has become detrimental not necessarily benefi cial. My space is very quiet and soothing. I off er gi cer fi cates for any occasion or just…because. I work by appointment so I can spend the me required for a quality facial which takes approximately 50 minutes.

GOT FORECLOSURES?Guilderland, NY -Joe was frustrated. He had spent the last several years building his credit and saving to buy a home. He wanted to

buy a home but was reluctant to commit to one Realtor. He often searched national real estate sites looking for the perfect home.

When he found a home he liked, he would call the listing agent directly, not realizing the listing agent had a duty to the seller, not

him. He was frustrated because often he would call to fi nd the home he wanted had already sold. Once he called and found out the

home he liked had sold almost a year earlier. It suddenly dawned on him that the free sites he was using had many listings that were

already sold and outdated. Joe was so frustrated he even considered throwing in the towel on his dream to buy a home.

Then things took a dramatic change. A close friend told him he just “scored” a foreclosure that he was able to purchase below market

value. His friend told him he found the home on www.albanyhomefi nder.com a free site that let him search all homes listed with all

Realtors. The friend told Joe the site links directly to the local Realtor’s Multiple Listing Service and let him search for homes just

like a Realtor! The amazing thing is the site allowed Joe to search for foreclosures and emailed him automatically so he was the

fi rst to know when a new home hit the market. Joe was elated. He logged on to www.albanyhomefi nder.com and registered to

receive a free list of foreclosures. Within an hour, Joe even received a phone call from a customer service representative with www.

albanyhomefi nder.com that helped him fi ne tune his search and refi ne his parameters. Joe received daily email updates of new

homes and within a month had found the home of his dreams.

Joe called his friend to thank him for giving him the website information. In the course of their conversation Joe mentioned to his

friend that his mom was considering selling her home in Guilderland. His friend suggested she try www.Guilderlandmarkettrends.

com to fi nd out exactly what was going on with real estate values in her neighborhood before she called a Realtor. Joe thanked

his friend and decided to check out www.Guilderlandmarkettrends.com himself before he told his mom. He was amazed. The site

allowed him to enter his mom’s address and then gave him information on all of the recent listings and sales in the neighborhood

including days on market and photos. This helped Joe get a good idea of what his mom’s home was worth without speaking with

a Realtor. Before he knew it, Joe found himself calling his friend to thank him again for the valuable info.

www.guilderlandmarkettrends.com and www.albanyhomefi nder.com are both resources provided as a service free of charge by Clancy Real Estate.

Selling Your Home in 2011?Getting to the real estate closing table today is much more challenging than a few years ago. In 2010, only 52% of Guilderland homes listed actually sold.

In this kind of a real estate market you need a realtor with the experience and a proven track record on your side. With over 1900 homes sold and 25 years in the

business, Fraida Varah has sold more homes in Albany County than any other realtor.

Find out what homes are selling for in your neighborhood by going to

fraida.com and clicking “Market Snapshot” ...or call us at 438-9302
