Altrusa Luncheon Program: November 14 Dr. Elizabeth Bondy Univ. of Florida School of Teaching and Learning

Dr. Elizabeth (Buffy) Bondy spoke to Altrusans at the November 14 luncheon meeting about her work with Duval Elementary and Terwilliger Elementary. She highlighted the many ways she and UF worked with Terwilliger to strengthen social curriculum that enhances and supports the academic curriculum, implement trauma-informed teaching, increase the size of the behavior resource team, target support in kindergarten and first grade and focus on success in mathematics to elevate Terwilliger’s school grade.

In Altrusa tradition, Laura presented Dr. Bondy with a book, “The Energy Bus for Kids: A Story about Staying Positive and Overcoming Challenges” by Jon Gordon. The book will be donated to a local library in Dr. Bondy’s honor.

Altrusa Evening Program: November 19 Grace Howell Alachua Conservation Trust—Women in the Woods

Those of us who missed Grace Howell’s presentation at a luncheon meeting in September had a chance to see her at the November evening meeting. For those who did see her before, she changed up this presentation. Grace works for the Alachua Conservation Trust, a private non-profit organization whose mission is to protect the natural, historic, scenic and recreational resources in and around North Central Florida.

Continued on Page 6

Page 6: Outstanding Alachua County P M Volunteer Civic ... · Dr. Elizabeth (Buffy) Bondy spoke to Altrusans at the November 14 luncheon meeting about her work with Duval Elementary ... Dixie,

Ms. Howell explained that there are three major branches of focus for the Trust: conservation, acquisition, and restoration. Conservation includes things like managing preserves, maintaining trails, providing and maintaining infrastructure for public enjoyment of these areas. Acquisition involves buying

land to protect against development in order to preserve our wild spaces. One of the major restoration projects ACT is working on is longleaf pine ecosystems. Working with public and private sector partners, the Trust uses prescribed burns and a program to plant longleaf seedlings in order to preserve these vital habitats. Education is another component of ACT’s mission. They provide many events throughout the year to educate and involve the community in their mission to preserve not only the beauty, but the vital natural

resources of North Central Florida.

Interested and inquisitive Altrusans asked several great questions during Grace’s presentation. To learn more, you can check out their website, www.alachuaconservationtrust.org.

From Laura Gunter, President

I wanted to share what a great evening and presentation the Membership Committee held for their Membership Drive last evening. I am not quite sure the number of prospective members, but I would venture to say there were 10 plus. There was great information shared with them about Altrusa House, the bigger projects we do, and our fundraising efforts. They heard testimonials from three members on why they chose to join Altrusa and they were given the basics of being a member. Thank you to all who were there helping set up the beautiful tables, who brought food and beverages and who mixed and mingled with our guests.

On August 21, 1917, Altrusa incorporated in the state of Indiana as the “Altrusa Institute,” becoming the first national organization of business and professional women, either classified or unclassified. Norma Kirch and Lizzie Keller of Louisville, Kentucky; Morna Hickman Knipe of Kokomo, Indiana; and Mamie L. Bass of Indianapolis, Indiana signed the original Articles of Incorporation.

On August 22, 1917, Mamie L. Bass of Indianapolis, Indiana, was elected first national president.

On June 22–23, 1918, the Altrusa Institute held its first convention in Indianapolis. Forty members were present representing five clubs of Nashville, Tennessee; Louisville, Kentucky; Indianapolis, Indiana; Dayton, Ohio; and Chicago, Illinois. In addition to discussing the problems confronting women in business, the first Articles of Incorporation and Bylaws were adopted. Also adopted was the active, honorary, and associate membership, based on classification.

Vocational Committee:

The Vocational Committee held its annual Yard Sale Fundraiser at the home of Jill Rench on Saturday, November 19. Altrusans and ASTRAs showed up early in the morning to set up, hours before the opening of the sale.

The Vocational Committee is excited to announce that over $1,800 was raised from the Yard Sale. Items that remained at the end of the day were donated to Second Morning Star Missionary Baptist Church.

Vocational Committee Chair Bea Sherouse expresses her gratitude for all those who made the event a success. Special thank yous go to Becky Munden for her hard work in picking up so many donated items and for her tireless work on Saturday, Jill Rench for hosting the event at her house and providing coffee, breakfast treats and soup to nourish cold and tired Yard Sale workers, all the ASTRA members who turned out so very early on a cold morning to work so hard to support us, and all the Altrusans who donated their wonderful items for sale, helped publicize the event, and who came out to either work or shop on Saturday.
