The constructional approach to grammarThe constructional approach is an item-focused approach – a reversal of Early Chomskyan theory’s idea of totally general and purely formal structure, where lexicon was a lunatic asylum of irregularities.

The constructional format of description cuts across the distinction between lexical and grammatical expressions, focusing on how closely the two types of expressions are related:

- The ”constructicon” is a list of all conventional expressions, specifying lexical as well as grammatical properties.

The constructional approach to grammaticalizationThe constructional approach

- casts grammaticalization as a sub-process of the emergence of new constructions: - Lexicalization and grammaticalization share key features (cf.

Lehmann 2002, Brinton & Traugott 2005, Fischer 2007). - Constructions by definition accommodates shared features.

- emphasizes that the changes whereby constructions arise may have elements both of lexicalization and grammaticalization (cf. the let alone construction).

These are key points where the functional theory is fully compatible with the constructional approach.

The role of constructions in the functional theoryConstructions are the basic frame for grammaticalization.

- Both the standard and the non-standard type of grammaticalization onlyoccur within specific constructions – never ’across the board’: going to remains lexical with place complements, as in going to Rome

- Both the standard and the non-standard type of grammaticalization bring about new constructions.

- In order to capture the roles of the new grammatical elements, one has to view them within the context of the overall constructional change of which they form parts.

Limitations to the constructional approachThe constructional approach entails a risk of a too undifferentiated account:

- As pointed out by Traugott (2008: 34), the “holistic” focus may detract attention from the complexity of which the overarching construction in itself is only one part.

- The distinctions between lexical and grammatical, between non-grammaticalization changes and grammaticalization, and between different types of grammaticalization are neglected (Trousdale, p.c.).

In particular, a central point of the constructional approach is thatphonologically concrete linguistic expressions (’fillers’) as well as abstract linguistic expressions (consisting of slots only) are listed in the same ”constructicon”. This entails a risk of misunderstandings:

1. that phonologically concrete expressions and abstract expressions are entirely the same thing.

2. that there is no need to distinguish between grammatical and lexical elements on the one hand and relations between these elements on the other.

The functional theory- accepts that all linguistic expressions can be listed as retrievable,

conventional items (as in construction grammar).- emphasizes the distinction between:

(a) phonologically concrete linguistic expressions (‘fillers’): horse, but, isand abstract linguistic expressions

(b) elements and relations between elements (such as the head-modifier relation)

(c) lexical and grammatical expressions

These distinctions surface in

- the typology of linguistic signs

- the hypothesis of the phylogenesis of grammar

- the model of grammaticalization

The model of grammaticalization (again)In complex constructionalization, there may be sub-changes including (apart from lexicalization) two types of grammaticalization:

1. grammaticalization leading to new abstract grammatical expressionsand new semantic relations.

2. grammaticalization leading to phonologically concrete grammatical expressions.

Type 2 cannot occur without type 1, but type 1 can occur without type 2, as in the case of conventionalization of word order.

Example of co-occurrence of the two types of grammaticalization

[I say that.] [He is there.] Secondary pragmatic meaning relation between say

and he is there(mediated by pronominal reference)

> Grammaticalization: coding of secondary meaning relation

[I say [that he is there.]] Result of grammaticalization:Secondary semantic relation

The overall constructionalization in this case includes two interconnected features that are not captured by saying that grammaticalization "applies [...] to the construction as a whole" (Trousdale 2008: 54):

1. the rise of the subordination relation between clauses (a continuation of the basic phylogenetic trajectory of grammar, cf. the issue of recursion).

2. the rise of a new ancillary phonologically concrete element: the complementizer that as a signal of the relation of subordination between matrix and complement clause.

Summary- Constructions are the basic frame for grammaticalization.

- But grammaticalization can only be fully captured by sub-differentiating the overall process that applies to the construction as a whole.

- Only complex constructionalization qualifies as a frame for grammaticalization – the functional theory serves to characterize the relevant complexity.

Pragmaticalization and grammaticalization

What is ”pragmaticalization”?- Language change resulting in "discourse markers".

Views on the relation between pragmaticalization and grammaticalization:

1. Pragmaticalization is a type of grammaticalization(Traugott & Dasher 2002, Brinton & Traugott 2005, Diewald, fc).

1. Pragmaticalization is distinct from grammaticalization(Aijmer 1997, Ocampo 2006, Norde 2009)

According to the functional theory:

- Some discourse markers are grammatical, but others are not.

- Some of the changes that result in discourse markers involve grammaticalization, but others do not.

Page 14: Overview - academiasalensis.orgacademiasalensis.org/images/stories/2012/paskaitos... · 2. A functional theory of grammaticalization 3. Two types of grammaticalization 4. What qualifies

Grammatical(ized) discourse markers- Spanish de hecho- German modal particles: ja, doch, schon, denn, etc. (Diewald, fc.)

Grammatical(ized) discourse markers are:- by convention discursively secondary- dependent upon syntagmatically related expressions

Non-grammatical(ized) discourse markers- English well- Danish nuvel, jaså, aha, nå, næh

Non-grammaticalized discourse markers:- may be discursively secondary, but- are not dependent upon syntagmatically related expressions:

- They are holophrastic, and thus not structurally dependent upon syntagmatically related expressions, but discursively dependent in relation to utterances.

Pragmaticalization and grammaticalization

The functional theory motivates a synchronic distinction between1. categorematic (= lexical) expressions

- by convention potentially discursively primary in relation to syntagmatically related expressions

2. syncategorematic (= grammatical) expressions- by convention discursively secondary in relation to

syntagmatically related expressions3. acategorematic expressions (= holophrases)

- without syntagmatic relations- may be either by convention secondary or by convention

potentially primary in relation to other utterances.- As pointed out by Pawley & Syder (1983) much linguistic

communication consists of holophrastic chunks.

All three kinds of expressions may be (inter)subjective:1. English doggy2. German modal particles3. Holophrastic English well

Accordingly, the functional theory motivates a diachronic distinction between1. lexicalization: development of lexical expressions2. grammaticalization: development of grammatical expressions1. development of acategorematic expressions

- 1 and 2 tend towards greater structural-syntagmatic division of labour- 3 tends towards reduced structural-syntagmatic division of labour

- All three kinds of changes may accompany (inter)subjectification

- Type 3 changes might be referred to as "pragmaticalization”, or as acategorialization.

- If the term ”pragmaticalization” remains tied to the development of discourse particles, it will cover both grammaticalization and acategorialization.

Conclusion

Problem

There is no good definition of grammaticalization.

The distinction between grammaticalization and other types of language change remains pre-theoretical and intuition-based.

Solution to the problem: the functional theory of grammaticalization

Grammaticalization is a diachronic change which gives rise to expressions that are by convention discursively secondary.

Page 19: Overview - academiasalensis.orgacademiasalensis.org/images/stories/2012/paskaitos... · 2. A functional theory of grammaticalization 3. Two types of grammaticalization 4. What qualifies

Central features of the functional theory

The theory...

1. emphasizes the usage-based nature of grammaticalization: grammaticalization as the rise of new conventions.

2. emphasizes the structure-creating aspect of grammaticalization:grammaticalization creates new dependencies.

Conclusion

Advantages of the theory

The theory...

1. captures both standard (delexicalization) and non-standard (syntacticization) cases of grammaticalization.

2. emphasizes the structure-creating aspect of grammaticalization:grammaticalization creates new dependencies.

3. qualifies and provides a preliminary answer to the question of what qualifies a lexical expression for grammaticalization.

4. brings grammaticalization and typical grammaticalization features into a coherent and motivated relationship.

5. offers a way of talking about degree of grammatical status.6. offers a place for degrammaticalization into lexical expressions, but

simultaneously predicts that this development is much more rare than the opposite development.

Conclusion
