NASA’s One Stop Shopping Initiative (OSSI) is an innovative, mission-enabling, NASA-wide approach to: • Support strategic NASA and US
workforce needs in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM),
• Provide students seeking NASA research and education opportunities with a “one stop shopping” experience,
• Collaboratively work to build awareness of NASA opportunities, and
• Continually reengage students throughout their academic careers.

The Strategic Model below depicts OSSI’s approach to building a STEM workforce pipeline. Through national branding and recruiting efforts, students are made aware of NASA internship, fellowship, and scholarship opportunities. Broker Facilitators recruit at four diverse institution types, with a focus on undergraduate and graduate students in STEM disciplines. In addition, the Office of Education Performance Measurement (OEPM) system will use information from OSSI for longitudinal studies.

NASA mentors work with Center Education Offices to post opportunities and select students. The selected interns and fellows are an integral part of building NASA’s STEM workforce pipeline. NASA’s Offices of Human Capital Management can include these students in future recruitment efforts for positions upon graduation. In addition, the Office of Education Performance Measurement (OEPM) system will use information from OSSI for longitudinal studies.

One of the key components of the One Stop Shopping Initiative is the OSSI, which enables students to access all opportunities through a single portal. Likewise, mentors across all NASA Centers can see all students’ applications. Access OSSI from the OEID LaunchPad at https://intern.nasa.gov

On an annual basis over 1,000 NASA funded opportunities (e.g., scholarships, internship, fellowships) are made available to students seeking hands-on STEM research, aerospace education and space exploration experience to complement their academic pursuits.

OSSI provides a Universe of NASA Internship, Fellowship and Scholarship Opportunities for Eligible Students
Internship Opportunities: Provide undergraduate and graduate students with the chance to participate in either research or other experiential learning, under the guidance of a mentor at a NASA installation, and/or the opportunity to attend a college or university with a level of financial support. Scholarship opportunities may also be available.

NASA Education is the creator and leader of the NASA One Stop Shopping Initiative, setting the direction, policy, goals and objectives for the Initiative, and offering guidance to the OSSI Business Manager, Broker-Facilitator Corps and System Administrator. NASA Human Capital Management supports and enables NASA’s mission by identifying, acquiring, aligning and sustaining the workforce needed to meet employment requirements. NASA Diversity and Equal Opportunity supports success by partnering with key offices across the Agency and external stakeholders to achieve an environment within NASA that honors excellence, teamwork, integrity, fairness and equity. NASA strives to exemplify in all of its decision making the principles of diversity and inclusion, including that employees have the freedom to compete on a fair and level playing field. NASA Communications supports the Agency’s strategic objectives by disseminating information on NASA’s mission and activities to inspire, educate and engage the public.

The OSSI Business Manager is responsible for developing overall marketing, awareness, information-sharing and outreach strategies for the OSSI, the integration of the efforts of other OSSI partner organizations, and ensuring the OSSI achieves its objectives. The Business Manager also supports important features of the OSSI system. The Ohio Aerospace Institute (OAI) serves as the OSSI Business Manager. The OSSI System Administrator is responsible for the sustaining engineering and maintenance of the OSSI system. OSSI Broker-Facilitators pursue active, nationwide outreach and awareness building opportunities to engage students, faculty, career development/placement officers and leadership at all types of institutions of higher education (IHE). Broker-Facilitators implement recruitment, retention and career development strategies, are resources for information and provide assistance for students at these institution types, which include: Hispanic Serving Institutions; Predominantly Black Institutions (including Historically Black Colleges and Universities); Predominantly White Institutions; and Tribal Colleges and Universities. Each IHE type has a specific Broker-Facilitator assigned to it. Students, faculty and administrators at these institution types are encouraged to contact their Broker-Facilitator for more information about the OSSI.

further reference • Complete one internship, fellowship or scholarship
application to be viewable by all NASA mentors • Complete scholarship supplement based on interest • Request assistance in completing application, if
