Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 (WSS) It is a set of add-on services for the Microsoft Windows Server Platform.

WSS includes resources necessary to build information management and collaboration solutions.

WSS provides: o Storage

Store content as documents, Web pages and other types of documents in a common data repository with full data management capabilities, version control, metadata and site- level search.

o Security Comprehensive security management by employing a range of

authentication providers, policy management, group management and permission levels ranging from individual items in a list to entire sites.

o Site Model Providing a template-based infrastructure for deployment of

Providing comprehensive API’s that allows custom applications to be built on WSS, employing use of XML web services and SOAP and providing methods for migrating content into WSS sites.

SharePoint Terminology

Workspace An organized collection of documents, content sources, management

folders, categories, document profiles, subscriptions, and discussions. It provides a central location to organize, manage, and publish content.

Document Library The storage location for documents in the workspace.

Lists A list is a collection of information that is shared with team members.

Web Parts A customizable, reusable component used to display specific

information on a dashboard. They are “building blocks” of WSS. Really Simple Syndication (RSS)

It is a Web feed format used to publish frequently updated works in a standardized format.

Records Management Records center supports the entire records management process, from

records collection through records management to records disposition.

o Policy and Auditing Policy-based document retention and expiration schedules. Auditing and Reporting. Barcodes

o Record collection programmable interface Content can be submitted to the Records Center through a

web service by using the SOAP protocol or through e-mail by using SMTP protocol.

o Record routing The record center includes a record routing list that

automatically routes incoming records to their proper location based on their record type.

o Hold When records are placed on hold, they are suspended from

any expiration policies that may be in effect and they are thus protected from destruction.
