Queen Charlotte College Meet BluBy Sandi Lock

On Monday, Lynda and Sandi were working away in the main oce at Queen Charlotte College when in walked Ms Beddis carrying a rather soggy cardboard box. Inside the box was a darling wee blue penguin which had been rescued from being stuck in the QCC cricket nets by Ms Beddis and Ms Moller. Word travelled fast, and throughout interval there was a constant stream of sta coming to view our ‘new entrant’ and Blu was aptly named by Ms Somers.

Blu kept Lynda and Sandi company for an hour or so before being handed over to Rae from the Department of Conservation. Blu will be returned to his natural habitat and will shortly be eating crabs and small sh. It was lovely to meet you, Blu.

Picton Smart and ConnectedOn your bike PictonBy Chrissy Powlesland

On Saturday afternoon the Picton Smart & Connected Bike Walk Working Group celebrated the completion of the Marina to Marina walkway between Picton and Waikawa Bay. Marlborough District Councillor David Oddie was there, having walked the path into town earlier in the day. “This walkway will be celebrated by the tourist industry as it will attract more tourists and cruise ship passengers particularly with the new signage. But, like everyone here, I use it regularly and it is our community that will gain the most benet from it.” He said.

Jill Evans, Working Group Chair, spoke of the initiative which was conceived after a public meeting four years ago where the community indicated strong support for improved bike and walking tracks around the town. Jill has worked closely with Marlborough District Council and local earthmoving business Crafar Crouch to complete the improvements to the 3.5 km track. “Being on the ground in Picton has its advantages; I was on their case keeping this project top of mind!”

Crafar Crouch was able to reduce their overall cost by tting the work in around other jobs

“They are the real stars here by working with the community and Council to achieve this project on reasonable budget”, she said.

To celebrate the opening, Jill cut the ribbon, then headed o on the track on an e-bike, followed by other volunteers including John Pickering, Carolyn Pickering, Annie Jones, David Brown, Kathy Brown and Braden Prideaux.

The Picton Smart & Connected Bike Walk Working Group has its sights set on their next big project; navigating a safe cycling route from Picton to Blenheim. A timely goal after Friday’s announcement by Christchurch Mayor Lianne Dalziel (along with Hurunui, Kaikoura and Marlborough Councils), oering unilateral support for a cycleway linking Christchurch and Picton.

We have a collection box set up in the Property Management Office

for food donations for The Salvation Army.

Picton waynding signs given the go ahead

Picton is a step closer to the installation of a series of signs that provide information about the town to visitors and locals.

Council’s Assets and Services Committee agreed to fund the $100,000 project, subject to the full Council’s approval early in December.

Sounds Councillor Trevor Hook said the project involves the production and installation of ve large vertical, double-sided waynding panels, and thirteen smaller signs.

“The signs provide useful information for visitors to Picton, particularly cruise ship passengers, cyclists and pedestrians. They support civic pride and promote the area, and complement the wider Top of the South waynding approach used in Nelson and Blenheim,” Clr Hook said.

The project, funded through the Forestry and Land Development Account, has been in the pipeline for some time. The waynding signage will refresh existing visitor information and also help support and coordinate key aspects of the Picton/Waitohi area including transport and visitor points of interest, the Foreshore Reserve, London Quay and High Street.

Council sta have worked with key stakeholders and the local community, including Te Ātiawa o Te Waka a Maui, the Link Pathway Trust, Picton Business Group and Picton Smart and Connected to ensure the waynding signs feature the right information in the right places.

Work to produce the signs will now begin and it is expected that they will be ready to be installed in the next few months.

Picton Library and Service Centre celebrates visitor growth

The new Picton Library and Service Centre Waitohi Whare Mātauranga opened its doors for the rst time one year ago. Twelve months on, the library is proving popular with booklovers, community groups and local schools. District Libraries Manager Glenn Webster said there has been a big increase in visitors and book loans, compared to the year before.

“Visitor numbers have increased by 61 per cent and loans are up 11 per cent, which is a fantastic result and shows that the service is being well used,” Glenn said.

Mayor John Leggett said after only one year of operation the new Picton Library and Service Centre Waitohi Whare Mātauranga is already a runaway success.

Page 7: P1 5th December 2018 - Picton Resource Centre · To celebrate the opening, Jill cut the ribbon, then headed o˚ on the track on an e-bike, followed by other ... Normal hours resume

“The dramatic growth in visitor numbers is an outstanding achievement.”

“Hats o to the library sta for their deserved success and to the many community organisations who are using the facilities, partnering with Council and providing a wide variety of programmes and activities.”

From January to October 2018 there have been 514 bookings for use of the activities space and meeting rooms. Of those, 362 were booked by community groups including Community Te Reo, Picton Knitters and Spinners, Picton Flower Ladies and Picton Poets. Library programmes including Super Seniors, National Bee Month and Arthritis Awareness accounted for 129 of the bookings, while afterhours bookings totalled 23.

Local schools have provided physical and digital displays, and the library and service centre has partnered with many local organisations, including Plunket, Picton Smart and Connected, Marlborough Book Festival and REAP Marlborough, to help to extend their programmes.

Glenn Webster said Picton Library and Service Centre Waitohi Whare Mātauranga continues to be the ‘friendly face of technology’, providing assistance and access to the digital world.

“After the success of year one, we’re looking forward to 2019 and all it has in store for us,” Glenn said.

Emergency heads-up for visitors

We are great hosts here in Marlborough. With the summer season upon us, it’s important that accommodation and hospitality providers think about being prepared for an emergency. Visitors may not be aware of the hazards that we face. In other countries, hazards and emergency management can be very dierent.

Planning for an emergency helps keep you and your sta safe, and it informs your guests about the hazards they could face while they’re here.

Think about: - Drop, cover and hold information about earthquakes - Tsunami information, particularly for people providing accommodation in the Sounds - A business continuity plan - Make your own emergency plan. If you’re prepared for an emergency, you’ll be better able to help your guests and sta. - Encourage your sta to think about their emergency plan.

For further information visit Civil Defence Emergency Management or contact Catherine Coates at Marlborough Civil Defence Emergency Management Group, [email protected].

The Picton Resource Centre will be closed from Monday 17th December 2018 to Friday 18th January 2019

If you wish to place an advert on the noticeboard by Fresh Choice during the holidays then please post your notice with payment in the mailbox at the Picton Resource Centre (side of counter) which will be regularly attended to.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone in our community who has supported the centre this year, be it through contributing to the Picton Happenings, donating, attending a course or helping with those all import volunteer hours.

The Picton Resource Centre looks forward to continuing our service to the community in 2019 and we hope you all have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
