DISTRICT 14 L LIONS NEWS Message from District Governor Bill Higgins June 2013 Lion Amy Higgins, Editor [email protected] District Governor Bill Higgins & family visited the Three Spring Lions Carnival, where Sara, Caroline, & Billy each “won” a stuffed lion at the Stone Creek Valley Lions Fish Bowl Game truck. It is hard to believe, but my year as District Governor is quickly coming to a close. I am extremely proud of the Lions of 14L who have made this year an overwhelming success. As you know, my primary goal this year has been to increase our membership. We have far exceeded expectations. We have welcomed 105 new Lions into our District, and although we have lost 73 members, our membership stands at +32 for the year and we will be ending the year with a net gain in membership for the first time in over 15 years. Thank you all for making that happen! Amy and I had a fantastic time at the Multiple District 14 State Convention in Valley Forge. We were honored to be in attendance as International President Wayne Madden recognized PDG Larry Edwards with the Presidential Award – the second highest recognition in Lionism. Larry has been an invaluable resource to me during my term as District Governor, and has been incredibly supportive of my agenda. He is someone I can call on anytime for advice and guidance, and I am proud to call him a friend. And although both unable to attend the State Convention, Gene Miller and Denny Hall were recognized by President Madden with Leadership Awards. Serving as your District Governor has been an incredible honor, and one that Amy and I will cherish forever. Thank you for giving me that opportunity to serve, and for working with me to serve our communities. I will be working closely with District Governor Gerald Chapman, as we continue to grow our membership. I look forward to reporting back to you next month on our adventures in Hamburg, Germany. In the meantime, remember our Motto: WE SERVE! - District Governor Bill Higgins District Governor Bill Higgins & family with International President Wayne Madden at the PA Lions State Convention

Message from District Governor Bill Higgins

June 2013

Lion Amy Higgins, Editor [email protected]

District Governor Bill Higgins & family visited the Three Spring Lions Carnival, where Sara, Caroline, & Billy each “won” a stuffed lion at the Stone Creek Valley Lions Fish Bowl Game truck.

It is hard to believe, but my year as District Governor is quickly coming to a close. I am extremely proud of the Lions of 14L who have made this year an overwhelming success. As you know, my primary goal this year has been to increase our membership. We have far exceeded expectations. Serving as your District Governor has been an incredible honor, and one that Amy and I will cherish forever. Thank you for giving me that opportunity to serve, and for working with me to serve our communities. I will be working closely with District Governor Gerald Chapman, as we

10 Simple Service Ideas

ENVIRONMENT Message from 1st VDG Gerald…

• Recycle items such as phones, computers, and printer cartridges • Clean up a local body of water • Host an environmental seminar in your community • Clean up a vacant lot or parking lot in your community • Host a beach clean-up • Create compost in your own backyard by mixing food scraps and leaves with the soil and letting them decompose • Recycle plastic shopping bags • Raise awareness about harmful substances in homes and the community • Organize a project to protect endangered animals or plants • Organize a nature walk

Dear Lions, Lioness, and Leo: I want to thank you the Lions of 14-L for your support in electing me as your 1st Vice District Governor. I would like to thank DG Bill for his work in bringing our membership up. We need to continue to see growth in order to have a strong district. As we get ready for a new year under the leadership of District Governor Elect Gerald we need to work with him to continue that strength in our district. Looking ahead to the USA/Canadian Forum in Kansas, I think of the Wizard of Oz. The Scare Crow wanted a brain, the Tin Man wanted a heart, The Lion needed courage, and the same courage we need in a lion to come forward to be the next 2nd Vice District Governor. We have knowledgeable people who have the heart, but you need the courage to take that step. As we assume our new duties and responsibilities let us give our clubs and district our full support for the coming year. Our objective is to BUILD A BETTER WORLD through our motto WE SERVE. Yours in Lionism, Anna Clark

Fellow Lions, Lioness, and Leos, PU 101’s are crucial to getting information out to the clubs from LCI, PA Lions, and the District. Email addresses are appreciated. If you have trouble with a PU 101, send the officer information to me in any form available to you: letter, email, or handwritten listing. Lions motivation is something I hope to promote this year. Familiarization with the Lions related research and projects will help. Helping or attending the District 14L Popeye Fleck Fishing Derby on July 13, and the PA Lions Appreciation Day on July 21at PA Lions Beacon Lodge Camp is very motivational - be there as spectator or participant. As with any District Governor, your support and participation are appreciated. If you have ideas for improving our district, please share them. Some things have to be developed and may not be feasible in one year, but working together over time we can accomplish much per Helen Keller. Lion Sue and I will be off to Hamburg Germany for the Lions International Convention on June 30. We had a choice to fill a leadership need or take an easier path. The Lions, Lioness, and Leos of District 14L have a choice: (1) step forward to fill positions and service needs, or (2) be a Lion in name only. May the Roar be with you! Enthusiasm is contagious, spread the condition. We are doing something different with the pre-cabinet and banner exchange. This will combine two events and get you back home early. See the notice in the newsletter and join in the planning and festivities. Yours in Lionism DGE Gerald Chapman

New Tools for Inviting Members and Keeping Them Satisfied Growing your Lions club is important because of the

difference each new member can make in your community.

Along with welcoming new members, it is also important to

make sure new and current members are engaged and

satisfied. To help your club, check out the new Just Ask! New

Member Recruiting Guide and Membership Satisfaction

Guide from Lions Clubs International. The Just Ask! Guide

will walk your club through the process of inviting members,

and the Membership Satisfaction Guide will help ensure your

club members are getting the experience they expect from

The Reading Action Program Makes a Lasting Impact For the past year, Lions have addressed the global illiteracy

issue by promoting early reading and improved access to

education in their communities. With over 2 million volunteer

hours and 6 million people served as part of the Reading

Action Program in 2012-13, the Lions Clubs International

Board of Directors is extending the campaign for a minimum

of 10 years. That means Lions can continue focusing

projects on literacy and education, as well as collaborating

with partners to expand resources and volunteer

opportunities that help children and adults everywhere build

brighter futures. Read the Lions Blog to see how Lions have

participated in the Reading Action Program.

Servant Leader Course Launch We serve! But Lions must also constantly strive to be good

leaders and problem solvers. The Lions Learning

Center provides online courses that allow Lions to develop

skills in categories including Leadership, Managing Others,

Achieving Results and Communication. The newest course,

Servant Leadership, takes you on a journey along the Servant

Leadership highway, through real-life scenarios and activities

that help you develop new skills while discovering and

reflecting on your own leadership strengths. Do you think you

are a servant leader? Lions online courses typically take 60

minutes to complete. For more information, read the Lions

Learning Center FAQs.

Dear Lion Leader,

As General Chairperson of the 2013 USA/Canada Lions Leadership Forum, I want to personally invite you to this great learning event. Overland Park, Kansas will be the site for this fall's top North American Lions educational experience. September 19-21, Lions from all across the United States and Canada will converge on the "Land of Oz" to sharpen their leadership skills, renew old friendships and make new friends. As a leader in your area, this would be a great opportunity to learn more from accomplished presenters and visit with our International leaders.

In addition, four featured main speakers will grab your attention with their dynamic and motivational topics during each of the four meals. I promise you will not only learn something new, but you will also be moved, entertained, motivated, and will experience a renewed sense of pride in being a Lion!

You are encouraged to visit our website at www.usacanadalionsforum.org and check out the January Newsletter which is loaded with information on the speakers, seminars and hotels, along with articles on the Kansas area.
